We’re all on edge these days as we try to make our way through a new normal that can be very frightening and anxiety inducing.
Plus, we’re doing it all without live sports being there for us, which has proven to be a great escape for us in the past when life gets hard or scary or boring or crazy.
I’ve been so hungry for sports content that I’ve spent the past two weekends watching an old golf tournament (the 2008 US Open, which Tiger Woods won in a nutty playoff at Torrey Pines) and old NBA games (more Knicks-Bulls playoff games please, NBA TV).
But there could be some sports help on the way, and I’m not talking about the UFC which continues to try to put on big events that don’t need to happen right now.
I’m talking about Phil Mickelson vs. Tiger Woods in a second golf showdown.
These rumors began when Phil replied to a random Twitter follower who had asked him if he and Tiger and a cameraman could get get something done. Phil said he’s “working on it” and then assured his follower that he’s not a “tease.”
My big concern here, however, is Tiger’s health as he didn’t play in a few big tournaments before the PGA Tour season was suspended a few weeks ago. But whatever, let’s just imagine he’s healthy because we want this to happen.
This could be just what we need right now and I feel like it’s something that could be done rather easily considering all the technology we have at our fingertips.
Golf is pretty good at social distancing, as Phil and Tiger could easily stand six feet apart from each other at all times.
Cameras could be as easy as someone walking near them and some up in the air on a crane, far way from Phil and Tiger.
They don’t even need caddies… somebody just get them a couple of pushcarts and they’d be fine. Imagine seeing Tiger and Phil using pushcarts in 2020!?
I feel like the more stripped down of a production the better, which could lead to even more banter between the two and not as much as the forced type as we saw in their first showdown back in 2018.
This could be a very fun way for all of us to help itch that itch we have for watching live, competitive sports. Any sense of normalcy these days is so welcoming, and this would provide that for us.
Also, imagine the instant betting that would be going on by people watching from home? I keep seeing people betting on simulated NBA video games. Now you get two of the greatest golfers to ever live going head to head with everyone at home looking for something to bet on?
Look. Out.
This can all be done very safely. This can all be done pretty easily. This could all be done very soon.
Come on, Phil and Tiger.
We need this.
Monday’s big winner: Steve Belichick.
My friend and colleague Henry McKenna covers the Patriots for us and he has delivered a great piece when we need some good reading to distract us from serious things. His profile on Bill Belichick’s on, Steve Belichick, is exactly that, as Henry does a great job of helping us get to know the Patriots’ defensive coach much more than we did a few days ago.
