Patrick Cantlay vs. Tyrrell Hatton (+105)

Hatton is coming off a victory at the European Tour’s marquee BMW PGA Championship in a loaded field. Cantlay finished eighth in last week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open with a closing round of plus-2 73. Hatton has two international wins in 2020 to Cantlay’s zero, and the Englishman is a strong value at plus-money in this matchup.

Xander Schauffele vs. Matthew Wolff (+110)

We’ll stick with recent form and value and get Wolff following a T-2 finish at the Shriners. He ranked fifth in last week’s field with 2.24 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green per round and sixth among those to make the cut with 1.53 SG: Approach, according to Data Golf. Schauffele hasn’t played since finishing fifth at the US Open, where Wolff was the runner-up.

2020 CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek: Placing bets

Top 5: Hideki Matsuyama (+450)

The size and strength of the fields at the CJ Cup are typically comparable to a World Golf Championships event, which also follow the no-cut format. Matsuyama has two career victories and one other top 10 in WGC stroke-play events with a guaranteed 72 holes against the world’s best. He tied for third at last year’s CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges.

Top 10: Bubba Watson (+450)

Watson hasn’t been in great form in 2020 with just three top 10s and six missed cuts in 17 events. Shadow Creek’s wide fairways are seemingly more conducive to his game as he plays what is likely one of his final events ahead of the Masters Tournament (Nov. 12-15).

2020 CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek: First-round leader bets

Rory McIlroy (+1800)

McIlroy became the No. 3 betting favorite for the CJ Cup at +1100 odds following Johnson’s withdrawal Tuesday afternoon. He maintains the same positioning to lead after 18 holes, but his odds rise to a more profitable +1800. He led the PGA Tour with a first-round scoring average of 68.27 through 15 events on the 2019-20 season, and he started the US Open with a 4-under 67 before finishing at plus-6 and in eighth place.

Joohyung Kim (+12500)

Kim, 18, is the fifth-ranked Korean player in the field. He has two wins on the Korean and Asian Tours since 2019 and has a top PGA Tour result of T-33 at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.
