USC QB Caleb Williams dishes on NFL tanking rumors and his hometown Commanders

USC quarterback Caleb Williams sat down with USA TODAY Sports to discuss a multitude of topics.

All eyes will be on sunny Los Angeles, California, for the upcoming season as Caleb Williams looks to make history.

We haven’t seen anyone win back-to-back Heisman Memorial Trophies since Archie Griffin did it at Ohio State in 1974 and 1975. It has been almost 50 years since the Buckeyes set the standard and Williams might have the best opportunity to join him in college football immortality.

Williams’ head coach Lincoln Riley has produced three Heisman Trophy winners. Baker Mayfield won it in 2017 and Kyler Murray won it in 2018. Following their accomplishment, the former Oklahoma quarterbacks were drafted No. 1 overall that same offseason. Should Williams win the Heisman again, he will likely be the third quarterback to accomplish this under Riley’s guidance.

Williams recently caught up with USA TODAY Sports where he discussed the teams tanking in 2023 to earn the top spot in the 2024 NFL draft.

“It wasn’t any surprise or anything. I work hard to try and be the best, so there’s no surprise (with) any of that, whatever they talk about on TV or social media. Not too pressing. Not bothered by it. … I’ve been working really hard to have moments like this, to be in big-time moments or big-time games, whatever the case may be. … It is cool because, like I said, I’ve been working hard for many, many years to be in this position and (have) this opportunity, to maybe re-up on the Heisman and go get the golden trophy at the end in January in Houston and possibly go No. 1.”

Touchdown Wire recently released a 2024 mock draft where they have Williams going No. 1 overall.
