Going into the basketball offseason, Tar Heels Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tar Heels’ roster.
Next up in our series is guard Caleb Love who saw improvement from his first season on campus to the end of his sophomore year. Love was an instrumental piece in UNC’s run to the title game and came up big for the Tar Heels in a few NCAA Tournament games.
The former five-star recruit picked North Carolina over a handful of other offers and when he arrived on campus, he was considered a point guard in UNC’s offense. While he can still play the point, Love is better suited as a shooting guard alongside R.J. Davis. The two of them makeup one of the best returning backcourts in all of college basketball and if both take a step forward again next season, UNC has a good chance of cutting down the nets in April.

Year in Review
Love’s UNC basketball legacy is already stamped heading into his junior year with multiple, breathtaking moments. His three-point dagger in the Final Four that sent Coach K into retirement already has a place in the UNC Basketball museum.
The five-star recruit explosiveness was on full display this season becoming a household name around the league. Sharing the backcourt with Davis, Love showcased an aggressive attack becoming the go-to person late.
Love had 13 games where he scored 20 or more with his highest-scoring game coming against UCLA in the NCAA tournament.
Love finished with 30 points, knocking down six threes to help UNC beat UCLA 73-66. The St. Louis native followed that performance two games later with 28 points and four assists in the 81-77 Final Four victory against Duke.
Once the season ended, many speculated that Love would be trading in his Carolina blue threads for an NBA draft hat. Instead, the sophomore announced his decision to run it back with the Iron Five in hopes of finishing the job.
Cutting down the nets and walking out a national champion.
