The draft so far
After a quiet Round 1, the Colts made plenty of noise in Rounds 2 and 3. They took WR Michael Pittman Jr. at No. 34 and then traded up three spots to No. 41 to grab RB Jonathan Taylor in a mildly shocking move. Giving up their fifth-rounder to do that, the Colts moved back from their original spot at No. 75 in a trade with the Lions.
The Colts ended Day 2 by taking Utah S Julian Blackmon at the No. 85 pick, addressing a big need. Chris Ballard was aggressive, but the focus of the day was adding explosive talent to the roster and they did just that.
The Colts addressed their biggest need at wide receiver but now face some challenges as they look for value in the final four rounds.
Coming up for Day 3
After making those moves in the second and third rounds, the Colts will have four picks slated to go on Day 3. That could change if Ballard gets the itch to trade again, continuing the narrative that he loves to move around the board. It isn’t clear how they feel about their picks at the moment, but a change is always possible.
Here’s the slate of picks set for the Colts on Day 3:
- Round 4 | No. 122
- Round 5 | No. 149 (from DET)
- Round 6 | No. 189 (from DET)
- Round 6 | No. 193
If the Colts finish with seven selections, it will be the fewest number of picks Ballard has used in a draft since taking over as the general manager in 2017.
Potential positions addressed
After adding a wide receiver, running back and safety, the focus of the final day is likely more depth at positions of need. The Colts could look at a quarterback like James Morgan, Jacob Eason or Anthony Gordon. They could also target a tight end and an edge rusher while there is also some value left at cornerback.
There are several ways the Colts could go about making their picks on Day 3 and while they did a nice job with the talent addition on Day 2, this day will be crucial for depth and development.
