Kyrie Irving is using Kevin Durant as a leverage play with the Nets and that’s pretty brilliant

Kyrie Irving has all the leverage with the Nets even though it seems like he has none

What’s good, family. It’s your boy Sykes once again with another edition of Layup Lines. Let’s talk about the Brooklyn Nets — more specifically, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

Let’s be honest about this — if Irving wasn’t tied at the hip with Durant, there’s no way he’d be a Brooklyn Net at this point. He’s only played in 103 games in the last 3 seasons and has lost himself a lot of money between injury, his choice to remain unvaccinated and just plain being away from the team.

One ould argue that his part-time status upended the team’s chemistry when he returned — they were once the 1st overall seed in the East and barely finished at 7. Ultimately, they were swept in the postseason and looked like a team that didn’t know each other at all.

et, still. He feels like he can talk about “managing the Nets franchise” as one of the centerpieces on the team.

Irving can’t really walk away from the Nets — he won’t find a sweeter deal anywhere else. There aren’t many teams out there with cap space. The ones that do aren’t contenders.

The Nets want to give Irving a short-term, incentive-laden deal but Irving isn’t here for it. He’s looking for big cash and big guarantees, as any star player in the NBA would.

Normally, a player who has missed as much time as Irving has couldn’t play those cards. Yet he’s able to credibly hold his hand right now.

Why? Because Kevin Durant is his homie. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski laid it out for us in a recent report on ESPN+. If Irving leaves, there’s a chance KD might leave, too. And Brooklyn doesn’t want that.

“For everything owner Joe Tsai and general manager Sean Marks did to assemble one of the modern NBA’s most talented Big 3s, Irving’s impenetrable connection to Durant looms as a domino to the dismantling of the roster. Brooklyn is straddling the narrowest of walkways: Keeping conviction on Irving’s contract talks and keeping Durant’s desire to stay a Net.”

This is like when somebody threatens to take the ball home while playing pickup at the local court because they don’t like the rules everyone is playing by. It’s their ball, so they get to make the decisions.

Irving is Durant’s friend. It was partially because of him that Durant is even in Brooklyn. Without him, there is no Durant in Brooklyn. And if they shoo Irving away, there’s a chance they might shoo Durant away, too.

Durant is obviously his own man. He makes his own decisions. But if there’s a greater than 1% chance that Irving not being there makes Durant unhappy? Brooklyn will get a deal done. That’s just how these things work. It’s hard to get star-caliber players in the NBA. Losing one is OK — especially if you’ve got a Durant on the backend of things. But losing two? Nah, that’s unmanageable. Irving knows that and he’s operating accordingly.

If there’s one thing to take away from this whole scenario it’s that it’s always good to have friends in high places.

Let me take some notes.

The Tip-Off

Some NBA goodness from around the USA TODAY Sports network.

John Wall just got the sweetest revenge on the Houston Rockets.

They didn’t play him at all last year and it was one of the most embarrassing situations in the NBA. A perfectly healthy player just chilling. Getting paid $42 million to do nothing.

They might end up running that back. He reportedly opted in for his $47 million next year.

“So here’s where we ultimately are with this one. The Houston Rockets will have to either pay the man his money to sit on the bench, pay him some negotiated sum of money to find another team or just trade him to another team that will pay him that money to actually play.”

Good on Wall. The two sides are reportedly willing to negotiate a buyout here, but he’s getting paid regardless. That sounds like a sweet deal to me.

Sun (-10.5, -600) vs. Liberty (+420), O/U 162.5, 7 PM ET

The Connecticut Sun have really had the Liberty’s number in their last few matchups over the years. They’ve won 4 of 5  and they’ve all been by — at least — 17 points. The Liberty won a recent matchup in May this year, but Connecticut -10.5 feels like a good value here.

The 2022 NBA Draft is here and that means you need to be very, very careful on the internet

NBA draft rumors are spreading like wildfire but you don’t need to panic

Welcome to Layup Lines, our daily NBA newsletter where we’ll prep you for a tip-off of tonight’s action, from what to watch to bets to make. Subscribe here to get it delivered to your inbox every afternoon.

What’s good, family. It’s your boy Sykes here for another edition of Layup Lines. Let’s talk about the NBA draft for a second.

Yerboi is definitely anti-draft out here, but I can’t lie — this is still one of the most fun times of the year. It’s cool to see these kids dreams being actualized in just a major way. They go from high school and college phenoms to literal professional millionaires in a matter of seconds.

But with all that comes the big mess that is the NBA draft news cycle. And, whew buddy, is it ever messy this year.

There are so many rumors out there. For example, Jabari Smith is all of a sudden not a lock for the No. 1 overall pick. Oh, and Paolo Banchero doesn’t seem to like the Orlando Magic. And nobody knows what’s happening with Shaedon Sharpe. He might have a promise. He might also drop out of the top 7. We just don’t know.

That’s NBA draft season for you. There are lots of rumors swirling around. Some are undoubtedly true. Some are just smokescreens from teams looking to posture and make deals with other teams. It’s all just how the game works.

And in the middle of it all is, well, all of us.

There are thousands of rumors going around at this time within the league. Only, maybe, 2% of that actually is substantial enough to get reported out. That 2% is taken and regurgitated over and over and over again in our media cycle.

It’s all confusing. Some of it’s real but most of it isn’t and it’s really hard to discern what will actually go down when the time comes.

So here’s what you do: Sit down, crack open your beverage of choice and just let the rumors be what they are: Rumors. The only things that matter during these times are the things that actually happen.

Instead of just worrying about scuttlebutt from some random Eastern Conference scout that they heard from a trainer who heard it from the assistant GM of your favorite team, just read our latest mock from Bryan Kalbrosky.

That should get you to Thursday pretty safely.

The Golden State Warriors had SO much fun at their parade. The Steph Curry “night night” jokes, Klay Thompson stumbling everywhere, Draymond Green cussing folks out. Just classic Warriors stuff, man. You love to see it — unless, you know, you’re a Celtics fan.

Our Andy Nesbitt — who actually happens to be a Celtics fan — gathered up the best images from the parade. He perfectly captured the vibe of the parade with this piece.

“Draymond Green had a blast rubbing it in everyone else’s faces.

Steph Curry had fun with all of his trophies.

And Klay Thompson had himself a day that ended with him in a hot tub back in the team’s facility.

Klay rules, man.”

Just a good time, man.

Chicago Sky (+310) vs. Las Vegas Aces (-8.5, -410), O/U 175.5, 10 PM ET

Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

The Aces are far and away the best team in the WNBA so far this year. They’ve got, at least, 3 players in the running for MVP between A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young this year with Wilson slowly pulling away and they’re winners of four straight games.

You can never count Candace Parker’s Chicago Sky, though. And Kahleah Copper is coming off a dazzling performance against the Fever — albeit in a loss. For tonight, the Sky are at home and they’re still really good. Even if they don’t win, they won’t get blown out. I’m taking Chicago +8.5.

7 memorable Sue Bird moments to help you through the news of her upcoming retirement

We’re not crying, you are.

There has been much speculation over the past couple of years, in particular, over how much longer one of the WNBA’s GOAT’s Sue Bird would continue on with her playing career. But never any official announcement from the 41-year-old veteran. But on Thursday, that changed.

The four-time champion took to Twitter to officially announce that this 2022 WNBA season will be her final.

And though the message shouldn’t have come as a surprise, coming to grips with the fact that the game’s greatest players is just months away from hanging them up for good, is a bittersweet feeling.

There are so many memorable moments — far too many to include to shrink down into one post — but we’ll rewind time and take a look at some of the numerous highlights of Bird’s career.

Sue Bird is retiring after the 2022 WNBA season, and heartbroken fans are celebrating her career

The GOAT is calling it a career.

Sue Bird officially made it official: The GOAT is calling it a career. Thursday, the 41-year-old Seattle Storm star point guard announced on Twitter that the 2022 WNBA season will be her last.

The news of her impending retirement shouldn’t come as much of a shock to fans, but it doesn’t mean it stings and saddens them any less. She is, after all, one of the greatest players to ever hit the court.

Since becoming the Storm’s No. 1 overall WNBA Draft pick in 2002, Bird has had a stunning, record-breaking career filled with too many accolades and trophies to list entirely. She’s a four-time WNBA champ (2004, 2010, 2018, 2020), and she’s the league’s all-time assists leader — a mark she broke back in 2017. She’s also a 12-time WNBA All-Star, and she’ll likely get to No. 13 this season.

Outside of the W, Bird is also a five-time Olympic gold medalist, winning in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and, most recently, in 2021 postponed Tokyo Games last summer, along with being a four-time FIBA world champion (2002, 2010, 2014, 2018).

Anyone who’s been able to witness Bird play, in person or on TV, knows how special of a player she is and how vast her contributions to the game have been. So after she announced this will be her last season, fans began celebrating her illustrious career while still mourning the end of an era.

Now, fans can hope she’ll end up in a broadcast booth, preferably with Diana Taurasi some day.

W Bets: Take Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty as home underdogs vs. the Washington Mystics

Sabrina Ionescu’s star turn has New York on the rise.

The New York Liberty and Washington Mystics play against one another on Thursday night as the only game on the WNBA’s calendar. Per Tipico Sportsbook, the Liberty are 4.5-point dogs, which feels wrong to me.

But I get it, the Mystics are a really good basketball team. Their 10-6 record is good for fifth in the W so far, and the returns on Mike Thibault’s team have been great after an injury-plagued 2021 season. Yet, they’ve lost three of their last six games, including a 74-70 loss to the Liberty — a game in which Elena Delle Donne did play in.

But now EDD is listed as out for Thursday’s contest with New York as she receives a rest day to help keep her body fresh. That unavailability makes New York covering the spread an enticing bet. New York on the moneyline (+165) is even plausible when you consider how well the Liberty have played recently after beginning the season 1-7.

Since the wildly underwhelming start, the Liberty have gone 4-2, and is a Courtney Vandersloot game-winning 3-pointer away from being 5-1.

New York’s resurgence has had very much to do with Sabrina Ionescu turning it up several notches. In this month alone (six games) she’s averaging 24.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3.2 threes per game. Additionally, she’s had a few historic performances along the way.

Natasha Howard is also playing some of her best basketball of the season, as are Stef Dolson and Han Xu.

Even without Delle Donne in the lineup, it will be a challenge for the Liberty to beat a touch, veteran, well-coached Mystics squad. But I like their chances, given their recent momentum and the fact that they get to play this game at home.

My money is on New York.

Halfway through the month of July, hardly anything is set in stone in the WNBA. From the Las Vegas Aces down to the Indiana Fever, teams are battling injuries and tinkering with their depth a bit in order to find what can hold them over. It has led to increased roles for a number of players. Here are a few that fantasy WNBA managers might want to consider adding to their rosters this week.

State Department officials met Monday …

State Department officials met Monday with representatives of Brittney Griner’s WNBA team about the Phoenix Mercury star’s monthslong detention in Russia and the Biden administration’s efforts to secure her release. The State Department confirmed the meeting, which involved officials from its specialized office that advocates for hostages and wrongfully detained Americans, but offered no additional details about what was said or who specifically attended.

Social media reacts to Sabrina Ionescu’s WNBA history-making triple double

The legend of Sabrina Ionescu is growing in the WNBA. She was celebrated once again on Sunday after making more history as a pro.

The legend of Sabrina Ionescu is starting to grow in the WNBA ranks.

On Sunday afternoon, the Oregon Ducks legend made history by becoming the youngest player in WNBA history to record multiple triple-doubles, and doing so in the shortest amount of time, with the feat accomplished before the third quarter of the New York Liberty’s game against the Chicago Sky came to an end.

Ionescu finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists on 9-for-16 shooting, 3-for-6 from 3FG, and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

This performance comes on the heels of another classic from Ionescu last week where she dropped 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists on a historic 10-for-11 shooting. She is the only player in WNBA history to record 25 or more points, eight or more assists, and eight or more rebounds in a game while shooting 90% or better from the field. And again, she reached those numbers during the third quarter.

On Sunday afternoon, the sporting world once again celebrated Ionescu on social media, marveling at her performance. Here are some of the best things we saw on Twitter:
