Fantasy football IDP free-agent report: Week 17

Check your waiver wire for these IDP options ahead of Week 17.

Two weeks left in the season, and whether you’re in the fantasy playoffs or a season-long grind, there are important decisions to make on the defensive side of the ball.

Each week, we’ll highlight diamonds in the rough or some players that just need to be rostered in more leagues on the defensive side of the ball. Keep in mind your scoring system and roster restraints when heading to the waiver wire to grab these IDPs.

Defensive linemen

DE Malcolm Koonce, Las Vegas Raiders

DE Maxx Crosby is drawing all the attention on the other side, and he hasn’t had a sack in the last two games. Koonce has five! He had two forced fumbles two weeks ago and six tackles last week. He faces the Indianapolis Colts this week, who have allowed the sixth-most points to the position the last five weeks. Put him atop your wish list.

DT Christian Barmore, New England Patriots

The 315-pound tackle has been feasting on quarterbacks the last two weeks. He has 12 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble combined in the last two games. He has a “meh” matchup against the Buffalo Bills this week, but it’s hard to ignore what he has done of late.

Linebackers

LB Shaquille Leonard, Philadelphia Eagles

He may have been picked up and stashed when he signed with the Eagles, but it took a few weeks for him to get acclimated. He showed he still has some fantasy prowess left in the tank with seven tackles and a sack in Week 16. He has a midrange matchup against the Arizona Cardinals this week and is at least a flex candidate.

LB Duke Riley, Miami Dolphins

Riley has been steady at the position the last four weeks. He broke out with eight tackles in Week 13 and has delivered five tackles in three straight games. He sprinkled in a half-sack and a pass defense, but you’re not looking for elite counting numbers here. He provides a high floor, though.

LB Myles Jack, Pittsburgh Steelers

He went back to the practice squad after a solid Week 16 game, so this may be a fringe candidate. However, he delivered six tackles and a sack in his first action of 2023. The Seattle Seahawks are the toughest matchup against LBs in Week 17, but he’s a good depth piece if you’re still playing come Week 18.

Defensive backs

SS D’Anthony Bell, Cleveland Browns

Bell has settled in as the starter and produced the last three weeks. In Week 16, he had six tackles, a forced fumble, and two pass defenses. Bell had five tackles and an INT in Week 15. So the production continues to increase, and he has a midrange matchup against the New York Jets.

CB Desmond King, Houston Texans

After 11 tackles in Week 16, King has at least 10 tackles in three of the last four weeks. He had a one-tackle game in there, too, and those are the ebbs and flows you deal with when using corners. He’ll have a midrange matchup against the Tennessee Titans this week.

S Jartavius Martin, Washington Commanders

Martin had his worst game in Week 16 over the last three weeks. He secured only six tackles. That shows how good he was in the two previous games with 10 tackles and a sack and seven tackles. There’s a midrange matchup against the San Francisco 49ers for him this week to build on his binge.

Fantasy football waiver wire targets

Priority free agents

1) RB Derrick Gore, Kansas City Chiefs: The shoulder/collarbone injury suffered by Clyde Edwards-Helaire in Week 16 could cost him time. If so, Gore will see a large role in the backfield split with Darrel Williams. The latter is universally owned, which makes Gore a natural pivot if you’ve made it to the championship week with a decimated backfield. He posted games of 16.9 and 13.4 PPR points, respectively, in Weeks 14 and 16. The Chiefs didn’t send a play his direction in Week 15. Sunday, Gore rushed 12 times and caught all three targets, generating 104 yards of offense vs. Pittsburgh. In the three contests in which he has touched the ball at least 10 times, Gore has managed to get into double-digit PPR land. In Week 17, KC heads to Cincy, which is a neutral matchup for RBs on the year and offers a hint of upside for a cheap TD. The regular-season finale has the Denver Broncos hosting the Chiefs, but that one is a decidedly poor matchup for the 27-year-old.

2) RB Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles: Running back Miles Sanders suffered a fractured hand bone in in Week 16 and left the stadium in a soft cast. Monday we learned he will not play at Washington in Week 17. RB Jordan Howard left in Week 16 with a stinger. He’s day to day.  Rookie back Kenneth Gainwell has fallen out of favor, seeing only a pair of targets in the past two weeks. That leave’s the versatile Scott to see the primary share of touches. Dallas closes out the year for the Eagles, and while it’s hardly a running back-friendly opponent, there’s hope for some aerial returns in that one.

3) RB Dare Ogunbowale, Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars lost running back James Robinson for the remainder of the year after he partially tore his left Achilles tendon Sunday. Ogunbowale rushed 17 times for 57 yards and a score vs. the New York Jets last weekend, and he snared half of his four targets for 15 yards. He’ll be the next man up without Robinson and Carlos Hyde. Jacksonville heads to New England this week, and while the Patriots have given up a few big games to the position, O-Gun is just a shot in the dark for a TD plunge. New England has allowed enough work to backs through the air to consider him a low-end play in PPR. The Jaguars face Indianapolis in Week 18 for gamers who’ll play out the remainder of the season.

One-week plays

WR Isaiah McKenzie, Buffalo Bills vs. Atlanta Falcons: With Gabriel Davis and Cole Beasley on the COVID-19 list, McKenzie erupted vs. the New England Patriots in Week 16 to the tune of 11-125-1 on 12 targets. We know the Bills love throwing to the slot, and McKenzie can play both inside and out. We also know Davis will miss Week 17, but Beasley has a chance to return based on the timing of his positive test results. Even if he does, McKenzie’s flexibility and big-play nature will put him on the radar vs. a Falcons team that has given up 208 grabs to WRs in 2021, which is the sixth most. Toss in a defense that has surrendered 18 TDs to the position in 15 games, coupled with the constant doubles sent toward Stefon Diggs, and McKenzie has a legit chance of standing out once again.

FAAB: $14-15

TE Albert Okwuegbunam, Denver Broncos at Los Angeles Chargers: A deep-league flier, Albert O is a low-volume TD gamble in Week 17. The Broncos face a Chargers defense tight ends have had their way with in 2021. In 15 games, LA has allowed a dozen touchdowns to the position at a rate of once every 6.67 catches, and no team has been worse in that regard. The Chargers have allowed only 11 fewer yards than Indy for the most in the league. Okwuegbunam’s odds improve if Teddy Bridgewater returns from a concussion, and something in the area of 5-40-1 would be his ceiling.

PK Randy Bullock, Tennessee Titans vs. Miami Dolphins: The veteran has attempted seven field goals in the last three weeks, making six with two in each of those games. He hasn’t exactly been a wealth of fantasy points this year, so there’s considerable risk here. Entering Monday Night Football vs. the New Orleans Saints, Miami has allowed the eighth-most field goal tries in 2021, and from Weeks 11-15, the Dolphins yielded two-plus attempts in three of the five games. The two sides match up well with Tennessee’s offense showing signs of life last week as Miami’s defense has stiffened in the last two months after giving up ridiculous numbers to the position in the first half of the season.

Philadelphia Eagles D/ST at Washington Football Team: COVID-19 can flip the script in a hurry, and Washington has had its share of issues with it in recent weeks. A bigger issue has been quarterback play, especially Taylor Heinicke’s regression the last two games. He was absent vs. Philly in Week 15 but posted just 18 completions on 47 attempts (38.3 percent) vs. Dallas in consecutive appearances,. In those outings, he threw three picks vs. two TDs and amassed a measly 245 total passing yards. While Heinicke is not a lock to start, backup Kyle Allen isn’t a much better option. The Eagles have registered at least two sacks in three straight, averaging a takeaway per game in that time. This is a poor week for defensive matchups, and Philly is widely owned, but it doesn’t hurt to take a peek.

Fantasy football IDP free-agent report: Week 17

It’s time to find those IDP gems on the fantasy football waiver wire in Week 17.

It’s the season finale, and for you full-season leaguers, it’s time to finish strong. Look for these possible gems on the waiver wire to bring home the hardware.

Defensive linemen

DE Montez Sweat, Washington Football Team

Sweat has been fairly steady this year opposite of No. 2 overall pick Chase Young. Sweat has 40 tackles and eight sacks on the year. He has just two sacks in the last five games, which has caused him to be available in 80 percent of leagues polled. He’ll face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17, which has been one of the best matchups for linemen all season.

DT Jarran Reed, Seattle Seahawks

The San Francisco 49ers have been the most-generous matchup for linemen the last five weeks, and Reed will be able to feast. He had two sacks last week, and he has three in as many weeks. He’d be worth consideration on his own merits, but the matchup puts him over the top.

Linebackers

ILB Jarrad Davis, Detroit Lions

Starter Jamie Collins (neck) was forced to miss his first game of the year with a neck injury last week. There’s no indication of his status this week, but one would think that he’d be on the bad side of questionable. Davis filled in with nine total tackles last week. He’s a former first-round pick likely playing his final game with the club. If Collins is out again, Davis could be a top performer at the position against the Minnesota Vikings

[lawrence-related id=456803]

ILB Joe Thomas, Dallas Cowboys

This situation is a boom-or-bust option. Leighton Vander Esch (ankle) is banged up, and he has been all year. His possible absence would give Thomas an opportunity to rack up some tackles. He did so in Vander Esch’s stead earlier this year. Pick him up as depth with the potential to start if Vander Esch is out.

Defensive backs

FS Darnell Savage, Green Bay Packers

Over the last three games, Savage has been one of the better performers among defensive backs. He has 19 tackles, a sack, an interception and four passes defensed during the stretch. The Chicago Bears are a good matchup in Week 17, because they throw to the backs a lot and have yielded a ton of tackles in that second and third level.

SS Duron Harmon, Detroit Lions

The 29-year-old is at a crossroads of his NFL career and will be a free agent in the offseason. He has turned it up a notch the last two games with 15 total tackles. He’ll face the Minnesota Vikings, which hand out tackles to DBs like candy with their midrange attack. Harmon looks to finish strong in a good matchup to possibly wrap up his short Detroit stint.
