Tre White transfer requires Andy Enfield to do more work in the portal

Recruiting Bronny James, if achieved, won’t be enough for #USC. Enfield has to get a prime portal piece after Tre White left.

The hype surrounding USC basketball is connected to the distinct possibility that Bronny James will join the program, joining top recruit Isaiah Collier and returning star Boogie Ellis.

It is easy to think that if USC successfully recruits Bronny James, it will have all it needs to become an elite team in 2024.

Not so.

The Tre White transfer deprives USC of a solid wing defender who is capable of being a role-player scorer, the kind of supporting-cast player a Final Four contender needs. Sure, having a Bronny-Collier-Ellis backcourt is great, but that’s too much offense and not enough defense. It’s also a lot of guards and not as much size.

USC needs a physical guard and/or a stretch four with a little more length, power, and proven defensive acumen. Enfield has to get at least one of those pieces, if not both, in the transfer portal.

Getting Bronny would be great, but let’s not think that fills the remaining roster need for USC.

It would seem that Tre White transferring means a portal addition is in the works. Enfield simply needs to make sure he delivers and gives USC a high-quality piece in exchange for White’s departure.
