Poeltl, the NBA version of Wordle, is here and it’s awesome

POELTL!

You’ve played Wordle (and continue to play Wordle). Maybe you’ve dabbled in Gordle (the NHL version), or Nerdle or Octordle or Worldle or … well, you get the idea.

But for NBA fans out, there, this one’s for you: Say hello to Poeltl!

Here’s how it works: You have eight guesses to nail a current NBA player based on their silhouette. You’re given their team, conference, division, position, height, age and jersey number. If you nail one of those, it’s a green square, but you’re also told if the player is taller/shorter, older/younger and so on.

I tried Friday’s and failed miserably. But it’s trending on Friday as fans have discovered it:

Someone put Wordle on Nintendo Game Boy

Greg brick’s now have Wordle.

As part of Wordle’s never-ending quest for world domination, one clever fan got the hit puzzle game running on Nintendo’s classic Game Boy.

Stack Smashing, a YouTuber passionate about technology, did the unthinkable when they got Wordle running on an original Game Boy. That’s right, the old grey brick that ate batteries up like nobody’s business can run The New York Time’s puzzler with ease. All that’s required is a functioning handheld gaming device that’s more than three decades old! Whom among us doesn’t have a few of those laying around in 2022? (Anyone born after 1998, that’s who.)

Take a look at Stack Smashing’s hilarious technical feat for yourself below.

If you’re ROM savvy at all, Stack Smashing includes download links for the Game Boy version of Wordle here. Yes, this isn’t a prank — the code with accompanying instructions is below. Keep in mind that the process isn’t easy if you’re not a computer science person.

Little technical fan projects like this are too much fun. It’s a safe bet that many of Wordle’s fanbase was big on the Game Boy back in the day. ForTheWin has several helpful write-ups for Wordle too, such as which versions are out there and a list of the most challenging words to solve thus far.

A complete guide to every version of Wordle you can play, from Nerdle to Quordle to Octordle (!)

A complete guide to every version of Wordle you can play, from Nerdle to Quordle to Octordle.

The Wordle explosion has reached a saturation point.

P-O-I-N-T. That can be a Wordle world. See? Even my brain is seeing the world in Wordle.

Anyway, what’s ended up happening is we’ve seen imitations and knockoffs and plays on the Wordle format, with everything from geography to hockey and college football names covered. So this is a guide to all the ones we could find and play — I happen to play about five of these a day, but there are now a bunch of versions that could keep you busy for a while.

Away we go, with a breakdown of each Wordle-like game:

Quordle is the hardcore version of Wordle that’s the most challenging thing ever

Yes, this exists.

The number of Wordle knockoffs has gotten bigger and bigger, even while the original version continues to be super popular despite players thinking it’s gotten harder since moving to the New York Times (it hasn’t!).

But what if you had to guess FOUR words in nine tries … AT THE SAME TIME?

That’s Quordle! And if you’ve been seeing “Quordle” or “Daily Quordle” popping up on Twitter a bunch in recent days, now you know the deal: Everyone playing it is finding it waaaay more challenging than Wordle (or Dordle, which is two words at once). Here’s some reaction from players:

Wordle players think the New York Times made the game harder, but here’s why they’re wrong

Nope.

If you’re like me — a hardcore Wordle player who also writes a lot about the word game — then you’ve noticed some of the words lately feel like they’ve been tougher.

They’ve involved some “U” words, and HUMOR took a while. I won’t say anything about Monday’s solution, but let’s say when “Wordle” is trending on Twitter, it’s usually a sign of the struggle.

But while it feels like the increase of word difficulty coincided with the game migrating over to the New York Times’ site after the paper acquired it, I’m here to debunk that.

Let me explain (and show you how a lot of people think this is a thing):

Here’s how to keep your Wordle streak intact now that the game has switched to the New York Times

There’s a fix for that!

If you’re reading this, DO NOT PANIC! YOUR WORDLE STREAK WILL STAY ALIVE!

But if you don’t know what I’m talking about: After the New York Times acquired the daily word game we all love (and love sharing about), the game ha moved to a Time’ website.

That has caused some grief as streaks and how many guesses it usually takes users has gotten reset. But the Times reported on Thursday it was aware of the problem.

Friday, there was a solution provided, and that’s what should hopefully make sure that your bragging rights are still intact.

Here’s the deal:

There you go. Happy Wordling and hopefully, you keep that streak going (speaking of which, Friday’s was SO HARD, RIGHT?).
