Twitter reacts to controversial call made by third base umpire in Game 1 of super regional

A controversial call made by the third base umpire led to plenty of fans voicing their frustration on Twitter.

Twitter users reacted to a hotly debated call in the fifth inning of Game 1 of the Alabama-Wake Forest super regional on Saturday.

Wake Forest’s Danny Corona had a two-strike count at the plate with two outs. Alabama starting pitcher Luke Holman threw a breaking ball in the dirt to induce what appeared to be a swinging third strike. However, the pitch was called a ball and, on appeal, the third base umpire ruled it was a check swing.

Corona launched a home run to right field one pitch later, raising the ire of the Alabama bench. Alabama hitting coach Matt Reida was ejected.

Needless to say, the call might have changed the outcome of the game had it been called in Alabama’s favor. Instead, the Demon Deacons came away with a 5-4 win.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to voice their frustrations.
