Why Michigan State Will Win

The Michigan State passing game should be able to make this a bit of a battle.

It won’t crank up 400 yards or anything, but it’s going push the ball down the field a bit, it’ll keep the chains moving, and it should be able to go for well over 250 yards. Penn State was able to hold up against the Maryland passing game, but it hasn’t dealt with a slew of efficient attacks.

This is Michigan State’s shot at going to a bowl game. It’s going to turn it all loose.

Why Penn State Will Win

Here comes the Penn State running game.

It has a possible New Year’s Six bowl game on the line – the only losses were to Michigan and Ohio State – and it’s about to showcase the rotation of running backs against a Michigan State defensive front that got hammered by Indiana for 257 rushing yards and four scores.

It was the third dime in the last four games and the fourth time in the last six that Michigan State gave up over 220 rushing yards. Penn State isn’t going to get too crazy here, and it’s not going to press with the passing attack.

Keep things simple, wait for the offensive line to take over, dominate the time of possession battle against a team that keeps the ball for just over 26 minutes a game, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s still amazing how Michigan State gave away the Indiana game. It’ll come out hot and might even lead after the first quarter.

And then the Michigan State run defense will give it all away.

The Spartans are 0-4 when allowing 225 yards or more, and Penn State should be able to get there for the fourth time this season.

The Nittany Lions are 8-0 when it runs for more than 111 yards. Washington – who threw for almost 400 yards in the win – and Akron are the only two teams that didn’t come up with at least 140 on the MSU D.

Start throwing, keep throwing, make Houston stop it.

The Cougar defense came up with a shocking performance in the 42-3 win over East Carolina last week, but for the most part the pass defense is getting thrown on at will.

Between the nine touchdown passes allowed against SMU, to the 486 yards given up in the win over Temple, to team after team hitting the midrange passes, the D will give up 300 passing yards to anyone who can throw.

Tulsa hasn’t always been sharp, but it will hit enough big plays to keep pushing the Cougar secondary.

Why Houston Will Win

Start running, keep running, make Tulsa stop it.

The Golden Hurricane defense gives up yards in chunks, but it hasn’t been awful against the more mediocre offenses. Houston’s offense can do just about anything.

It might not be consistent, but it ripped off huge runs in the SMU and Temple games and should be using for five yards per carry in this. That, and the passing game that’s connecting on close to 70% of its passes should work, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams will make this a show of fireworks.

Tulsa has just enough firepower to be in the game deep into the second half, but Houston’s offense will take over late. The balance will will be enough to own the final ten minutes.

Northwestern hasn’t been able to figure out that whole scoring thing as the season has gone on.

The offense will move the ball a bit, but turnovers are a massive problem – two or more in eight games and six in the last two – and it’s having an impossible time putting the biscuit in the basket.

Northwestern lost to Maryland 31-24. That was the only time in the last eight games it scores more than 14 points, and now it’s going against the No. 2 defense in college football that allows 259 points and 13 points per game.

Why Northwestern Will Win

Can Northwestern throw a bit?

It couldn’t do it against Ohio State or Purdue, but the defense was able to keep the score in check – the weather conditions had everything to do with that against the Buckeyes – but the passing game has occasionally been okay enough to be at least accurate.

That’s how you bother the Illinois defense – you have to throw against it. Michigan State, Purdue, and Michigan were all able to run in their wins against Illinois, but that was set up by being decent enough through the air to be a bother.

The Wildcats have to mix up the offense a little bit and the run defense has go one up with a special day.

There’s no shot without holding the Illini to under 160 rushing yards, but …

UAB has had a rough season with a disastrous second half run going 1-5, but all can be fine with one more win and bowl eligibility.

It’ll get it against a Louisiana Tech team that’s not able to come up with enough consistency on defense and is struggling to get the O going.

The Bulldogs do okay when they take the ball away a bunch of times – they’re 3-1 when coming up with three turnovers or more – but UAB has only given it up multiple times once in the last seven games.

Here’s the concern, though – UAB isn’t at home.

The offense should get its groove back.

Nothing worked in the strange 42-3 loss to Houston last week, but that was one of the weirder blowouts. The offense wasn’t horrible, but the passing game couldn’t keep things moving, the defense wasn’t even close, and it turned into a disaster.

Normally the offense is far more efficient, there hasn’t been any problem with turnovers – none in the last five games – or penalties, and now it gets to deal with a Temple defense that’s not awful, but it doesn’t do enough to overcome the mediocre offense.

Why Temple Will Win

The defense is able to come up with plenty of third down stops.

The East Carolina offense stalls a bit too much at odd times. Again, it should be better than it was last week, but it has to overcome a defense that gives up way too many yards through the air and is too rocky on third downs.

Temple has been able to stay in most games lately, but it needs the passing game to keep on moving. Freshman QB EJ Warner struggled in the 23-3 loss to Cincinnati, but before that he was a yardage machine to build around.

He’ll be back to form in this – he’ll push for close to 300 yards.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Temple turn all the yards into points? That’s been a problem, and it’ll be costly again here – it doesn’t do enough to close out drives.

East Carolina won’t have a smooth ride, but it’ll be consistent and balanced for a full four quarters. The defense will hold on in the third quarter and the offense will pull away.

Why SMU Will Win

Memphis can’t enter the stadium without planning on hanging at least 30 on the board, but this isn’t the type of team that puts up 50 – that’s what it might have to do.

Again, this is a consistent attack that does a little of everything right, but it hasn’t put up a ton of points against the decent defenses.

Granted, SMU isn’t a brick wall defensively, but it’s not awful on third downs and it’s decent at coming up with sacks and generating pressure.

As long as the D can keep Memphis dominating the tempo, the offense that’s hitting close to 500 yards per game should be able to do the rest.
