Detroit Lions are placing Trey Flowers on short-term IR

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia announced that the team is placing EDGE Trey Flowers on short-term injured reserve.

At his Monday afternoon press conference, Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia announced that the team is placing EDGE Trey Flowers on short-term injured reserve, meaning the soonest he can re-join the team will be in Week 12.

As noted in this week’s snap count review, Flowers looked like he had potentially injured his right hand/arm/shoulder area and it was the likely catalyst in him having a lower than normal amount of snaps against the Colts.

Flowers had been dealing with a previous wrist injury the week prior, but Patricia confirmed today that it was a new injury that happened in yesterday’s game.

Now the Lions have three of their five EDGE players out with injuries: Flowers is joining Julian Okwara on IR — who can return after Week 9 — and Austin Bryant is still on the PUP list, but eligible to return at any time.

And now the move to trade for Everson Griffen, which was originally viewed as a luxury addition, suddenly looks like a critical decision. He has still not officially joined the team, as he is moving through the onboarding process, but when he does — which happen as early as today — he should jump right into a pivotal role.

When the Lions enter Week 9, it will be with Romeo Okwara in line to start, Griffen headed for a heavy rotational role, and if either of those two get injured they would have to lean on linebackers to fill the void.

One positive note, when Griffen does return, the placing of Flowers on injured reserve will create an opening on the 53-man roster, and Griffen can move onto the roster without another move needing to be made.

Seahawks running backs still banged up heading into Week 9

Seattle Seahawks Seahawks running backs Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and Travis Homer are still banged up heading into Week 9 against the Bills.

The Seattle Seahawks were quite thin at running back Sunday but still found a way to eke out a win against the San Francisco 49ers. Starter Chris Carson (foot) and Carlos Hyde (hamstring) were both inactive and remain uncertain for Week 9 in Buffalo.

“Chris has got a sore foot,” coach Pete Carroll said Monday morning on 710 ESPN Seattle. “He’s got something going on in his foot that he’s got to get through. He feels a lot better today already. We just won’t know. We can’t tell.”

As for Hyde, the hamstring injury could very well sideline him for another week as well.

“Hamstrings usually take 10 days or something like that anyway, so we’ll see,” Carroll explained. “We won’t know until late in the week. If he overcame it late the last day or so, maybe something could have happened for the last game. It’s going to be the same way.”

Travis Homer, who ended up playing a couple of snaps against San Francisco with a knee bruise, should be back in action this Sunday.

“The fact that he made it out there – and he might be a little more sore today – he made it out there and played, so he should be ready to give us some firepower,” Carroll said.

Jets injury report: Sam Darnold to get MRI on his shoulder

The Jets could be without their starting quarterback for the third time this season.

Sam Darnold woke up “a little sore” Monday morning, but Adam Gase doesn’t think it should affect his status for the Jets’ Week 9 game against the Patriots on Monday night. But, as a precaution, Gase said Darnold will undergo an MRI on the same shoulder he injured earlier this season and get a second opinion before the Jets decide if he can play.

“We need him out there,” Gase told reporters Monday, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “He gives us the best chance to win on Sunday.”

If Darnold can’t go, Joe Flacco will likely earn his third start of the season in relief.

Center Connor McGovern (knee) and Quinnen Williams (hamstring) both popped up with new injuries this week. Gase said both could miss practice time this week but he doesn’t know their status for Monday, yet.

Receiver Breshad Perriman is progressing toward a return but is still in the concussion protocol. Jamison Crowder (groin) will continue to be monitored as the week continues.

Florida sneaks back into top 10 of USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rank

Florida’s football team re-entered the top 10 of USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rankings after tumbling due to a loss at Texas A&M and COVID-19

Michigan falls way, way out of the Top 25 after losing to rival Michigan State and Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State remain at the head of the pack in the latest USA TODAY Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-127.

Ranked eighth heading into the weekend, the Wolverines are down to No. 50 after losing 27-24 to the Spartans, who were coming off a loss to Rutgers.

Michigan was not the only team to fall down or completely out of the Top 25. Previously the best hope for the Big 12 in terms reaching the College Football Playoff, No. 15 Oklahoma State is down nine after losing to Texas. North Carolina falls to No. 24 after losing 44-41 to Virginia. And No. 26 Kansas State was docked 12 spots after getting blown out by West Virginia.

The Tigers, Crimson Tide and Buckeyes are the clear class of the Bowl Subdivision. While Clemson struggled with Boston College and Alabama made a case for leapfrogging to the top of the 1-127 by demolishing woeful Mississippi State, the Tigers stick at No. 1 leading into a crucial ACC matchup Saturday against No. 4 Notre Dame.

Notre Dame leads a slight shakeup after the top three. Georgia is down two spots to No. 6 after another struggle on offense in beating Kentucky 14-3. The Bulldogs were passed by the Irish and No. 5 Cincinnati, which beat Memphis 49-10.

Panthers DT Zach Kerr shares his philosophy: ‘Nobody cares, work harder’

Panthers defensive tackle Zach Kerr has become one of the team’s top under-the-radar free agent pickups in 2020.

Panthers defensive tackle Zach Kerr has become one of the team’s top under-the-radar free agent pickups in 2020. Kerr did not play Thursday night against the Falcons due to a toe injury. That said, when he’s been on the field Kerr has performed well, a welcome development especially after another season-ending shoulder injury for star DT Kawann Short.

Kerr has only played 39% of the team’s defensive snaps so far, but he has four quarterback hits and a pass breakup already. This morning, Kerr shared some profound thoughts on Twitter about his process and philosophy. His working mantra seems to be “nobody cares, work harder.”

It may not be a football reference. However, it’s the right frame of mind to have for Kerr and the Panthers going into Week 9. The team has opened as a 12-point underdog against the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs. Hopefully Kerr will be back in the lineup.

Gators gain some ground in Amway Coaches Poll for Week 9

Starting the week ranked No. 9, an Oklahoma State loss to Texas opened up a spot in the top 10 for the Gators to move up to No. 8.

The Florida Gators seemingly struggled at first against the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, but once the muscle memory started to click, UF cruised to a resounding 41-17 victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium Halloween night.

While Florida has bobbed up and down in the polls during its two-week layoff, its third victory in four games this year gave the team a boost in the latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports for Week 9. Starting the week ranked No. 9, an Oklahoma State Cowboys loss — previously ranked at No. 6 — to the Texas Longhorns opened up a spot in the top 10 for the Gators to move up to eighth in the nation entering November.

The Clemson Tigers retained the top spot, continuing its wire-to-wire dominance over the poll, while the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs round out the top five, respectively. The Texas A&M Aggies placed seventh in the rankings, giving the Southeastern Conference a total of four teams in the top 10.
