Giants injury report: Tyrod Taylor, Darren Waller out vs. Raiders

The New York Giants says QB Tyrod Taylor and TE Darren Waller will be out vs. the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday and may land on IR.

The New York Giants were back at practice on Thursday and for the second straight day, quarterback Daniel Jones was practicing with the first team.

Fellow quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been officially ruled out for a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders and Tommy DeVito was given the nod as the team’s No. 2.

In addition to Taylor, tight Darren Waller has been ruled out for Sunday’s game, which was expected given that he’ll miss several weeks.

Daboll implied that both Taylor and Waller could land on injured reserve (IR) in the near future.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: TE Darren Waller (hamstring), QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), NT Dexter Lawrence (rest)

Limited participant: OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL Evan Neal (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), RB Saquon Barkley (elbow), LB Kayvon Thibodeaux (back), K Graham Gano (knee)

Full participant: QB Daniel Jones (neck)

See it: Saquon Barkley welcomes Daniel Jones back to practice with bear hug

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones returned to practice on Wednesday without limitation, while OLs Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal were limited.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and as expected, quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) resumed his role with the first team unit.

Jones was officially cleared for contact on Sunday and barring any setbacks, will start against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Running back Saquon Barkley, who is nursing an elbow injury, was thrilled to see his friend on the field.

“It’s just good to have another player out there with DJ, I know he’s excited. He’s played with Saquon for a bit so it’s just good to have him back,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

Meanwhile, offensive tackles Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal are each inching closer to a return.

Giants must turn young receivers loose to help last-ranked offense

The New York Giants are ranked dead last in nearly every offensive category. How did they get here and what can they change down the stretch?

The New York Giants’ offense is officially the worst in the NFL. There’s no gray area anymore and nothing to debate. They’re the worst.

Now comes the process of who to blame and how to fix it. The offensive line has been a mess (even when healthy) and injuries to Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley haven’t helped.

Barkley has been back for three weeks now and Jones will return this Sunday against the Raiders in Las Vegas but the Giants probably won’t have tight end Darren Waller (hamstring) for a while. He has been their top target in the passing game (when they choose to have one).

But there has to be more to the poor performance than just injuries. Sure, they cut into the gameplan and curtail your capabilities but we have not seen the coaching staff get creative at all to try to generate some kind of attack.

The Giants have two players who can help them do that in wide receivers Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson. We’ve seen them try to ignite something with both but then quickly back off. That has frustrated fans greatly.

With nothing much to lose now, it’s time to turn these two players loose. The team used Day 2 draft capital on both and it’s time to find out if they were worth it.

Looking down the roster, there are other things they can do such as throw the ball to Isaiah Hodgins, last year’s breakout star who is suddenly a non-factor.

With Waller hurting, they must elevate either Daniel Bellinger or Lawrence Cager into a bigger role in the passing game.

And what is the plan for Parris Campbell?

There’s a ton of meat on the bone here that needs to be gnawed. The shine is off the apple for head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Guys get hurt. Coaches coach. You can’t change the first, but you sure change the second. It’s time for the coaching to take charge of this mess and turn it around.

Giants’ Mike Kafka: Jalin Hyatt’s role could continue to grow

New York Giants OC Mike Kafka is impressed with Jalin Hyatt’s growth and believes he could see a larger role as the season rolls on.

It has taken nearly half a season, but New York Giants fans are finally going to get a larger dose of the team’s most dynamic player — rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.

Hyatt, a third-round pick out of Tennessee who once scored five touchdowns against Nick Saban’s Alabama defense and ran an unheard of 24 miles per hour in training camp, is about to be sprung loose by Giants’ offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Hyatt was an integral part of the Giants’ Week 2 comeback victory against the Arizona Cardinals, catching two passes for 89 yards in the game but then receded back to the bench and was targeted just twice in three lopsided losses to San Francisco, Seattle and Miami.

But then starting quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) was sidelined and backup Tyrod Taylor has taken over the past two weeks. He and Hyatt have formed a bit of a bond as Hyatt has been targeted nine times, catching five for a total of 96 yards.

The Giants have always believed they had something special in Hyatt as a deep threat. Their only concern was his readiness to play more snaps.

“I’d say he’s right on schedule, working every single day, looking to improve on all the little things that we talk about in our individual meetings, all the fundamentals, the techniques and getting more accustomed to the offense each week,” Kafka said this week. “You can see that growth.”

“Jalin’s doing a great job in his role, every week’s different. I’d say, Jalin’s had some good production downfield a little bit, so I think he’s finding a role. I think as the weeks go on and the season goes on, maybe it grows a little bit more from there, but he’s right on schedule.”

Hyatt is expected to pair with last year’s second-round pick, Wan’Dale Robinson, to form a duo that will have NFL defenses on high alert. Kafka would not speak to the turning of the page in the Giants’ wide receiver room, taking the high road as most coaches do.

“That whole receiver room is really pretty close, and they do a great job together bouncing ideas off each other and studying and prepping,” said Kakfa. “I think those two are really no different, they’re young guys trying to learn and grow together so I think if they form a nice little friendship — it’s a great leadership that we have in that room with some of those veteran guys, too, that kind of bring them together.”

Let’s face it. Speed kills and Hyatt and Robinson have it. The Giants’ offense is dead in the water right now. They are averaging 3.7 yards per rush and 9.3 yards per reception. It’s time to let the speed loose.

“He’ll throw out here at practice, same as yesterday,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. “Like I said yesterday, doctors will let me know when he’s ready to play.”

“When the doctors tell me he’s ready to play he’ll be ready to play,” Daboll repeated when asked again.

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones limited in return to practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones returned to practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday, while LT Andrew Thomas continues to sit out.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and so did quarterback Daniel Jones, who is still nursing a neck injury.

Although Jones is not yet cleared for contact, he was able to do some throwing and could be in play for Sunday, although that should be considered unlikely.

“He’s doing better and he’ll be out here at practice today doing some stuff. We’ll see where we’re at,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “He’s cleared to throw so that’s what he’s going to do today.”

Asked if there’s any concern DJ misses the rest of the season, Daboll said his quarterback will “be back.”

The news wasn’t as positive for several others, including left tackle Andrew Thomas, who continues to sit out with a hamstring injury.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Evan Neal (ankle), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (neck), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), CB Cor’Dale Flott (ankle/shoulder), K Graham Gano (knee), OL Mark Glowinski (quad/ankle), CB Adoree’ Jackson (neck), OL Shane Lemieux (groin/biceps)

Endzone again eludes Giants in 14-9 loss to Bills

The New York Giants failed to score from the 1-yard line to end each half on Sunday, ultimately falling to the Buffalo Bills, 14-9.

The New York Giants faced off against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York on Sunday Night Football in Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season.

It was the Giants’ fourth prime-time game of this young season.

The Giants came into the game 0-3 in prime time, 1-4 overall, and the only NFL team that had yet to run an offensive play with the lead this season.

Some of that changed on Sunday night, but the Giants still couldn’t overcome the injuries and adversity enough to pull out a win.

But it wasn’t from a lack of trying.
