What Oklahoma’s scholarship situation looks like heading into 2021 spring, ahead to 2022 season

Oklahoma, despite how it has been seen, is sitting in a very good situation for the 2021 season and for the future in terms of its roster.

Oklahoma, despite how it has been perceived, is sitting in a very good situation for the 2021 season and for the future in terms of roster management.

The Sooners do have some positions where things are a bit thin, but with the way they have been recruiting and the room they have created for the 2022 recruiting class, Oklahoma’s numbers look great. Lincoln Riley now has the flexibility to once again go for the big fish in the 2022 recruiting class in droves and be able to fall back on the transfer portal.

Riley and the Sooners sit as of this post at 89 scholarships for the 2021 season, which is well below where they could be. At least 20 scholarships low on what it could be.

When you look at the roster, Oklahoma has a chance to completely turn it over from 2021 to 2022. The Sooners have more than 10 NFL prospects and more other players who are starting to get buried a bit on the depth chart. It could be a serious overhaul after this season, but for 2021, Oklahoma is loaded.

What this provides is a chance for Riley to be ultra-aggressive on the recruiting trail for 2022. Oklahoma can take a huge class if it wants, and one that is deep with top blue-chip talent. If the Sooners strike out, though, Oklahoma is more than willing to take on the best transfers in the portal.

Here is what the Sooners’ scholarship situation looks like as of this post being written, though Sooners Wire does expect this to change a little in the near future. We are treating the extra year of eligibility in this instance as if players will just keep the same eligibility title from the 2020 season. This will be changed if not:

As you can see: the numbers are thin at quarterback, running back and potentially linebacker for the 2022 season. And, as you can see, Oklahoma has four commitments for the 2022 recruiting class and with massive expected attrition, the Sooners are in a good spot at 84 scholarships so far.

Here is what it looks like in an expanded sense with how many years players have played and how many years players have left.

Former Browns head coach Mike Pettine is out as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator

The Packers are not renewing Pettine’s contract

Former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine will not be back with the Green Bay Packers as that team’s defensive coordinator in 2021. The Packers made it official by announcing that Pettine will not get another contract to run the Green Bay defense.

Pettine has been in charge of the Packers defense for the last three seasons. While they did finish 9th in yardage and 13th in points allowed in 2020, Pettine’s scheme was widely panned by critics. His unit’s poor performance in the postseason was the apparent last straw for head coach Matt Lafleur and the Packers brass.

Pettine was the head coach for the Browns in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, finishing with a record of 10-22. They are the only two seasons he has been an NFL head coach.

Game-by-game predictions for Georgia’s 2021 schedule

Game-by-game predictions for Georgia’s 2021 schedule

Folks, the dreaded offseason has finally arrived. Unfortunately, we will have to deal without having football on the TV until the Fall.

With that being said, why not get the excitement flowing early?

Here’s our best guess at a way-too-early predictions list for Georgia’s newly released 2021 schedule. Of course, this will change following spring practice and summer workouts.

  • Sept. 4: Clemson, Charlotte, Nc: W, 35-28
  • Sept. 11: UAB, Athens, Ga: W, 45-13
  • Sept 18: South Carolina, Athens, Ga: W, 48-10
  • Sept. 25: at Vanderbilt, Nashville, Tn: W, 55-7
  • Oct. 2: Arkansas, Athens, Ga: W, 35-21
  • Oct. 9: at Auburn, Auburn, Ala: W: 34-14
  • Oct. 16: Kentucky, Athens, Ga: W, 31-10
  • Oct. 23: Off: (Bye Week)
  • Oct. 30: Florida, Jacksonville, Fla: W, 45-35
  • Nov. 6: Missouri, Athens, Ga: W, 48-21
  • Nov. 13: At Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn: W, 45-10
  • Nov. 20: Charleston Southern, Athens, Ga: W, 59-6
  • Nov. 27: at Georgia Tech, Atlanta, Ga: W, 55-20
  • Dec. 4: SEC Championship (Alabama), Atlanta, Ga: L, 35-34
  • Make CFP as 3-seed

After a close loss to Alabama, the Dawgs make the playoff at 12-1. Georgia then enters the playoff to likely face No. 2 Oklahoma in a rematch of the 2018 Rose Bowl Game.

Alabama (1) and Clemson (4) round out the Top 4.

Then, the Dawgs get a rematch with Alabama in the national championship and fall justtttt short …

An incredible 2021 season ends just short of glory because that’s what happens to Georgia sports teams … (But seriously, we can’t pick Georgia to beat Alabama until it actually happens)

Xander Schauffele says Patrick Reed is ‘protected by the (PGA) Tour’ after latest rules situation

Xander Schauffele said Patrick Reed is “protected by the (PGA) Tour” after his latest rules situation at the Farmers Insurance Open.

A lot of times fans will get frustrated with athletes for giving the same old, same old answers in interviews or press conferences after competition.

That wasn’t the case with Xander Schauffele after Sunday’s final round of the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The talk of the weekend at the PGA Tour’s annual stop in San Diego surrounded Patrick Reed (and later Rory McIlroy) and a situation with an embedded ball during Saturday’s round.

“I mean, he did everything by the book according to the official and everyone stood by there,” said Schauffele, who didn’t search for video of Reed’s situation but heard players talking about it. “Obviously the talk amongst the boys isn’t great, I guess, but he’s protected by the (PGA) Tour and that’s all that matters, I guess.”

When asked if he’d ever ran into a similar situation on the course, Schauffele’s response was direct and to the point: “I would not put myself and create a situation like that.

“If my ball’s embedded, I usually will wait and call someone and kind of wait until everyone’s on the same page, wait to look at video,” he continued. “So I try to avoid situations like that just for that reason.”

The San Diego native finished in a five-way tie for second at 9 under, five strokes behind Reed.

Lanto Griffin, who finished T-7 alongside Jon Rahm and Will Zalatoris, was also asked about Reed’s embedded ball situation, saying “it’s tough to see, it’s sad, kind of pisses us off, but it’s the way it is. Hopefully something changes and come to a conclusion.”

247Sports names KJ Britt as one of the MVPs of Senior Bowl

Former Auburn linebacker made a huge impression at the 2021 Senior Bowl and earned a MVP nod by 247Sports.

KJ Britt definitely made a great impression during his time in Mobile for the 2021 Senior Bowl.

On Saturday, it was announced that his fellow teammates had named him the best linebacker at the annual game and then, on Sunday, 247Sports named the former Auburn star as one of the MVPs of the game.

From the article:

Britt missed most of last season with a thumb injury, but showed no ill effects in Mobile.

“I like him a lot,” NFL.com analyst Chase Goodbread said. “He’s a leader, he’s an alpha on that Auburn defense. … I think the NFL, with him, they look at a guy who’s great downhill, who’s better downhill than maybe moving laterally, which is of course in high demand at the linebacker position in the NFL. So that’s an issue for him certainly, but Britt’s a guy, from a football character standpoint, they love him.”

As a junior in 2019, Britt recorded 69 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks while also forcing one fumble.
