Western Michigan vs Northern Illinois Game Preview

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Really, how much does Northern Illinois care about this?

It has bigger fish to fry with whatever comes out of the East in the MAC Championship next week, and Western Michigan is looking to score a stronger bowl slot in the MAC pecking order.

The Broncos have been a massive disappointment – they’re the ones who were supposed to be going to Detroit next week – and lost three of their last four games to biff the shot.

However, the offense has been great – it cranked up close to 1,500 yards over the last three games and the defense is fantastic on third downs helped by a great pass rush.

Northern Illinois doesn’t generate a whole lot of pressure, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The offense has gone ballistic, averaging well over 500 yards per game over a four game stretch.

The passing attack rolled against Kent State – the one loss since dropping the date against Michigan in mid-September – and the ground attack just rumbled over Buffalo for over 300 yards.

What’s Western Michigan’s issue? It seems to change every week, but it’s been wildly inconsistent overall.

No, Northern Illinois doesn’t need this game, but …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Senior Night. It’s a chance to make some noise on national TV, and it still needs to keep working considering the run defense has to be a whole lo better and the team has played with fire a bit too often.

The last seven games have been decided by a touchdown or less, and the Huskies have shown the strength to come through in six of them.

But there’s going to be a letdown.

The Western Michigan running attack will take over in the fourth quarter to control the clock better than the Huskies will.

Again, Northern Illinois has bigger things to prepare for.

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

The Huskies know how to control a game.

They aren’t running it as well as they need to do a better job of hanging on to the ball, but they grind down games to a pause. The passing game got going against Ball State, and the defense is doing a decent job on third downs, but they’re going to need to catch a few breaks.

Western Michigan doesn’t force takeaways and it commits way too many penalties. If the Broncos aren’t sharp – like they weren’t last year in the stunning 17-14 loss to NIU – it’ll be close. However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Northern Illinois is having huge problem on the lines. The offensive front isn’t doing anything for the running game, and the defense is getting hit hard on the ground, giving up close to 206 yards per game.

Western Michigan’s passing attack has been terrific so far – it’s No. 1 in the nation in efficiency with one interception, almost 14 yards per throw, and averaging 310 yards per game.

NIU doesn’t have a pass rush to be a problem, and WMU can run as much as it wants to against the porous defensive front.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Western Michigan can move the offense however it wants to. Throw in the grouchy factor after last year’s killer loss in DeKalb, and this will be an easy run for the Broncos.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s this simple for Western Michigan. Win, and go play Miami University for the MAC Championship. Lose, and get the Toledo pompoms out to cheer for a win over Central Michigan.

The Broncos are on a nice-three-game winning streak after losing a clunker to Eastern Michigan, and now they get a Northern Illinois team that didn’t show up last week in its big game against those same Eagles.

NIU stunned Toledo on the road to put a shot of bowl eligibility in play, and then it came back home – needing to win its two final games, and … 45-17 Eastern Michigan.

The Western Michigan offense is the best in the MAC. It’s explosive, it doesn’t make mistakes, and it’s fantastic at moving the chains and taking control of games.

Northern Illinois is none of those things, except for controlling the clock. It’s not going to be able to do that well enough to push past a motivated Bronco team that will come out firing.

NIU will be -2 in turnover margin. too many drives will stall, and WMU will take the West.

Western Michigan at Northern Illinois odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Western Michigan Broncos at Northern Illinois Huskies college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Western Michigan Broncos (7-4, 5-2 Mid-American Conference West) will battle the Northern Illinois Huskies (4-7, 3-4) Tuesday night at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Ill. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Western Michigan-Northern Illinois odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Western Michigan at Northern Illinois: Three things you need to know

1. Western Michigan is tied atop the MAC West with Central Michigan. A victory Tuesday will clinch a spot in the conference championship game thanks to a 31-15 win against CMU back on Sept. 28.

2. Northern Illinois cannot become eligible for the postseason even with an upset win, so it will have to serve as its bowl game. Expect NIU to bring a lot of fight in its swan song for the 2019 season.

3. The Broncos have struggled over the years against the number against the Huskies, going just 5-16-1 ATS in the past 22 meetings, and 2-9 ATS in the past 11 trips to DeKalb.

Prediction

Western Michigan 35, Northern Illinois 30

Moneyline (ML)

The moneyline for Western Michigan (-295) isn’t worth playing, as it is too expensive, and Northern Illinois (+230) is too risky of a play.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Roll with NORTHERN ILLINOIS (+7.5, –115) catching seven and the hook. While the Huskies really have nothing to play for but pride, they’ll give the Broncos all they can handle. They always do.

Western Michigan (-7.5, -106) has managed a dismal 1-4 SU/ATS mark in five road games this season, and they needed overtime last time out at Ohio Nov. 12 to pick up that only win and cover, 37-34.

New to sports betting? Every $1.15 wagered that Northern Illinois will win or not lose by 8 or points will profit $1.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER (51.5, –110) is the play, as Western Michigan’s offense is on fire. It’s 16th in the nation with 467.2 total yards per game, and 21st in rushing yards per game (217.2). It’s also 16th in the country with 36.0 points per game, while ranking a dismal 93rd in total yards allowed (429.5), 83rd in passing yards allowed (240.4) and 94th in rushing yards allowed (189.2).

NIU is just so-so on offense, and it offers just mild resistance defensively. The Over looks good for this mid-week MACtion.
