No. 15 Utah State will return to action for the first time since sweeping the competition at the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic Tournament. For the sake of the Aggie faithful, let’s hope the tryptophan has worn off and the Aggies are ready to roll against St. Mary’s.
For the first time this season Utah State will tip-off as an underdog. This will be a pivotal game for the Aggies as they look to keep their perfect record in-tact and potentially climb up the rankings. Historically the Aggies have the edge over the Gaels winning 5/8 matchups. The Gaels are looking to get back into the top 25 after being ousted earlier this season following a loss to Winthrop.
St. Mary’s is an extremely good basketball team. The Gaels are led by senior guard Jordan Ford. Ford is averaging 21 points and 2 assists per game this season while playing 31 minutes. Another player to keep your eye on is junior forward Malik Fitts. The California native is the teams’ leading rebounder and second leading scorer. He is averaging 13 points and 6 rebounds per game.
The Gaels are also the first time to outsize Utah State this season. Redshirt senior Aaron Menzies stands at a whopping 7’3”. However, Menzies sees limited action, only playing a grand total of 30 minutes this season. It is unlikely that he will cause too many problems for the Aggies.
Utah State forward Justin Bean, Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic tournament MVP, has played an excellent season so far. He is averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds a game and always makes the hustle plays. It’s no wonder why he is a fan favorite. Another Aggie that will need to continue his excellent play is junior transfer, Alphonso Anderson. After transferring from North Idaho College, Anderson has more than proved his worth. Thus far he is averaging nearly 15 points and 6 rebounds all while shooting 57% from the field and 86% from the charity stripe.
As always, the focus of the opponents’ defense will be on senior Sam Merrill. The reigning MWC MVP had his worst game of the season against North Texas. Look for him to bounce back and return to typical Sam Merrill form.
Those that stay up late to watch this game will be in for a good old fashioned barn-burner. Both of these teams feature high powered offenses and excellent coaching.
Heat yourself up some leftover turkey and mashed potatoes and get ready for a good game.
