The Texas Longhorns didn’t play their best on Saturday. Save for a strong game by the Texas running backs, the Longhorns gave a D- performance against Iowa State.
Steve Sarkisian’s squad overcame a comedy of errors against the Cyclones. Quinn Ewers sailed a touchdown pass. Later in the game, Casey Cain dropped another potential conversion.
Though the stats may not tell it, defenders displayed poor tackling technique, bad pursuit and poor coverage for a good part of Saturday’s game. Bert Auburn even missed a chip shot field goal. In the end, the Longhorns’ five-star talent overwhelmed the Cyclones.
Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson dominated the game. Despite a slow start, Robinson ran for 135 yards on 28 carries. Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 71 yards, burying the Iowa State 3-3-5 defense into the turf.
Much will be made of Quinn Ewers’ struggles. His stat line was certainly pedestrian and his performance was below his standard. Ewers finished 17 for 26 for 172 yards passing.
Despite it all, the freshman quarterback threw three touchdowns, committed no turnovers and won the game on a fourth and goal touchdown to Xavier Worthy. Worthy dropped off an eager Iowa State defender in the end zone before separating on a whip route for the score. He led Texas receivers with 8 receptions for 72 yards.
Texas improves to 5-2 overall, while Iowa State drops to 3-4. The Longhorns will face No. 7 Oklahoma State on the road next week.
