BATON ROUGE – LSU Soccer and head coach Sian Hudson named Trey Thompson as the program’s second assistant coach for the upcoming 2023 season.
“Trey has been a valuable addition to our staff and we are very excited that he will now be in a full-time capacity with us,” said Hudson. “He has a great eye for the game and has worked diligently with our attacking unit this past year and we have reaped the rewards of his work with increased goal production. Trey has a great relationship with the girls and staff and I very much look forward to seeing his influence continue to grow next season.”
A native of Mesa, Arizona, Thompson joined the program in 2022 and served as the volunteer coach for the Tigers in their NCAA Championship second round appearance last year.
“I am filled with gratitude for this opportunity,” said Thompson. “I am excited and honored to be working with a program of this magnitude and with coaches that share a common vision. This staff is committed to developing student athletes and I’m ready to continue to grow this program.”
Thompson provides familiarity and knowledge of the sport as he has experience in both roles of player and coach.
In his playing career, Thompson was a two-time All-American striker at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he played from 2005-2007. He graduated in 2007 with his bachelor of arts degree in business communications and continued on to pursue his soccer career.
Thompson was invited to the USL combine following his collegiate career and signed with the Lancaster Rattlers in 2007, a professional team now known as FC Santa Clarita.
He continued his playing career with the Southern California Seahorses, a club based in La Mirada, California, for two years from 2008-2009.
The Arizona native began his professional coaching career in 2009 in his home state with the Sereno Soccer Club. As the head coach, Thompson oversaw 12 teams and trained players like Ilijah Paul, who was the No. 7 pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) Superdraft.
He has coached various other professional players including U.S. Men’s National Team Member Richie Ledezma and Mexico Women’s National Team Member Estheffanny Barreras.
Thompson continued to work for the Sereno Soccer Club as it transitioned to Real Salt Lake/Utah Royals in Arizona from 2017-2021 prior to joining the Tigers in 2022.
During his time with Real Salt Lake – AZ, he won a National Championships with the U17 girls’ team in 2021 and was a Regional finalist with the U19 boys’ team in 2019.
Thompson was named the Arizona Competitive Coach Of The Year in 2019 for his efforts.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities with Sereno/Real Salt Lake Arizona, Thompson also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Scottsdale Community College from 2013-2017 and specialized in goalkeeper training.
Now, Thompson will transition into a full-time assistant coach position for LSU and continue to use his coaching experience to develop our current players and recruit future tigers for the program.
