Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (34-32-9) visit the Tampa Bay Lightning (43-26-6) Thursday. Puck drop from Amalie Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Capitals vs. Lightning odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Capitals were tripped up 2-1 in a shootout by the visiting New York Islanders Wednesday. Washington is 5 points out of the final Eastern Conference Wild Card with just 7 regular-season games remaining.

The Lightning snapped a 4-game losing skid with a 4-0 shutout of the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Tuesday night behind G Andrei Vasilevskiy.

This is the first meeting between these teams since a home-and-home set in November. The Lightning doubled up the Capitals 6-3 on Nov. 13 in Tampa, bouncing back after a 5-1 loss in D.C. on Nov. 11.

Capitals at Lightning projected goalies

Darcy Kuemper (21-23-5, 2.76 GAA, .911 SV%, 5 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (32-20-4, 2.64 GAA, .915 SV%, 3 SO)

Kuemper allowed just a single goal on 29 shots in the loss against the Islanders Wednesday. He has been hit or miss lately, allowing 4 goals in 3 of the past 6 starts and allowing 1 goal in each of the other 3 outings.

Vasilevskiy turned aside all 31 shots he faced in Carolina Tuesday, snapping a personal 3-game losing streak. He is still 4-5-2 with a 2.99 GAA and .900 SV% across 11 starts in March.

Capitals at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 5, Capitals 3

Moneyline

The Lightning (-210) looked championship-caliber last time out in Carolina, but are still just 1-4 in the past 5 games overall. This price is beyond my moneyline limit of -180, but even that would be too expensive.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

TAMPA BAY -1.5 (+125) is a strong play on the puck line. The home side has won 4 straight meetings in this series, and the home team won by 3 or more goals in each of the 2 meetings this season.

While Tampa Bay has won just 6 times in 12 games dating back to March 7, 5 of those wins are by 2 or more goals. If you like the Lightning to win, you should like them to cover the puck line, too.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-102) is the lean.

The Over has cashed in 8 of the past 9 games overall for the Capitals, including 4 in a row on the road. The Over is 4-1 in the past 5 against winning teams for the Caps, too.

The Over has cashed in 5 of the Lightning’s last 7 games at home and is 6-2-1 in their last 9 games against Metropolitan Division teams.

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (7-7-2) and Tampa Bay Lightning (7-6-1) meet Sunday at Amalie Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Capitals vs. Lightning odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Capitals surprised the Lightning 5-1 in the front-end of the back-to-back games on Friday night in D.C. It’s been feast or famine for Washington lately, scoring 5 goals apiece in 2 of the last 3 games, while scoring 2 or fewer goals in 3 of the previous 5 outings.

The Lightning have dropped 2 in a row, getting outscored 8-3 during the span. Tampa Bay is looking to avoid its first 3-game losing streak since an 0-2-2 skid from April 2-8 last season. The Lightning haven’t lost 3 in a row or more in regulation since March 19-24.

Capitals at Lightning projected goalies

Darcy Kuemper (5-6-1, 2.35 GAA, .920 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (4-5-1, 3.11 GAA, .901 SV%)

Kuemper stopped a 4-start winless streak with a win against the Lightning Friday night, stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced. He is 1-3-0 with a 2.27 GAA and .916 SV% this month, mostly the victim of a lack of offensive support. Prior to the 5-goal explosion of support Friday, the Caps offense had scored just 4 goals for him in the last 3 games.

Vasilevskiy allowed a season-high 5 goals on just 24 shots in the ugly loss in Washington, and he’ll be champing at the bit to redeem himself. He has allowed 3 or more goals in 6 straight games, as he just hasn’t been right lately.

Capitals at Lightning picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 4, Capitals 3

Moneyline

The Lightning (-180) are right at my personal limit for a standalone money line play. However, I can’t trust Tampa Bay as such a heavy favorite with the way Vasilevskiy is playing lately. He just hasn’t been himself.

On the flip side, I can’t trust the Capitals (+145), either, as the offense won’t do what it did Friday night.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The CAPITALS +1.5 (-175) are the better play at this price, as Vasilevskiy is on a 6-game streak allowing 3 or more goals. Until he starts to play better for the Lightning -1.5 (+140), Tampa Bay should be avoided.

I don’t like Washington straight up, but for a little insurance on the puck line here, they’re not priced out of line.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-108) is a decent play with the way Vasilevskiy has been going, which sounds crazy to say. Normally he is a shutdown backstop who rarely has a poor game. Eventually he is going to snap into form and rattle off several wins, perhaps even a handful of shutouts. However, Vasilevskiy is not showing anything close to that kind of form.

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (5-0-3) face the Tampa Bay Lightning (4-3-1) Monday at Amalie Arena in Tampa. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Capitals vs. Lightning odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Capitals have yet to lose in regulation through eight outings. The Caps picked up a 2-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes Friday. It was their second straight Under result. Washington is 3-0-3 at home, including a 2-1 overtime loss to Tampa Oct. 16 in the first season meeting between the two.

The Lightning also faced the Coyotes most recently, winning 5-1 Thursday at home. Tampa has a pair of back-to-back 5-1 wins, including a victory at the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday. The Over is 3-0-1 in the previous four for Tampa.

Capitals at Lightning projected goalies

Ilya Samsonov (3-0-1, 2.43 GAA, .904 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy (4-2-1, 2.53 GAA, .911 SV%)

Samsonov was rarely tested last time out against the Coyotes Friday, stopping all 16 shots he faced. He wasn’t in net for the first meeting vs. Tampa Bay.

Vasilevskiy allowed just one goal on 25 shots to push past Arizona, and he has won back-to-back starts. He was in the crease for that 2-1 overtime win in Washington Oct. 16, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced.

Capitals at Lightning odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Lightning 4, Capitals 2

Money line

The LIGHTNING (-155) are the play at home against the Capitals in this battle of the past two Stanley Cup winning teams. Tampa Bay generally defends its home ice with plenty of success, and it is 51-22 across the past 73 as a home favorite, too. Washington, on the other hand, is just 1-5 in the past six as an underdog, and 2-6 in the past eight as a road dog.

Against the spread

The LIGHTNING -1.5 (+150) are worth a roll of the dice at this price. This won’t be a slam-dunk play and might come down to an empty-net goal. Tampa has covered its past two games on the puck line.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-125) is the lean here, although again, I could see this coming down to an empty-netter to make the difference in the end.

The Over is 3-0-1 in the past four games for the Lightning, averaging 3.5 goals per game on offense, while allowing 2.8 goals per game on defense.

The Capitals are averaging 4.0 goals per game to rank sixth in the NHL, and they’re middle of the road with 2.7 goals per game allowed, checking in 12th.
