2020 NFL Draft: Quarterback rankings from Draft Wire

What are the early rankings for the QB position?

One of the biggest questions this offseason surrounding the Indianapolis Colts will be if they will pull the trigger on a young quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft.

While the vast majority of the fanbase expects and hopes general manager Chris Ballard will bring in a potential future piece at the position, there is always the chance he sticks with Jacoby Brissett and decides to build around him.

Regardless, rankings at each position will come out over the next few months. From our friends over at Draft Wire, here is how their initial rankings look at the quarterback position:

  1. Joe Burrow, LSU
  2. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama
  3. Justin Herbert, Oregon
  4. Jordan Love, Utah State
  5. Jacob Eason, Washington
  6. Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma
  7. Jake Fromm, Georgia
  8. Anthony Gordon, Washington State
  9. Tyler Huntley, Utah
  10. Bryce Perkins, Virginia

The Colts currently have three quarterbacks under contract for the 2020 season. Brissett enters his final year of a two-year deal he signed before the 2019 season while veteran Brian Hoyer signed a three-year deal. However, there is no dead-cap penalty if the Colts decide to part ways with the latter.

The Colts also have Chad Kelly under contract, but he’s more of a project right now.

There is no chance the Colts have a chance to get Burrow while Tagovailoa is highly unlikely as well. There’s a real possibility Herbert is gone before the No. 13 pick, but the draft is unpredictable.

However, there is a lot of hope from the fanbase that Love is the pick at No. 13. He’s a work in progress, but he has a very high ceiling given his skill set and arm talent. Will it be enough to make Ballard use his first-round pick on him, though? That’s the question.

The Colts could also build other positions with their early picks and wait until Day 3 for a player like Gordon, who has intriguing talents. But it would probably be best to avoid prospects like Fromm or Hurts, both of which have limited ceilings.

There are still months to go before the draft, but the quarterback position is going to be a hot topic of debate for the Colts leading up to it.
