WATCH: Sam Howell tosses first touchdown of NFL season

Former UNC quarterback Sam Howell, who holds 27 school records, threw his first NFL touchdown pass to Brian Robinson Jr. on Sunday.

Washington Commanders fans wondered how long it would take quarterback Sam Howell to throw his first NFL touchdown pass of the season.

How about his first NFL game of the 2023 season?

Howell, the former UNC gunslinger who holds 27 school records, scrambled out of the pocket and, with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, found Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. for six.

UNC fans saw a lot of this from 2019-2021, so it was stunning to see Howell fall so far down the 2022 NFL Draft board.

In the offseason, though, the decision under center came down to Howell or veteran journeyman QB Jacoby Brissett. The latter has plenty more NFL experience, but the Commanders didn’t draft Howell for no reason.

Plays like the one above, where Howell showcases his mobility, arm strength and accuracy, give Washington a lot of hope in 2023.
