The 2023 offseason is an important one for the UNC basketball program as Hubert Davis will look to fill voids crated by player departures. While the focus will be on the transfer portal, UNC may get some help from a future recruiting class.
The topic of reclassification has come up for a few UNC commits in the 2024 class. Both Elliot Cadeau and Ian Jackson have been mentioned in terms of possibly reclassifying and joining the two-man 2023 class. Cadeau spoke on his situation on Saturday and now Jackson is talking about his.
In an article on Zag’s Blog, Adam Zagoria talked to Jackson about the latest in his recruitment, including reclassifying:
Reclassification is “something to consider, but right now my mindset is to stay” in 2024, the 6-foot-6 Jackson, who attends Cardinal Hayes High School in The Bronx, told “ZagsBlog” after USA Basketball Junior National Team minicamp practice on Friday.
Jackson said he’s taking “two or three” online classes that could facilitate a reclassification if he chose that route.
“As of right now, I’m supposed to be” taking classes,” he said. “I’m planning on staying on for high school next year, but I’m taking classes, yeah.”
Jackson has remained consistent with his mindset in terms of reclassification over the past few months, so the answer really isn’t surprising. The option is there for the top-five player to move to the 2023 class and it sounds like UNC will have a roster spot if he wants it.
However, it appears he will stay in 2024 with a class that is ranked No. 1 overall for the Tar Heels.
