2022 PGA Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 PGA Championship, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

The second major of 2022 is here, and it’s sure to be a good one in Tulsa. The world’s biggest stars in golf will be competing for the Wanamaker Trophy at Southern Hills, the first time the course is hosting a PGA Championship since 2007 when Tiger Woods edged Woody Austin by 2 strokes to win it. Below, we look at the 2022 PGA Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler comes into this week as the betting favorite (+1000) to win his second major, but he’s followed closely behind by Jon Rahm and a host of others, including Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth. Scheffler is currently the No. 1 player in the world with Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Smith and Patrick Cantlay rounding out the top 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Southern Hills will play as a par 70 this week, totaling 7,556 yards. There are only 2 par 5s on the course, which is why it’s a par 70, but it’s a treacherous track that will play more than 300 yards longer than in the 2007 PGA Championship. The course has changed noticeably since the last time it hosted this major, undergoing a redesign in 2018 when trees were removed and bunkers were added.

Jordan Spieth (+2000)

Would Spieth’s odds have been shorter if he won the AT&T Byron Nelson on Sunday? Maybe slightly. But even though he came up short, I love his chances this week at Southern Hills. He’s finished 1st and 2nd in his last 2 starts and now has 3 top-10s this season.

His swing changes seem to be working because he’s 12th on tour in strokes gained: tee to green. It’s surprisingly been his putting that has lagged behind, ranking 175th in that department.

Will Zalatoris (+3000)

It was stunning to see Zalatoris miss the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson, but I’m backing him again this week on a course that will require good ball-striking and the ability to grind out pars and avoid bogeys. In his previous 3 starts prior to last week, he didn’t finish worse than T-6.

As always, it comes down to his putting.

2022 PGA Championship picks – Contender

Max Homa (+6000)

Homa is very underrated. He makes cuts, he contends on Sundays and his only real weakness is chipping around the greens (137th in strokes gained). He won his last start at the Wells Fargo Championship and his season-opening start at the Fortinet Championship and has put together the best year of his career. Now he comes to Southern Hills where pars and steady play will be essential. He has the game to win this week.

Tiger Woods (+7000)

On the leaderboard, it didn’t look like Woods contended at the Masters. He finished 47th, but that was only after shooting 78 on Saturday and Sunday. Realistically, fatigue and his injured leg likely got the best of him as the weekend wore on.

But this week at Southern Hills, with a much flatter golf course compared to Augusta National, Woods’ body shouldn’t hold him back as much. He’s won here before too, claiming the 2007 PGA Championship. I like his chances a lot in Tulsa.

2022 PGA Championship picks – Long shot

Stewart Cink (+30000)

If you think the 48-year-old Cink is too far beyond his prime to contend on tour, you might want to think again. He tied for 9th at the Wells Fargo Championship 2 weeks ago, about a month after tying for 7th at the Valspar. He tied for 30th at the PGA Championship last year and was T-4 in his most recent appearance prior to that (2018), so he still has the game to compete on the biggest stage. Obviously, at +30000, it’ll take a lot for him to win, but he’s worth a small wager.
