9 waiver wire targets in fantasy football for Week 9

Waiver wire pickups for Week 9.

It’s November and one thing is on everybody’s minds: fantasy football. It’s that time of the season to either hit the panic button or make that addition that will take your team to a championship.

With more injuries piling up with big-name players, you might think that all is lost. When you take a closer look at the waiver wire, you can see there is still a lot of value out there.

Here are eight players you should consider adding to your fantasy roster for Week 9:

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 8 preview

Have you ever been in a fantasy football matchup where it was coming down to the wire with only a small percentage to win, but one of your players makes a big play, and all of sudden you pull out an amazing last-second win?

There is nothing better than that thrilling win where moments earlier you felt you were about to suffer a tough loss. The Detroit Lions experienced this against the Atlanta Falcons last week, and most likely many fantasy owners did too.

Whether it was Tyler Lockett (WR Seahawks) having a big game on Sunday night, or a late score by the Bears defense —  it’s never until it’s over both in the NFL and especially in fantasy football.

Lions vs. Colts fantasy focus

The Lions have won two games in a row, and players such as T.J. Hockenson, D’Andre Swift, and Kenny Golladay have been a big reason why. If you look at those three players you see three key pieces for the Lions future and for fantasy football.

The Indianapolis Colts also have some unique fantasy players when you look at Jonathan Taylor (RB), Paris Campbell (WR), and Michael Pittman Jr.(WR). Those three players are also key components to that team’s future and to dynasty fantasy football owners too.

I feel the Lions have the more explosive offense and the Colts have shown to be a solid defense this year. The question is if Matthew Stafford can put up yards and points needed against a Colts defense that allows under 200 yards passing per game through Week 7

I see the Lions being able to score with their offensive weapons all healthy. In fantasy football consider playing a guy like Marvin Jones Jr or even Kerryon Johnson. I think they each could be sneaky sleepers this week. I see this being a close game where the Lions have just enough to win.

Bottom Line

Despite the score, your fantasy team always has a chance if it’s close. If you suffered some tough injuries this week, you still aren’t out of it if you have depth on your roster or are willing to make some trades.

Key Injuries to be aware of and keep your eye on:

Odell Beckham Jr. (WR Browns)
Chris Godwin (WR Buccaneers)
Allen Robinson (WR Bears)
Deebo Samuel (WR 49ers)
Kenyan Drake (RB Cardinals)
Joe Mixon (RB Bengals)
Phillip Lindsay (RB Broncos)
Dallas Goedert (TE Eagles)

Always hang in there despite the score, injuries, or any other circumstances. As the Lions learned again this past week, as with fantasy football always coming down to a few points here and there. You just never know what might happen when it’s all said and done.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 7 preview

A deep look at this week’s fantasy option for the Lions and around the league

We are back to a regular week in the NFL after multiple occurrences of COVID-19 that juggled schedules, and that is music to the ears of fantasy football owners. The normal Thursday-Sunday-Monday games are a welcome sight to the unusual game schedule and reschedules that we have had the past couple of weeks. This week has a great slate of games.

Injuries again are a big concern for fantasy owners in Week 7 and managing injuries is always a key to fantasy football success. Players such as Zach Ertz (TE Eagles), Miles Sanders (RB Eagles), Curtis Samuel (WR Panthers), Raheem Mostert (RB 49ers), Baker Mayfield (QB Browns), and Jonnu Smith (TE Titans) are all dealing with ailments that might impact your lineup.

Let’s take a look at some important roster decisions, waiver wire options, and dive deeper into a big game for the Detroit Lions as they travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons on this week’s edition of the Fantasy Football Weekly.

Lions at Falcons fantasy focus

The Lions are coming off a win in Jacksonville and are looking to stack another win on top of that against the Falcons. Speaking of stacks, that is a new trend in fantasy football where owners will try to stack multiple players from one team that they think could have a great week. Here are a few fantasy football stacks that might help your lineup in this matchup.

Atlanta Falcons Stacks:

Matt Ryan QB, Julio Jones WR and Hayden Hurst TE

Matt Ryan QB, Todd Gurley RB and Calvin Ridley WR

Detroit Lions Stacks:

Matthew Stafford QB, Kenny Golladay WR and T.J. Hockenson TE

Matthew Stafford QB, D’Andre Swift RB and Marvin Jones WR

This game sets up to be a fun one to watch and one where you should load up your fantasy football lineups with all the Falcons and Lions that you can. It’s in a dome atmosphere, so expect both passing games to feast on the opposing defenses. Points will be scored in bunches during this game, and the Lions really need to try to stack another win this week against a struggling Falcons football team.

Bottom Line

When you are setting up your lineup this week, check to see if you can stack a few players from a good offense. Quarterback and wide receiver are often the best stacks to use, but a dynamic pass-catching running back along with an elite quarterback is an interesting stack to look for too.

Can the Lions stack another victory to get back to sea level this season? Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford are friends, have had similar careers, and both will probably play well on Sunday. Look for a fun game in “Hotlanta” where the Lions hope to outscore the Falcons and have their defense hold on in the end.

The injuries this week are a major concern along with the bye weeks, so check your waiver wire and lineups leading up to the games this week. Tons of good matchups to enjoy this week. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some football this weekend. We are nearly at the halfway point, so every win counts. Good luck everyone and try your best to stack another win this week in fantasy football.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 6 preview

Who to start and sit around the NFL and in the Lions-Jaguars game

Have you ever looked at your fantasy football league standings and wondered how some teams have such a good record early in the season? The Detroit Lions are looking up at others in the NFC North and feel the same way. Both for your fantasy team and the Lions, please remember that it is early with lots of football still to play.

[lawrence-related id=51922]

The toughest loss to accept in fantasy football is that one where it comes down to the final game of the week and your opponent has a player or two still yet to play, and they score just enough to beat you. This past week — with games on Monday and Tuesday — that factor was really in play. Many probably felt that heartbreak of a last-second loss in fantasy football, which is another feeling the Lions can relate with.

Let’s do, as many NFL head coaches often say, and put the past behind us. Onto the next week, Week 6.

There are lots of interesting matchups, waiver wire pickups to help with those injuries, and a Lions game in Jacksonville to put the spotlight on. We will do all of that and more in this week’s Fantasy Football Weekly.

Lions at Jaguars fantasy focus

A quality fantasy football offense often has a top-notch quarterback, a few dynamic wide receivers, a pass-catching tight end, and multiple complementary running backs. That represents the Lions much more than the Jacksonville Jaguars roster these days.

The Jaguars resemble a fantasy football team constructed via the waiver wire. They feature Gardner Minshew at quarterback, who was a very late draft pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Their receiving corps is filled with a bunch of names you won’t see anywhere near the top of the fantasy charts.

They do have Tyler Eifert at tight end. Yes, the same Tyler Eifert who blew up one year in fantasy football with 13 touchdowns, but that year was all the way back in 2015. The Jaguars cut Leonard Fournette before the season started and replaced him with an unknown, undrafted running back James Robinson out of Illinois State. This team the Lions are facing is filled with all the guys no one else wanted. That is what makes them so dangerous.

There are so many ways this game could go. The Lions could put up great fantasy statistics based on their talent and the number of points the Jaguars defense has given up on average so far this year (36.8 PPG). The Jaguars could show why they are underrated and run the ball all over the Lions defense, which has greatly struggled to stop the run. The final scenario is that it could just be a very ugly game across the board for both teams with poor play on both sides of the ball. For fantasy purposes, put in your fantasy players on both teams. It feels like points will be scored in this one regardless.

Bottom Line

Could you imagine a fantasy football season where you start out with a big lead early on every week only to lose that lead throughout your matchup and ultimately get beat by your opponent at the very end?

Those losses week after week where you were ahead to start only to lose in the end would be crushing. Seeing losses like that pile up is demoralizing for any fantasy owner and the key is to try to stop the trend any way possible.

This is the situation facing the Lions and many fantasy owners out there right now. Those late losses seem to hurt more than others, but there is still lots of time left to turn the season around.

Try to go undefeated this week instead of focusing on one of those tough losses in the past. Winning each week and trying to put your best effort out there is the best strategy for your fantasy team and also for the Detroit Lions.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 3 Preview

Derek Okrie delivers his latest installment of Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly of 2020, previewing the next week of the regular season.

The unpredictability of fantasy football is just amazing from week to week. In just seven short days you never really know who is going to do well, how injuries will impact players, how coaches are doing to delegate rushing attempts or receiving targets, and just how your fantasy team will do as a whole from one week to another.

In Week 2, did anyone see Dak Prescott (QB Cowboys) throwing for 450 passing yards, yet rushing for 3 touchdowns? Did anyone have Julian Edelman (WR Patriots) at the top of the receiving charts with 179 yards in Week 2? Did anyone anticipate Mike Gesicki (TE Dolphins) to have 130 yards and a touchdown in a close game against the Buffalo Bills? Coaches often say it is a week to week league. You just never know what might happen in the NFL and the same goes for fantasy football.

Here is the Fantasy Football Weekly where we give you an overview of Week 3 in both fantasy football and the National Football League.

Lions at Cardinals fantasy focus

The Lions defense is giving up a ton of passing yards and touchdowns once again. Aaron Jones had a field day running the ball against them last week, so start Keyan Drake (RB Cardinals), DeAndre Hopkins (WR Cardinals), Christian Kirk (WR Cardinals), and Dan Arnold (TE Cardinals) this week against the Lions.

In addition to trying to find a way to stop the Cardinals offense, the Lions offense also needs to have a great day offensively in Arizona if they want to have a chance in this game. Kenny Golladay is expected to be back in uniform for the Lions and Matthew Stafford is due for a big game, so this Sunday would be the perfect time to play out of his mind. Put all the Lions skill players in your lineup this week, expect more from D’Andre Swift each week– in the passing game especially — and this looks like a game where seventy-plus points could go up on the scoreboard.

Bottom Line

Being unpredictable is the name of the game when it comes to fantasy football. Last week the NFL saw more injuries than most weeks and some star players were significantly hurt. Check those injury reports, and make sure you have a healthy lineup in before the Thursday game this week.

We will see if the Detroit Lions can rebound, hopefully, if your fantasy team lost last week they will rebound too. The game of football can be a very unpredicatable, competitive, and inconsistent one at times, and that parallels fantasy football as well. These are also the same factors that make it so fun to watch and why we love it so much.

Fantasy Waiver Wire: Don’t sleep on Washington TE Logan Thomas

Washington tight end Logan Thomas could become a valuable fantasy football option going forward, with a nice rapport with Dwayne Haskins.

Were you able to come away with a victory in your first fantasy football matchup of the new year? Whether you did or didn’t, it sure was fun to sit around and watch football for seven-plus hours again on Sunday, wasn’t it?

With Week 2 fast approaching, the waiver wire deadline is coming quickly, and free agents will be dispersed to those who want them in a matter of hours. So while you may have a few holes on your roster to fill, be it because of injuries or subverted expectations, now is a good time to look at some players to potentially add to your roster.

Did you get screwed by the injury to TE George Kittle? Or are you looking for a tight end to add in deeper leagues? We suggest you take a long, hard look at Washington TE Logan Thomas for your roster.

As arguably one of the only viable fantasy pass-catchers in Washington, Thomas is likely to continue forward with his big share of the workload, playing alongside Terry McLaurin and acting as one of the few options that QB Dwayne Haskins has to go to in the passing game.

We saw Thomas come up with a nice touchdown in Washington’s upset victory over the Eagles on Sunday, and there could definitely be more where that came from in the future.

So if you haven’t put in your waiver claims just yet, or you still have time before the deadline upon reading this, take a look at Thomas. He could end up winning a few games for you down the road.

Shaquem Griffin stays in Seattle as Seahawks add him to practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks waived linebacker Shaquem Griffin during initial roster cuts but were able to add him back to the practice squad.

The Seahawks waived fan-favorite defensive end/ linebacker Shaquem Griffin during initial roster cuts on Saturday but were able to add him back to the practice squad Sunday morning. Griffin will remain in Seattle for now with his twin brother, cornerback Shaquill Griffin.

Seattle selecting the Griffin brothers in back to back NFL drafts made for a number of heartwarming stories for football fans around the league. The twins also spent their college days together playing for the University of Central Florida Knights.

Griffin became the first one-handed player to be drafted into the NFL in the modern area.

In Seattle, he has has been utilized on mostly special teams but was given a test run rotating in at the edge position last season to bolter the Seahawks’ pass rush. Perhaps another year will help with his development as he continues to make his case for the active roster.

Griffin’s twin, Shaquill, will be playing in the final year of his rookie contract and also has every reason to continue to compete.

LIVE TRACKER: Seattle Seahawks 2020 practice squad signings

Tracking all the reported signings as the Seattle Seahawks begin to form their 2020 NFL practice squad.

The Seattle Seahawks, like all teams around the league, had to trim their rosters down to 53 players by Saturday’s deadline. Most of the players who were cut were then placed on the waiver wire.

The claiming period for all players placed on waivers expired Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. PT.  Teams can now start to establish their practice squads of up to 16 players, which can consist of up to six veterans regardless of the number of accrued seasons they have in the NFL due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Before the practice squad is official set, we’ll be tacking all reported signings throughout the day, so check back often. The newest information will be added to the top of this list.

Wide receiver Lance Lenoir

Wide receiver Aaron Fuller

Defensive back Ryan Neal

Cornerback Gavin Heslop

Cornerback Jayson Stanley

Tight end Stephen Sullivan

Wide receiver Cody Thompson

Linebacker Shaquem Griffin

Tracking 2020 Saints practice squad signings, waiver claims

The New Orleans Saints released a wave of players in NFL roster cuts, but have the opportunity to re-sign many of them to the practice squad

[jwplayer po1kb61l-ThvAeFxT]

Nearly 900 NFL players had their contracts wiped out with teams at the league’s roster cuts deadline, putting many of them onto the waiver wire.

Some of the players released by the New Orleans Saints have returned to the practice squad, while a few others may get fresh starts with new teams. We’ve collected all of the latest reports and roster moves below, and will continue to update the list as more information becomes available, so check back often.

But first, a quick refresher on how the practice squad rules will look different in 2020. The new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and NFL Players Association expanded the practice squad from 10 contracts to 12, but the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the NFL to widen it again to 16 members.

Additionally, up to six of those players may be veterans with unlimited NFL experience (in the past, only those with three or fewer accrued seasons were practice squad eligible). Teams must designate four practice squad players as being protected from poaching by other teams each Tuesday during the regular season.

Now that the housekeeping is out of the way: here’s who is waiting in the wings in the Big Easy:

Signed to the Saints practice squad

  • Quarterback-turned-tight end Tommy Stevens is returning to the Saints practice squad after passing through waivers, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. He’ll get an opportunity to continue to develop while working with familiar coaches.
  • Undrafted rookie cornerback Keith Washington Jr. is also signing with the Saints practice squad, as announced by his representatives at Icon Sports Consulting. Washington really came on as training camp progressed and could climb the depth chart later this season.
  • The Saints expect to sign backup offensive lineman Cameron Tom to their practice squad, reports Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. Tom is a versatile pro who can play both guard and center, and it’s always good to have players with NFL reps to their credit ready to call up.
  • NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reported that rookie linebacker Joe Bachie is signing with the Saints practice squad. Bachie received more guaranteed money in his contract than any other Saints undrafted rookie, and the coaching staff clearly liked what he showed in training camp.

Former Saints on new teams

  • Veteran pass rusher Mario Edwards Jr. joined the Chicago Bears, agreeing to a deal overnight. Because he is a sixth-year pro, he wasn’t eligible for waivers and could immediately hear out offers from other teams.

Broncos made no player claims, lost one player on waiver wire

The Broncos lost a linebacker on the waiver wire.

The Denver Broncos did not place any claims on the waiver wire this weekend, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

That’s not surprising given that general manager John Elway said on Saturday even that the team did not plan to be active on the waiver wire.

“I think we feel pretty good about where we are, kind of excited about the football team we have,” Elway said.

Denver did lose one player on the waiver wire. After being cut Saturday, linebacker Justin Hollins was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams. In L.A., Hollins will be reunited with defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who served as the Broncos’ outside linebackers coach last year.

Denver probably would have tried to sign Hollins to the practice squad had he cleared waivers. The Broncos will not be bringing back wide receiver Juwann Winfree, according to Klis. Winfree cleared waivers and will likely land on another team’s practice squad.
