Where do Dolphins rank in 2020 salary cap after roster cuts?

The Miami Dolphins’ flurry of roster cuts and transactions came to a close yesterday as the team did the necessary legwork to get to the NFL’s 53-man roster limit by yesterday’s 4PM EST deadline. The team still needs to finalize their practice squad and make any potential waiver claims that come over the next few days — but the biggest waves of the storm have come and gone. Where do the Dolphins stand after their cuts in NFL salary cap space?

According to Spotrac.com, the Dolphins currently rank 10th in the NFL with just over $20.8M in cap room for the 2020 NFL season. While Miami is likely to continue to churn the bottom of the roster, it isn’t likely that the Dolphins are going to be adding any big-name free agents from here on out.

Ironically enough, despite sitting 10th in the NFL in cap space, Miami has only the third highest salary cap space among teams in the AFC East. Both the Patriots (who own the most cap room) and the Jets (who sit third in the league) are significantly ahead of where the Dolphins rank. The division’s fourth team, the Buffalo Bills, ranks just two spots behind the Dolphins — which gives the division plenty of long-term flexibility to add talent in the years to come.

The Dolphins’ ability to carry over cap space into 2021 is helpful in keeping the team set up for a big signing or two next offseason despite the league’s upcoming salary cap reduction in the face of league revenue sharing losses. With former veteran linebacker Raekwon McMillan now no longer looming as a potential resigning, the Dolphins will enter next offseason with hardly any pressing expiring contracts on their radars.
