Woj: Ex-Boston Celtics assistant Jerome Allen to interview with Utah Jazz for open head coaching role

Now with the Detroit Pistons, Allen joins three other Boston alumni in the search to replace Quin Snyder.

The depth of the Boston Celtics alumni pool in the thick of the interview process to be the next head coach of the Utah Jazz just got longer according to recent reporting from ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. Woj reports that former Boston assistant coach and current Detroit Pistons assistant Jerome Allen will be permitted by his current team to interview for the job recently vacated by 2021-22 Jazz head coach Quin Snyder.

Allen joins current Celtics assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla and onetime Boston shooting guard (and current G League coach for the Rapid City Gold) Jason Terry are also among Boston alumni who could well end up at the helm of the Jazz next season.

That the front office is under the guidance of former Boston President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge as the team seeks to shake things up significantly after stalling out as a not-quite contending team in recent seasons is likely part of the reason for such a notable Celtics connection to Utah’s hiring process.

But all of the alumni currently under consideration have enviable resumes documenting excellent bodies of respective work, and any of the foursome with ties to Boston would make a solid hire to lead Utah moving forward.

Celtics alum Jason Terry receives permission to interview for Utah Jazz head coach

The JET joins Boston assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla as candidates to replace Quin Snyder.

It seems that it is not just current Boston Celtics assistant coaches in the mix to be the next head coach of the Utah Jazz now that current head coach Quin Snyder plans to step down from that role, but now also includes at least one notable Celtics alumnus.

After news broke that Boston assistants Will Hardy and Joe Mazzulla were potential targets for the Jazz to replace Snyder broke, we are now hearing reports from The Athletic’s Shams Charania that Jason Terry is now a candidate as well. Charania reports that the Grand Rapids Gold coach has been permitted by the Denver Nuggets G League affiliate to interview with Utah for the open head coaching position.

Terry signed with the Celtics in the final season of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce’s tenure with the Celtics and was traded by Boston along with Pierce and Garnett to the Brooklyn Nets in the 2013 offseason.

Terry remains ties to the Celtics organization to this day, which he spoke about at length in a recent interview with the Celtics Lab podcast.

Woj: Celtics assistant coach Joe Mazzulla also in the mix for Jazz head coaching gig

Will Hardy is not the only assistant under head coach Ime Udoka to be getting interest from the Jazz as their next potential head coach.

It seems that it is not just Boston Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy who is in the mix for a potential shot at becoming the next head coach of the Utah Jazz following news of longtime Jazz head coach Quinn Snyder’s decision to step down from helming that particular Western Conference franchise.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski recently reported that Celtics assistant coach Joe Mazzulla is another name up for consideration for the Jazz head coaching gig and that permission to talk to Mazzulla about the job has been granted. Mazzulla joins Johnnie Bryant of the New York Knicks, Charles Lee of the Milwaukee Bucks, Jazz assistant Alex Jensen, Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, and of course fellow Celtics assistant Hardy.

“The list will grow longer with assistants and former head coaches,” wrote Wojnarowski, who tells us to “expect a lengthy, wide-open process” from former Boston team president Danny Ainge and the rest of the Jazz front office.

Jazz receive permission to interview several assistant coaches

Adrian Wojnarowski: ESPN Sources: The Jazz received permission to interview several assistant coaches for head job, including Johnnie Bryant (Knicks), Will Hardy (Celtics), Charles Lee (Bucks), and Joe Mazzulla (Celtics). Jazz assistant Alex Jensen and Terry Stotts will interview too.

Report: Celtics’ Will Hardy among targets to replace Utah Jazz’ Quinn Snyder as head coach

Boston’s success in the coaching department has not gone unnoticed.

The Boston Celtics have surprised the NBA world with the strength of their 2021-22 midseason turnaround under first-year head coach Ime Udoka, going from a team trapped on the proverbial treadmill of mediocrity to a berth in the 2022 NBA Finals, and it seems other teams are already looking to steal away some of the staff Udoka assembled to potentially fuel their own designs on contention.

According to recent reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Tony Jones, Celtics assistant coach Will Hardy is among a number of targets to replace outgoing Utah Jazz head coach Quinn Snyder, who recently announced he would be stepping down from his current position.

Hardy reportedly joins New York Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant, Jazz assistant Alex Jensen, onetime Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin, Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee, and Phoenix Suns assistant Kevin Young.

With Quin Snyder stepping down, Terry Stotts would be an obvious name to look at. But I think the Jazz take their time and conduct a thorough search. I also think they will be open to considering assistants – 6:09 PM

As for candidates for the sixth head coach in team history… my informed speculation might point to Terry Stotts, among others. – 5:39 PM

Adrian Wojnarowski: After eight seasons as coach, Snyder simply decided that it’s time to step away. Conversations had been amicable with team, relationships still strong, but Snyder has decided to leave after building the Jazz into a perennial playoff contender. -via Twitter @wojespn / June 5, 2022
