The Pittsburgh Steelers are fully engulfed in preparation for free agency and the 2020 NFL draft. The next step in the draft process if the NFL Scouting Combine. NFL.com offered up one prospect for every NFL team to watch during the combine and for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they went for former Penn State wide receiver K.J. Hamler.
Here’s what they had to say about Hamler:
The Steelers need a speed receiver to alleviate some of the attention on JuJu Smith-Schuster. Hamler is the guy, as a dynamic speedster who could excel in the slot. He’s expected to register a sub-4.4 40-yard dash in Indy, which could boost his stock.
As of now the Steelers have JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson and Washington as their top three receivers. I’m not sure where Hamlerfits in the depth chart but this isn’t the toughest sell for me.
Most pundits view Hamler as a late first, early second-round pick. If he really runs a sub 4.4 forty this would certainly cement that status. With the Steelers minus a first-round pick, this doesn’t seem very realistic.
The Steelers are going to have some big holes to fill on defense that will require attention in the second round. If the Steelers want to add speed at wide receiver it’s going to have to come later in the draft.
