Why Texas is still in great shape after missing on Brockermeyer twins

While losing out on the Brockermeyer twins to Alabama will sting, there’s no need to panic.

Tom Herman’s recruiting ability isn’t an issue

Herman has landed three consecutive top 10 recruiting classes, he’s currently on pace to land a fourth in 2021. The only programs to land three straight top 10 recruiting classes in the nation are Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Texas.

In 2017, Herman took over a roster that had a 47% blue-chip ratio. Blue chip players are significant in terms of competing for championships, considering the prospects are either rated four or five-star athletes. Heading into the 2020 season, Texas has a 64% blue-chip ratio which is No. 4 in the nation. He’s certainly still landing top players in the country.

Texas is still recruiting well on the offensive line

There’s no doubt that losing out on Tommy Brockermeyer at one of the toughest positions to evaluate will sting. However, they’re still in fine shape in terms of the offensive line unit moving forward.

Texas has landed seven different blue-chip recruits on the offensive line within the past two recruiting cycles. That’s more than Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State, and LSU. Out of the 2020 recruiting class specifically, Texas landed four blue-chip players on the offensive line.

Although they’ve had some misses, they’re certainly recruiting well at the position as a whole. In the last three recruiting cycles, the Longhorns have landed seven of the top 300 composite recruits on the offensive line.

With misses comes opportunities

The offensive line unit is a tough position to grade, therefore many highly-rated recruits may not pan out. On the flip side, a three-star prospect that may have flew under the radar could become your top guy. Texas’ left tackle Sam Cosmi is a perfect example of that.

Texas is in great position to potentially land a four-star offensive tackle in Kelvin Banks out of the 2022 recruiting class. He recently chose to decommit from Oklahoma State, shortly after he announced that Texas was his dream school.

Banks is a top 25 overall player out of his particular recruiting class. He’s already visited the University of Texas twice throughout his recruitment, the 6-foot-4, 285-pound athlete would be a significant addition to Herb Hand’s offensive line unit.

The Longhorns currently have several versatile players on the offensive line that are capable of stepping in at any moment. While they do need to land a few more offensive line commits in the 2021 class, offensive tackle and four-star recruit Hayden Connor has already committed to Texas.
