Michigan already got one preferred walk-on this week, but flying somewhat under the radar, it picked up another over the weekend at the most important position on the field.

Peyton Smith is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound two-star quarterback from Traverse City (MI) Central, with offers from Davenport and Northwood, according to 247Sports. But, despite those offers and the distance from Northern Michigan to Ann Arbor, Smith wanted to try his hand at Power Five college football. So when Michigan came calling with a preferred walk-on offer, he leapt at the opportunity.

On Saturday, he made his decision official, pledging to the Wolverines via Twitter.

Smith spoke to MLive about his decision to play at Michigan, saying that it was something of a no-brainer, especially after meeting head coach Jim Harbaugh.

“I had a lot of Division II offers, but basically I decided to go where I would love to go to school, where I felt most comfortable,” Smith said. “I met with Coach (Jim) Harbaugh, and he said I was Jim Harbaugh Jr. because we have so much in common.

“We were just having a normal conversation about where we grew up and stuff, and it seemed like for every subject, we had something in common. We play the same position in baseball (pitcher and shortstop), we had the same tooth knocked out … everything was the same. It was funny, but having that familiarity definitely helped.”
