Hesburgh Region – Second Round Results:
The lowest remaining seed in the tournament finds home to be the Hesburgh Region. We’ll get to the only double-digit seed remaining in just a moment but first now look at a Sweet 16 match-up that will be a battle between a common opponent.
As expected, top seed ’93 Florida State won easily over the eight, 1999 Oklahoma. Great comeback and all for the ’99 squad but let’s be honest, it didn’t stand a chance against the Game of the Century, falling 93-7%.
Fifth-seeded 2002 Florida State moves on after destroying 4. 2000 Purdue, 73-27%. The fans just don’t have the same memories of the Irish knocking off Drew Brees and eventual Big Ten Champions that I thought they would.
The lowest remaining seed in the tournament, 11th seeded Michigan from 2012 snuck by 1989 Michigan, the three seed, 53-47%. I thought Rocket’s two kick returns in ’89 had a shot at the Elite 8 and were a threat to maybe make things interesting against another 1. vs. 2. game, but I was clearly wrong.
And Brian Kelly’s biggest win to date in most people’s eyes moves on after a tough battle from one of his most stressful that happened to come in the same year as 2-seed 2012 Oklahoma gets by 7-seed Stanford of 2012, 52-48%.
