It wasn’t the most explosive first half, but Philadelphia rode the emotion of Nick Foles’ retirement and a raucous crowd to keep Atlanta out of the end zone late in the first half. The Eagles hold a 7-6 lead heading into the second half.

Playing without A.J. Brown, Philadelphia used a DeVonta Smith touchdown catch to establish a 7-3 first-half lead before the Falcons pulled within one.

With the second half set to begin, here are takeaways and observations from the first half.

Primarily a punt returner, Covey joined DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson for the second snap, lined up as an outside receiver. Covey had two catches in the first half, for six yards on two targets.

Monday saw a matchup of two similar running backs with the veteran Saquon Barkley, and second year running back Bijan Robinson. Through two quarters, Robinson has the lead. The Falcons star has 10 carries for 72 yards, and one catch for 72 yards. Barkley has eight carries for 37 yards rushing in the first half.

Whether it was a punishment or by some design, Eagles star defensive tackle Jalen Carter didn’t see a snap in the game’s first series. He was back in the lineup for the second series. CArter finished the first half with one tackle.

At this rate the Eagles best offensive play is Jalen Hurts running. Hurts has 47 yards rushing on the Eagles final drive of the half. Hurts was 9-13 passing for 70 yards and one touchdown. He had six carries for 51 yards rushing.

Smith was going to be the focal point of the Eagles offense with A.J. Brown out and the Heisman Trophy winner rose to the occasion. Smith had three catches for 30 yards and a touchdown on the Eagles four possessions.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers lead NFL in tackles entering Week 2

Two former Wisconsin Badgers lead NFL in tackles entering Week 2

Wisconsin is one of the few programs with a true claim as ‘Linebacker-U.’

The Badgers currently have seven former linebackers playing in the NFL. That list is headlined by all-world defensive star T.J. Watt, Andrew Van Ginkel and Leo Chenal.

Related: How Braelon Allen, every former Wisconsin Badger performed in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season

It should not be surprising that two former Badger linebackers currently lead the entire NFL in tackles after Week 1: Philadelphia Eagles ILB Zack Baun (15 tackles) and Chicago Bears ILB T.J. Edwards (15).

Baun and Edwards led their teams’ defensive efforts in their opening games. Baun emerged out of nowhere to pace the Eagles’ defense with those 15 tackles, one tackle for loss and two sacks. Edwards, meanwhile, continues to live up to the lofty contract that lured him back to his hometown Bears.

Edwards’ high total is no surprise. His six-year NFL career includes 559 total tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits, five fumble recoveries and five interceptions. He has been one of the NFL’s better-tackling linebackers for a half-decade.

Baun, on the other hand, barely saw the field on defense during his four years with the New Orleans Saints. The Eagles signed him this offseason to a one-year deal, with the plan to move him back to his more natural stand-up position. That has already paid dividends with his Week 1 performance. Baun’s 15 tackles are already halfway to his career high of 30.

The two former Badgers will be back on the field in Week 2 as they look to continue to pace the NFL in its most important defensive statistic.

WATCH: Devin White has a strong response to Vic Fangio naming Nakobe Dean the starter

WATCH: Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Devin White offers a strong response to Vic Fangio naming Nakobe Dean starter

Nakobe Dean spent the off-season and summer saying all the right things about his recovery from a foot injury that ended his 2023 season prematurely. For most of the training camp, the idea was that Dean might lose his job to Devin White.

White exited Tampa Bay for Philadelphia with the hope of retooling his career while becoming the missing piece that gets this Eagles team over the Super Bowl hump.  During the summer, it looked like White had shown he was the best linebacker on the roster while assuming a leadership role, resulting in the former Buccaneers star becoming a defensive general.

White, a 2024 free agent signing, talked about being a team leader and upgrading Philadelphia’s linebacker position.

White missed the season opener with a foot injury, and his status for Week 2 is uncertain. However, after Vic Fangio clarified that Dean is his starter, it won’t matter.

A visibly frustrated White addressed Fangio’s comments and more before the Eagles’ Thursday practice.

Dean and Fangio’s favorite Zack Baun held down the fort on defense, with the former Saints linebacker logging 15 tackles, two sacks, one tackle for loss, and 2 QB hits. Dean was solid, logging four tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass defended.

They’ll need to be even more dynamic in Week 2, with Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson heading to Philadelphia.

Wisconsin position group dominates in opening weekend of 2024 NFL season

Wisconsin position group dominates in opening weekend of 2024 NFL season

Several former Wisconsin linebackers erupted during Week 1 of the 2024 NFL slate this past weekend.

Among the stars were Kansas City Chiefs LB Leo Chenal, Chicago Bears ILB T.J. Edwards, Philadelphia Eagles ILB Zack Baun, Minnesota Vikings OLB Andrew Van Ginkel and Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt.

Each playmaker was a handful for the offenses they lined up against. Watt and Baun even clinched their squads’ opening weekend victories with game-ending sacks in the final sequence of their respective contests.

While many members of the Badger faithful are accustomed to witnessing Watt decimate his adversaries regularly, Wisconsin fans were able to observe some spectacular performances from other UW alumni who don’t receive the same type of attention.

Baun, who recorded just 30 total tackles a season ago with the New Orleans Saints, registered 15 tackles, two sacks and a tackle for loss in the Eagles’ 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Edwards also showed out for the entire Week 1 window. He led Chicago with 15 tackles and recovered a Will Levis fumble to help the Bears shift momentum against the Tennessee Titans at Soldier Field.

Van Ginkel, who made his Vikings debut on Sunday, intercepted a Daniel Jones’ pass and took it to the house for six points en route to a blowout victory over the New York Giants. And that’s just to name a few highlights.

While notorious for producing high end offensive linemen and running backs, UW also knows a thing or two about developing linebackers. Eight former Wisconsin linebackers currently play in the NFL, six of whom figure to serve as defensive staples for their crews this season.

Ex-Saints linebacker Zack Baun had a big-time debut with the Eagles

Ex-Saints linebacker Zack Baun had a big-time debut with the Eagles. He totaled 15 tackles and had two sacks, tying his career total:

Credit where it’s due: Zack Baun delivered in a big spot for his new Philadelphia Eagles team. The Eagles left Brazil with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Friday night, and Baun’s efforts were a big part of their success. The former New Orleans Saints linebacker ended the night with 15 combined tackles, two quarterback hits, and two sacks — including a game-winner off of Malik Willis, who had replaced the injured Jordan Love.

And it’s not like Baun was cleaning up tackles 8 or 9 yards downfield. According to the official NFL Gamebook, Baun averaged 3.0 yards per tackle on his 15 stops. Just two of those tackles ended after the Packers offense gained 8 or more yards. He had five stops at or behind the line of scrimmage and three more within two yards of it.

He just needed this opportunity, which he wasn’t given in New Orleans. The Saints already had Demario Davis locked in at one linebacker spot but they chose to draft Pete Werner a year after they traded up for Baun. As highly regarded Dennis Allen and linebackers coach Michael Hodges are, they couldn’t figure out how to get Baun on the field for most of the four years he spent in New Orleans. A fifth of his 660 career defensive snaps with the Saints (142) came in the final six games he played in a Saints uniform. He played almost twice as many snaps on special teams (1,293).

What’s even more frustrating is that Baun wasn’t used much different in Vic Fangio’s Eagles defense than what he saw in Allen’s system. Per Pro Football Focus charting, he lined up on the line of scrimmage as a pass-rushing outside linebacker just 12 times. Just like he did with the Saints, Baun spent the majority of his 67 defensive snaps off the ball as an inside linebacker (47 times). He covered the slot seven times and was once asked to cover a receiver out wide.

Still, the fact that Baun had as many sacks in his first game with the Eagles as he did in 64 appearances with the Saints (including two playoff games) is embarrassing. It highlights a common criticism of the team extending even beyond Allen’s tenure. The Saints have struggled to draft, develop, and retain their own talent over the years, and Baun is another great example of it just like Trey Hendrickson, Marcus Williams, Alex Anzalone, and Kaden Elliss, among other players.

Too many draft-day gambles and picks spent chasing upside have come back to haunt them. When Baun signed with the Eagles this spring, it left Cesar Ruiz as the only member of the team’s 2020 draft class still on the roster. Ruiz and Erik McCoy are the only draft picks remaining from the 2019 and 2018 draft classes, too. Of the six-man 2021 class, Pete Werner is the only member to have signed a new deal; it feels unlike Payton Turner returns next year, and Paulson Adebo may be get priced out on the free agent market.

So there’s a good chance Baun isn’t the last player drafted by the Saints to go on and find more success somewhere else. But Saints fans will get a good look at him in just a few weeks when Baun and the Eagles visit the Caesars Superdome on Sept. 22.

Former Wisconsin linebacker records game-clinching sack in Eagles win over Packers

Former Wisconsin linebacker records game-clinching sack Eagles win over Packers

Former Wisconsin Badgers linebacker Zack Baun dominated in the Philadelphia Eagles’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Baun, who played his previous four NFL seasons at linebacker with the New Orleans Saints, was by far and away the best player for Eagles’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio during the Week 1 matchup.

The Brown Deer, Wisconsin native registered 15 total tackles, all but four of which were solo, two sacks, two quarterback hits and one tackle for loss in the Eagles’ 34-29 victory over the Packers. He even clinched the victory with a sack on quarterback Malik Willis on third down during the game’s final sequence.

Baun’s previous career-high in tackles was eight in 2021 with the Saints. He nearly doubled it in his Philadelphia debut.

Throughout Friday’s broadcast, NBC color analyst and former NFL quarterback Todd Blackledge continued to mention how impressive Baun was for the Eagles. He wasn’t wrong.

https://twitter.com/Eagles/status/1832265205906100510

Whether it be defending the pass, run or exploding down the offensive line to apply pressure to starting quarterback Jordan Love, Baun flew all over Corinthians Arena in Brazil.

Baun is the second Badger alumnus to appear in Week 1 following Chiefs’ linebacker Leo Chenal strong debut vs. the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. Chenal notched seven tackles, one tackle for loss and two pass deflections in the 27-20 win at Arrowhead.

If he continues to play like this, Baun will quickly become a staple in the middle of Philadelphia’s defensive unit. In a division with the Dallas Cowboys and budding Washington Commanders, his impact could impact the way the entire defense performs throughout the remainder of the season.
