Andy Reid provides information on injuries to Patrick Mahomes, Bashaud Breeland, Sammy Watkins and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid provided his usual injury update to reporters after the team’s first practice of the week on Wednesday. Reid said that every player practiced in some capacity with the exception of LB Willie Gay Jr., who is still dealing with a high ankle sprain. That means Patrick Mahomes as well as other key players like Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Sammy Watkins, and Rashad Fenton all practiced in a limited capacity at the very least.
Reid also provided some more information on Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes and his practice participation.
“Yeah, so he looked good,” Reid said. “He’s just— he’s in the protocol. So there are only certain things he can do and it’s a limited basis, but today is a little bit of a limited practice. So this fit right into what he could do. But he took all the snaps and he feels good. So we’re just going to follow this protocol as close as we possibly can.”
Mahomes practicing on a limited basis and taking all of the repetitions in practice is certainly a good sign, even if today’s practice was one of the lighter days of the week. We’ll likely find out more about how Mahomes has progressed in the next few days.
“He’s done well up to this point,” Reid added. “Today was limited work and no-contact, I think, was the schedule for today. That’s kind of what we’re doing on Wednesday’s so it sort of fits in with that.”
Reid did also clarify that starting CB Bashaud Breeland, who also entered the concussion protocol in Sunday’s win over the Browns, is also working through the concussion protocol. He likely will be listed as a limited participant as well.
All-in-all, this seems to be good news for the Chiefs. They’re trending toward healthy, which they couldn’t exactly say at this time last week.

A new report says that Mahomes will practice in light capacity on Wednesday.
[jwplayer XYRWd7gA-ThvAeFxT]
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is expected to get some work in during practice on Wednesday. How much work, exactly? Well, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be doing much at all.
According to a new report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mahomes will have a “very light practice” today. What that entails exactly remains to be seen. Mahomes is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol and while he reportedly has no symptoms, he’ll need to clear the NFL’s return-to-participation phases to be cleared in time for the game. Part of that protocol is to ramp up physical activity to see if new or worsening symptoms present.
Mahomes will not be a full participant in practice according to Rapoport. He’ll either be listed as a limited participant or non-participant depending on what he’s able to do.
#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will have a very light practice today as part of his plan while in the NFL concussion protocol, source said. Could be listed as limited or DNP, but his work will ramp up during the week. Mahomes, who has no symptoms, will do some tolerance tests, too.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 20, 2021
It’s possible that Mahomes simply does individual work with the training staff off on the sideline today. The work that Mahomes does throughout the week will be ramped up commensurate with the phase of the NFL’s return-to-participation protocols.
We’ll hear more on Mahomes’ status from Andy Reid following the conclusion of practice. What’s abundantly clear is that the whole NFL world is watching, waiting and wondering about the health and status of Mahomes. Unfortunately, this is something that can’t be rushed and we’ll all have our answers in due time.

A look at the first injury report of the week for the Chiefs and Saints.
The Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints have released their first injury reports of the week on Wednesday. Both teams had multiple players sitting out of practice to start the week.
Check out the injury report for each team down below:
Three players didn’t practice for the Kansas City Chiefs during Wednesday’s practice.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided his usual injury updates following practice on Wednesday. While the team didn’t have any injuries to report following the Week 13 game against the Denver Broncos, there appears to be at least one injury that popped up following the game. The team is also still dealing with a sickness in their locker room, with two players sitting out of practice. Reid did clarify that this illness is not related to COVID-19.
“As far as the injuries go, we had a couple of guys that were sick, non-COVID-related,” Reid said. “Yasir Durant and then Tyreek Hill, both were sick.”
Hill, of course, is the big one to keep an eye on here. It’s worth noting that Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a stomach virus that essentially caused him to miss two practices and knocked him out of the Week 13 game against Denver. Durant served as the Chiefs’ swing tackle in Week 13, so his status should be monitored too. Reid didn’t seem too concerned by the status of either player so early in the week.
As far as the sole injury impacting practice, the Chiefs could be without one of their starting linebackers this week.
“Then Damien Wilson had hurt his knee, so he didn’t practice either,” Reid concluded.
Wilson is one of the Chiefs’ starters in their base defense and in several sub-packages. If he’s unable to practice and play this week, it could open up an opportunity for Willie Gay Jr. to get more repetitions than he usually would. He has been working behind Wilson on the depth chart since back in training camp.
Besides those three players, Reid said everyone else was out at practice today. Overall, this team is very healthy heading into the final quarter of the season, you really couldn’t ask for a better situation.

Also, Dez Bryant’s imminent return to Dallas, which free agents are worth re-signing, and breaking down Randy Gregory’s techniques.
A surreal week in Dallas has hit the halfway mark. The Cowboys took advantage of the unusual opportunity to watch their next opponent play live, with more practices to go in which to adjust to what they saw. That comes as the team prepares to say its final farewell to a beloved member of the coaching staff, and as a fan favorite prepares to come back to town wearing enemy colors. Strange times, indeed.
But some are already looking ahead to next season, either forecasting the status of one of the team’s supposed strengths, making a case for which free agents are worth re-signing, or trying to speak into existence who the club should select with their first-round draft pick. There’s tape to break down on how Randy Gregory has come so far so fast in his football comeback, and words of wisdom from Dak Prescott to NFL rookies as he deals with a season cut short. There’s a mini-history lesson on Wednesday football, a TV ratings win for America’s Team, and a bit of celebrity news as a rap star puts his Cowboys fandom on full display with a pricey pendant. Here’s the News and Notes.
The BetMGM oddsmakers are slightly more bullish about UF’s chances against the Vols this Saturday in their latest lines for Wednesday.

Halfway to next Saturday’s matchup between the Florida Gators and the Tennessee Volunteers on the gridiron, the betting lines have been very stable so far this week, and today is not much of a difference.
Florida has been strongly favored in this game since the odds opened up and given that the past few days have been mostly uneventful, that does not really come as much of a surprise.
BetMGM oddsmakers nudged the Gators up a half-point to a 17.5-point favorite on Wednesday while the over/under remained at 61.5 for the third-straight day.
The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. EST in Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tennessee. The game will be broadcast on CBS, can be live-streamed on the CBS Sports app and can be heard on the Gators Radio Network.

A look at the first injury report of the week for the Chiefs and Raiders.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders have released their first injury reports of the week on Wednesday. There were several players who didn’t participate or were limited for both teams.
Check out the injury report for each team down below:
Several Chiefs players won’t practice on Wednesday, but they’ll get one player back from injured reserve.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave his usual pre-practice injury update when he spoke to the media on Wednesday.
It’s the first practice of the week for the Chiefs as they prepare for their Week 11 clash with the Las Vegas Raiders. Fresh off of the bye week, Reid had a few new and old injuries to review.
“As far as injuries go in practice today, BoPete Keyes will not practice,” Reid said. “He’s sick. It looks like a stomach virus.”
Reid specified the stomach virus, which is important to consider during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reid has been very good about clarifying when an illness isn’t something related to COVID-19. This doesn’t sound like something that will keep Keyes out for a significant amount of time.
Next up, Reid got into some injuries that we knew about.
“Taco (Charlton) won’t practice with the ankle,” Reid said.
Charlton is dealing with an ankle fracture suffered in Week 9. He recently suggested that he was set to have surgery on that ankle. The team will presumably have a forthcoming move to place Charlton on injured reserve.
“Mitch Schwartz won’t practice with a back,” Reid continued.
This is an important update because Schwartz was one of three offensive linemen placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The fact that Reid is disclosing his practice status suggests that he’ll be removed from the list today. The problem is that he’s still not practicing due to a back injury. Week 11 would mark his fourth missed game of the season and his fifth week without playing.
Reid did confirm that none of the other players on the list (Martinas Rankin, Mecole Hardman, and Eric Fisher) would be practicing today. That would likely suggest that they’re still on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Specifically with Fisher, if he were to miss more practice time, it wouldn’t necessarily mean that he’d be ruled out for Sunday.
“I’m just going to take it day-by-day, but we’ll see how that goes and how he feels and everything else,” Reid said of playing Fisher with some or no practice during the week. “Have I done that before? I’ve done that, yes. We’ll just see how everything works out.”
The Chiefs will have one player they’ve been missing back at practice, though.
“Alex Okafor will be back at practice,” Reid said.
Okafor was placed on the injured reserve list with a hamstring injury at the end of October. He is set to return to practice, opening up his 21-day practice window. The Chiefs will need to decide in that time frame to activate Okafor or leave him on injured reserve. They are a bit short-handed at the DE position after Charlton’s injury, so bringing back Okafor could provide some depth.
