After trading back with the Green Bay Packers from the No. 85 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans were back on the clock at No. 92 overall and selected inside linebacker Monty Rice out of Georgia.
This is the third foray the Titans have made into University of Georgia products in the last three drafts (D’Andre Walker in 2019, Isaiah Wilson in 2020). Let’s hope this one works out better than the last two.
Rice, who is a bit undersized at 6-foot and 230 pounds, has displayed decent coverage skills during his time in college and figures to be an impact pass rusher up the middle at the next level. He also plays with great speed and thrives as a tackler.
However, not everyone has such a positive opinion of him, as The Draft Network’s Drae Harris projects him to be a backup inside linebacker and special teams contributor. The Titans will hope he is much more than that.
With the pick of Monty, one would have to assume that 2018 first-round pick, Rashaan Evans, doesn’t have much of a future in Nashville.
We already expected the Titans to decline his fifth-year option, but now we have to wonder if Tennessee will consider trading him with Rice, Jayon Brown and David Long also on the roster.
The Titans have one more pick on Day 2 at No. 100 overall, and now thanks to the trade with the Packers that netted them an extra fourth-round pick, Tennessee will have six selections on Day 3.
