Despite having invested heavily in the inside linebacker position, there is still work to be done in free agency this year. Devin Bush is going into 2022 two years removed from ACL surgery and there are no more excuses for his play. Joe Schobert was supposed to be the guy to come in and pair up with Bush to form an elite tandem but a mediocre 2021 season makes him a potential salary-cap casualty.
But hope could be on the way. Heading into the second day of free agency there are already two names on the market the Steelers should consider. First is Philadelphia’s Alex Singleton. Singleton is a restricted free agent but the Eagles are not going to tender him. This means the guy who led the team in tackles the past two seasons will hit the open market. Singleton is only 28 years old and should come without a huge salary.
On Tuesday it was reported the Jacksonville Jaguars are planning to release Myles Jack. Jack is only 26 and is heading into his seventh NFL season. Jack topped 100 tackles in three of the last four seasons and is one of the more athletic inside linebackers available.
Signing either guy would free up a draft pick to use elsewhere and allow the team to release Schobert and free up $7.8 million in cap space.
