Panthers Week 5 injury report: Frankie Luvu, Xavier Woods questionable vs. 49ers

The Panthers listed LB Frankie Luvu and S Xavier Woods as questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers.

The Carolina Panthers have quite a tall task ahead of them, particularly on offense. And, unfortunately, they won’t have the help of one of their newest weapons to ease that burden.

As expected, wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr.—who told reporters on Thursday that he expects to miss the next few games—has been ruled out for Week 5’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The third-year pass catcher is currently dealing with injuries to both of his hamstrings, a pair of setbacks that led to his early exit from last Sunday’s 26-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Carolina may also be without linebacker Frankie Luvu and safety Xavier Woods, who have both been designated as questionable for the contest. Considering the impact Luvu has made thus far as well as the importance of Woods in the absence of Jeremy Chinn, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, being without either defender would be a considerable hit to take for the Panthers.

Head coach Matt Rhule did, however, say on Friday that he expects both men to be in uniform.

Here’s the Week 5 injury report in full:

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey removed from injury report on Thursday

On Thursday, the Panthers had a full session of Christian McCaffrey—who has now been removed from the Week 5 injury report.

No more bruises, scratches or dings for Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey!

Three days ahead of the Week 5 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, McCaffrey was removed from the team’s injury report. After his usual Wednesday off, the star rusher—in what’s obviously a great sign for the struggling Carolina offense—was back at practice in pads and all.

The sixth-year veteran has popped up on the list numerous times thus far. From being cleated on his shin prior to the season opener to sustaining a much more worrisome thigh injury last week, McCaffrey’s status has been one to keep a regular eye on through the first month of the campaign.

The Panthers were, however, without two key defensive players during today’s session—linebacker Frankie Luvu and safety Xavier Woods. Luvu has been, perhaps, the most impactful defender for the team to this point. And Woods, who has also been quite active, is an even more important piece following Jeremy Chinn’s placement on injured reserve.

Additionally, wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr.—who is now dealing with issues to both of his hamstrings—told reporters he’s expecting to miss a few weeks due to the setback.

Here’s Thursday’s report in full:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
LB Frankie Luvu Shoulder Limited DNP

Panthers keep Xavier Woods, Laviska Shenault Jr. out of Wednesday’s practice

The Panthers were without RB Christian McCaffrey (rest), WR Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) and S Xavier Woods (hamstring) at Wednesday’s practice.

Wednesday wasn’t particularly a great day for the Carolina Panthers to be without Xavier Woods. Unfortunately, however, that was the case.

After losing starting full safety Jeremy Chinn to kick off the afternoon, in a move that’ll keep the versatile third-year defender on injured reserve for at least four weeks, the team kept starting strong safety Xavier Woods out of practice. As he was last week, the 27-year-old was listed on the opening Week 5 injury report with a hamstring issue.

Woods has played a hefty role for the Carolina defense thus far, having already totaled 30 tackles through four games. While his status is still— obviously—up in the air to this point, the Panthers did sign safety Juston Burris up from the practice squad to help fill the current void at the position.

As far as the other side of the ball, running back Christian McCaffrey—in perhaps a slice of encouraging news—was listed with just a rest designation for his day off. Wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., additionally, missed the session due to the hamstring setback he sustained this past Sunday.

Here’s Wednesday’s report in its entirety:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
RB Christian McCaffrey Rest DNP
LB Frankie Luvu Shoulder Limited
DE Marquis Haynes Sr. Knee Limited
CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III Thigh DNP
S Xavier Woods Hamstring DNP
WR Laviska Shenault Jr. Hamstring DNP
LB Shaq Thompson Knee Limited

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ Week 1 loss to Browns

In his NFL debut, 2022 sixth overall pick Ikem Ekwonu earned PFF’s worst offensive grade amongst all Panthers in Week 1.

You know a lot of these numbers we’re about to show you from the Carolina Panthers’ season-opening loss to the Cleveland Browns aren’t going to be pretty. But, we’ll show you anyway . . . because we’re that nice.

Here are the best and worst Pro Football Focus grades from the Week 1 defeat.

Ranking the Panthers’ top offseason acquisitions

Although the Panthers still don’t have a good answer under center, they’ve made a handful of important additions this offseason. So, let’s rank ’em!

The first big step Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule needed to take in 2022 was, well, taken. As we sit here now, on June 22, we can say that the man has pieced together a largely successful offseason to this point.

Although they remain void of an actual answer under center, the additions around that particular spot have put this Panthers team in a better position to succeed this upcoming season. So, let’s take a look (and rank) Carolina’s top acquisitions of the past few months.

4 things to know about new Panthers S Xavier Woods

Here are four interesting facts about new Panthers S Xavier Woods.

The Carolina Panthers have had themselves quite a sound offseason thus far. And part of their harmonious retooling has seen a bevy of fresh faces added to the roster.

So, in helping you get to know the new guys a little bit better, we’ll give you four interesting facts about each free-agent signing the Panthers have made.

We’ll start with their first catch, safety Xavier Woods.

S Xavier Woods, Panthers agree on three-year deal

Woods is taking his talents to Carolina

After a one-and-done season with the Minnesota Vikings, safety Xavier Woods is reportedly taking his talents to the east coast to join the Carolina Panthers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It’s a three-year, $15.75 million deal that will offer Woods a bit of stability after spending his previous two seasons playing for the Vikings and Dallas Cowboys.

He started in all 17 games in 2021 and finished the season with 108 tackles, three interceptions, 10 pass deflections, one sack and two forced fumbles.

Panthers to sign S Xavier Woods

It’s a new day, yes it is, as the Panthers plan to sign former Cowboys and Vikings safety Xavier Woods.

The Carolina Panthers weren’t just sending players off at the unofficial start of free agency on Monday. They actually reeled one in!

Former Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings safety Xavier Woods was the catch, as first reported by Josina Anderson of USA TODAY Sports. Woods has come onboard for a three-year deal worth $15.75 million according to Anderson.

A three-time All-Conference-USA selection during his time at Louisiana Tech University, Woods broke into the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys back in the 2017 draft. He’d go on to spend four seasons in the Lone Star State—amassing 247 combined tackles, eight interceptions and five forced fumbles.

Woods moved on to Minnesota this past season. There, he recorded career-highs in tackles (108), interceptions (three) and pass deflections (10).

With the Panthers needing a complement alongside Jeremy Chinn at the top of the secondary, Woods will slot right in as a starter—presumably replacing free agent Juston Burris.

Ranking 5 free agents from the NFC North that should interest the Seahawks

Now, here are the top-five choices from around the slim-pickings NFC North that should interest Seattle if they hit the market.

The Seattle Seahawks could use a home run in free agency this offseason if they’re going to jump back into the playoff picture in 2022. While they’re not typically big spenders, they do have enough cash to make at least 2-3 splash signings this month. So, we’re taking a tour around the league to look at the best pending free agents in each division. You can find our rankings for the AFC West here and the NFC West here.

Today, we will look at the top five choices from the slim-pickings NFC North that should interest Seattle if they hit the market.

No defensive player was on the field more than Vikings S Xavier Woods

Xavier Woods was the Vikings’ ironman.

Minnesota Vikings safety Xavier Woods is giving new meaning to the word ironman.

A stat pulled by CBS Sports’ Joel Corry lists Woods as the only defensive player to play in 100 percent of his team’s snaps in the 2021 regular season. If anything, it shows the overall toughness, fortune and reliability for a player to be on the field with such a flawless consistency.

It also shows the faith former coach Mike Zimmer had in Woods to be so heavily involved in his first year with the team. He signed a one-year deal with the Vikings after playing with the Dallas Cowboys for the previous four seasons.

The sixth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech finished the season with 108 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 10 pass deflections.

Woods is an unrestricted free agent heading into the offseason. Considering all of the struggles the team had in the secondary, there’s a good chance there will be some interest in having him back in 2022.

But after coming off a career-season, I wouldn’t expect the 26-year-old defensive back to make any hasty decisions, especially with other suitors likely to be vying for his services.
