LSU’s secondary took a hit on Wednesday afternoon with the news of freshman cornerback PJ Woodland entering the transfer portal.
Woodland’s transfer is a surprise after he looked in line to compete for a starting job in 2025.
Woodland garnered hype over the summer as a true freshman that could make an immediate impact.
While he didn’t earn a full-time role in 2024, he saw 133 defensive snaps over LSU’s 12 games. According to PFF, he was targeted 15 times and allowed 131 yards. He recorded two pass breakups while giving up one touchdown.
Most of LSU’s transfer losses this year have been depth pieces, but losing a talented young player like Woodland hurts.
LSU coaches were high on Woodland. He was a three-star recruit, but he quickly ascended LSU’s depth chart. But after one season in Baton Rouge, Woodland will look for a new home.
The Tigers were already hoping to land a few cornerbacks from the transfer portal. Woodland’s departure makes that goal even more urgent.
LSU will be thin at corner when it meets Baylor in the bowl game. If Zy Alexander opts out to prepare for the NFL draft, LSU will be reaching deep down the depth chart.
