WWE SmackDown results: Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens finally rediscover their friendship

Live WWE SmackDown results for March 17 from Kansas City, featuring a face-to-face showdown between Sami Zayn and Jey Uso.

Kansas City is the home of champions, like the Chiefs. For WWE SmackDown this week, it’s also going to be home to another champion and a gentleman who wants to know more about exactly what’s in his heart.

The champ in question is Jey Uso, holder of one-half of both of WWE’s men’s tag team titles. Over the course of the last 10 months, it looked like Jey was coming around on Sami Zayn, sticking up for him when no one else would despite some heavy initial skepticism.

But considering how Jey laid out Sami just when it looked like their bond might overcome Uso’s familial ties, perhaps he was just playing the long game all along. That’s undoubtedly what Zayn will attempt to find out when the two men come face to face at the T-Mobile Center.

A confrontation of a decidedly more straightforwardly physical kind is also on tap for this Friday night. Adam Pearce attempted to find Gunther a WrestleMania opponent last week, but was foiled when both Sheamus and Drew McIntyre pinned people at the exact same instant. The enemies turned friends turned rivals again will attempt to settle things in the ring in Kansas City for a shot at the Ring General’s Intercontinental Championship in Los Angeles.

(Though considering many still expect that to be a Triple Threat match, be on guard for more hijinks on SmackDown.)

Last but certainly not least, Cody Rhodes usually calls Raw home, but since he’s got a date with destiny at WrestleMania, it behooves him to show up as often as possible on WWE TV. He’ll be on hand tonight as well, and the Bloodline will have to watch out for him.

WWE SmackDown results in 60 seconds:

  • Cody Rhodes tries to bring Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens back together, but KO still isn’t feeling it
  • As Owens looks to leave, Zayn insists they’re more than friends, they’re brothers, and he says he loves KO … who still gets in his car and drives off
  • Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio def. Santos Escobar and Zelina Vega by pinfall
  • Dominik wants to diss his dad some more, but quiets up when he sees his dad walking backstage on the big screen …
  • … and Rey Mysterio is emotional while explaining exactly how things with Dominik are making him feel, but he insists he won’t fight his son, ever
  • Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez def. Emma and Tegan Nox by pinfall to advance to a Fatal 4-Way Tag Team match at WrestleMania
  • Charlotte Flair is here to talk, but Rhea Ripley wants to do more than that, setting off a pretty crazy brawl
  • Zayn sounds like he might be giving up on Owens after what happened tonight
  • Xavier Woods def. LA Knight by pinfall
  • Knight says he’ll fight Dominik Mysterio if Rey won’t, which earns him a slap from the masked man
  • Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre ends in a no contest thanks to Imperium’s intervention, so Adam Pearce tells Gunther he’ll have to defend against both men at WrestleMania
  • “This is what you wanted, right Uce?” Zayn and Jey Uso have their say, Jimmy Uso comes to his brother’s aid … but Owens comes to help Sami

WWE SmackDown results: Jey Uso explains himself, Gunther doesn’t learn his WrestleMania opponent

Get live WWE SmackDown results for March 10, 2023, as Jey Uso reunites with the Bloodline and a Fatal 5-Way finds a contender for Gunther.

Jey Uso is coming back home … but will he be welcomed back to the Bloodline? That’s the biggest question hanging over tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Jey left no doubt that his loyalties lie with his blood family this week on Raw, when he simultaneously superkicked Sami Zayn and ripped the hearts out of fans who hoped he would stand up to his Tribal Chief. That’s a big mark in his favor when it comes to his standing in the group.

Yet he made Roman Reigns sweat it out quite a bit, and that’s something the champ generally doesn’t like. With both men in the building tonight, we’ll see if it’s all love or tough love on the menu for Jey — and brother Jimmy, for that matter, as Reigns tasked him with getting Jey back into the fold.

A blank on the WrestleMania match list will also be filled in this week on SmackDown. Gunther knows he’ll be defending his Intercontinental Championship in Los Angeles; he just isn’t sure who will be standing across the ring from him. A Fatal 5-Way will determine that tonight, with Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Karrion Kross, LA Knight and Xavier Woods (subbing in for injured Kofi Kingston) all vying for the title shot.

There’s also tag team action on tap for Pittsburgh. Braun Strowman and Ricochet have formed an effective duo so far, one that can fend off almost any challenge. They’ll have their hands full this week, however, as they have to step in against the Viking Raiders.

Plus the word is that WWE will (finally) start announcing WWE Hall of Fame inductees for 2023, which fans have been chomping at the bit to see.

WWE SmackDown results in 60 seconds:

  • Paul Heyman is standing outside in the rain waiting for The Usos to arrive, and Jey says he’ll say what he needs to say about his betrayal of Sami Zayn in the ring tonight
  • The Fatal 5-Way match for a WWE Intercontinental Championship shot at WrestleMania ends with both Drew McIntyre and Sheamus making simultaneous pins
  • Heyman says the Bloodline can handle challenges in many different ways, but he thinks the way to attack Cody Rhodes is with the truth
  • McIntyre and Sheamus continue to bicker backstage, with the other Brawling Brutes needing to drag their leader away
  • Rey Mysterio is announced for the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2023, Dominik Mysterio quickly interrupts, and Legado Del Fantasma isn’t happy about it
  • The Judgment Day def. Legado Del Fantasma by pinfall, and Dominik Mysterio insults his dad some more
  • Charlotte Flair asks Adam Pearce for an opponent for a match tonight and tells him to “hang in there”
  • Viking Raiders def. Braun Strowman and Ricochet by pinfall
  • Gunther berates Pearce for his inability to find him a challenger, singular, but AP says Sheamus and McIntyre will face each other next week to decide who that will be
  • Charlotte Flair def. Shotzi by submission …
  • … then has a microphone showdown with Rhea Ripley
  • Is all good in the Bloodline? Jey Uso says yes, but the battle with Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn is just beginning

Panthers restructure contract of S Xavier Woods

The Panthers announced they’ve restructured S Xavier Woods’ contract—their third of the offseason.

It’s a new deal, yes it is.

As announced on Thursday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers have restructured the contract of safety Xavier Woods.

According to Over the Cap, a simple restructure wouldn’t exactly line the Panthers’ pockets. But, hey, $1.64 million is better than nothing, right?

Woods will be entering the second campaign of a three-year pact he signed last spring. That agreement, which was made official on March 16, 2022, is set to pay out $15 million in total.

In his first season with Carolina, the 5-foot-11, 204-pound defensive back recorded 86 combined tackles—the second-highest single-season total of his career—along with six passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and a quarterback hit over 15 starts.

This latest adjustment is now the third restructure of the offseason for the Panthers. They’ve previously reworked the contracts of starting right guard Austin Corbett and starting right tackle Taylor Moton.

Between Corbett, Moton and Woods, the team has potentially freed up approximately $18.7 million of salary cap space.

Panthers S Xavier Woods teases call to David Tepper about Lamar Jackson

Panthers S Xavier Woods might want to put a good word in to David Tepper about Lamar Jackson.

Carolina Panthers safety Xavier Woods knows how good Lamar Jackson is. So can you blame him for wanting 2019’s (unanimous) Most Valuable Player on his team?

That’s why on Tuesday, not too long after the Baltimore Ravens officially placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on the superstar quarterback, Woods tweeted the following:

Woods and the Panthers got a close-up look at Jackson this past season, when they fell to the Ravens in their Week 11 matchup back on Nov. 10. In what would be one of his last starts of an injury-shortened campaign, Jackson completed 24 of his 33 throws for 209 yards and an interception while rushing for 31 yards and the game’s only touchdown.

But the safety’s call to owner David Tepper, if he even made one, probably fell on deaf ears. As reported by Joe Person of The Athletic, not even an hour after the news broke, Carolina is not expected to pursue Jackson—who can negotiate elsewhere given the parameters of the non-exclusive tag.

Panthers without Xavier Woods, Cory Littleton in Week 14 vs. Seahawks

The Panthers won’t have S Xavier Woods and LB Cory Littleton this afternoon against the Seahawks.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”sc1pjchNRq-2408883-7498″]

On Friday, Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks said he expected every player on Week 14’s final injury report, particularly those marked as “questionable,” to be a go against the Seattle Seahawks. Well, maybe we have to expect the unexpected.

Starting safety Xavier Woods and starting linebacker Cory Littleton, two of the four players in question, have been ruled inactive for this afternoon. Joining them on the sideline—as healthy scratches—will be offensive lineman Larnel Coleman, wide receiver Rashard Higgins and defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon.

Littleton missed the Week 12 victory over the Denver Broncos due to his ankle issue. Woods, who will be down for his second outing of the 2022 season, exited the same contest early on after sustaining a knee injury.

Here’s who will be inactive for Seattle:

  • CB Artie Burns
  • CB Justin Coleman
  • OT Jake Curhan
  • RB DeeJay Dallas
  • DE Shelby Harris
  • WR Penny Hart
  • RB Kenneth Walker III

The Carolina Panthers (at least on one side of the ball) gave a pretty good account of themselves in Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. But how do the analysts at Pro Football Focus feel about the showing?

Here are the best and worst grades from Week 11.

5 realistic Browns trade targets with Tuesday’s deadline approaching

The Browns might be in a position to acquire some young talent in need of a change of scenery. Here are five candidates who fit the bill.

The Cleveland Browns are more than likely going to be sellers as this year’s trade deadline approaches. However, they will never bat an eye at an opportunity to acquire young talent in need of a change of scenery either.

While it was draft day, general manager Andrew Berry made a move to go up and get Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. This Spring he sent shockwaves through the league, acquiring wide receiver Amari Cooper for just a fifth round pick. This also does not include the massive trade he made this past  Spring to upgrade at quarterback as well.

Berry has also been known to make low-risk trades as well. Swapping linebacker Mack Wilson for pass rusher Chase Winovich was a non-consequential move made, as was acquiring linebacker Deion Jones for a pick swap.

As the deadline approaches, the Browns will have the opportunity to both make non-consequential trades and acquire young talent. Here are five realistic trades the Browns could make to add talent to their roster.

Panthers’ Frankie Luvu, Xavier Woods out vs. 49ers in Week 5

The Panthers will be without both LB Frankie Luvu and S Xavier Woods today against the 49ers.

With Jeremy Chinn out for at least the next four weeks, the Carolina Panthers could really use the presence of fellow safety Xavier Woods at the moment. And, unfortunately, that won’t be the case.

Listed as questionable on Week 5’s final injury report, Woods is inactive for this afternoon’s contest against the San Francisco 49ers. Linebacker Frankie Luvu, who was also slapped with the questionable designation, is out as well.

Both Luvu and Woods have been quite busy for the unit this season. The duo currently leads Carolina in tackles—with 32 and 30, respectively.

Perhaps the most notable active player, as confirmed by head coach Matt Rhule on Friday, is receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. The second-year wideout has struggled to find a place in his sophomore season, having been in uniform for just half of the team’s outings thus far.

He’s recorded six offensive snaps and zero targets in 2022.

Here is who won’t be on the field for the Panthers on Sunday:

  • WR Rashard Higgins
  • LB Frankie Luvu
  • OL Cade Mays
  • WR Laviska Shenault Jr.
  • TE Stephen Sullivan
  • CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III
  • S Xavier Woods

The visiting 49ers will also be without a few key names:

  • DL Arik Armstead
  • RB Tyrion Davis-Price
  • DL Javon Kinlaw
  • TE Tyler Kroft
  • RB Marlon Mack
  • DB Tavarius Moore
  • OL Trent Williams
