UFC 283 results: Jamahal Hill wins gutsy battle for vacant title, retires Glover Teixeira

The UFC 283 main event resulted in one fighter reaching the pinnacle of the sport, while another rode off into the sunset.

RIO DE JANEIRO – The UFC 283 main event resulted in one fighter reaching the pinnacle of the sport, while another rode off into the sunset.

[autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag](12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) defeated [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (33-9 MMA, 16-7 UFC) to win the UFC light heavyweight title via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-44). The vacant light heavyweight title bout was the UFC 283 main event at Jeunesse Arena.

Many pundits wondered how Hill would do when faced with the grappling challenges of Teixeira. The tone was set early when Hill shut down numerous takedown attempts by Teixeira. The first round was largely contested at distance with an occasional (failed) Teixeira attempt to drag it down.

In Round 2, the pace picked up as defense largely went by the wayside. In a round that wouldn’t have looked out of place if aligned with his five thrilling rounds against Jiri Prochazka in June, Teixeira found himself in trouble due to a Hill head kick.

Hill sensed Texeira’s instability and pounced with dozens of punches. Teixeira kept Hill at bay, but absorbed some damage in the process. Somehow, someway, Teixeira got Hill down and landed ground-and-pound before the round ended.

In Round 3, Hill turned up the volume. He battered Teixeira with a barrage of punches as the bout appeared to be close to a stoppage at multiple points. Hill went back to the head kick again and found success but Teixeira hung tough.

Into the championship rounds, Teixeira was mangled with nasty cuts over both eyes. He absorbed more and more strikes as the round progressed – so many strikes, in fact, that there was debate in the corner about throwing in the towel.

Ultimately, the corners and physicians decided to let the fight go on, to which Teixeira exclaimed, “Let’s go, baby. F*cking A.”

Teixeira came out aggressive, straight at Hill. In the opening minute, he took Hill down and ended up in mount. Hill scrambled and ended up on top – a crucial reversal. With one minute left, Texeira escaped to his feet. As the clock ticked, Hill avoided unnecessary exchanges en route to the final bell.

Moments after the title was wrapped around an emotional Hill’s waist, Teixeira took off his gloves and placed them in the center of the cage – as he announced his retirement.

“I’m too tough for my own good,” Teixeira said. “I’m too tough for my own health,” as he explained why he’d prefer to turn his attention to coaching at this point in his life.

Twitter reacts to Brandon Moreno’s title unification TKO win over Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 283

See the top Twitter reactions to Brandon Moreno’s title unification bout win over Deiveson Figueiredo in the UFC 283 co-main event.

[autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] officially has bragging rights over [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] after he emerged victorious from their definitive flyweight title unification bout on Saturday at UFC 283.

In the historic fourth matchup between them, Moreno (21-5-2 MMA, 9-2-2 UFC) secured a third-round TKO win by doctor’s stoppage due to a cut over Figueiredo (21-3-1 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro to improve to 2-1-1 in their respective series. No win was more critical than this one, though, because the Mexican advanced from interim to undisputed champion with the win.

Check below for the top Twitter reactions to Moreno’s victory over Figueiredo at UFC 283.

UFC 283 results: Brandon Moreno claims title in fourth meeting, sends Deiveson Figueiredo to bantamweight

A doctor’s stoppage led to the crowning of Brandon Moreno as the undisputed UFC flyweight champion in the co-main event of UFC 283.

RIO DE JANEIRO – [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] is once again the undisputed flyweight champion after a bittersweet ending to a historic fourth meeting with his toughest rival.

After a brilliant start to the flyweight title unification bout for Moreno (21-6-2 MMA, 9-3-2 UFC) in the UFC 283 co-main event against Deiveson Figueiredo, a doctor’s stoppage led to the end of the fight after the third round. The right eye of Figueiredo (21-3-1 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) was swollen shut, resulting in the crowning of Moreno as champion at Jeunesse Arena.

The fight hit the mat just seconds after it began.

As Figueiredo closed the distance, Moreno changed levels to complete a nice takedown. Figueiredo countered by holding on to a guillotine attempt, and eventually used the hold to get the fight back to the feet. Both fighters were calculated with their strikes in the intermittent exchanges that followed as Figueiredo kept Moreno circling on the outside.

A late takedown led to Figueiredo attacking leg submissions, but couldn’t secure anything before the end of the round. Moreno would protest a kick Figueiredo landed on the ground.

Figueiredo caught a Moreno kick and brought the fight to the ground early in the second round. Aside from stacking for a moment, Figueiredo was unable to mount anything significant, and Moreno got back to his feet. Quick strikes from both fighters followed, including 1-2 combinations that Moreno’s corner called for between rounds.

Figueiredo attempted a head kick which led to a wild scramble of takedown attempts and sweeps. Ultimately, the action slowed with a deep guillotine attempt from Figueiredo. Moreno remained calm and worked free, taking top position in the closing moments.

In the third, Moreno began to lunge forward with loopy punches. After missing wildly with a pair, Moreno kept at it and landed a big left hand that bothered Figueiredo because the knuckle went into the eye. Figueiredo backed away to protest, but referee Herb Dean did not pause the action, prompting Moreno to use the opportunity for a takedown.

It was apparent Figueiredo’s eye was swelling rapidly, and a cut was visible too. Moreno would spend the remainder of the round on top, controlling and mixing in ground and pound.

Between rounds, the cageside physician was brought in to check on Figueiredo’s eye, which was swollen completely shut. The decision to stop the fight was made with no protest from Figueiredo, resulting in the TKO victory for Moreno.

Moreno entered the contest on the heels of an interim title-winning victory over Kai Kara-France at UFC 277. Prior to that, he spent the three previous appearances against Figueiredo, culminating in Saturday’s historic fourth bout.

Even with the anti-climatic ending, it appears there will be no fifth bout on the horizon as Figueiredo announced he plans to move up to the bantamweight division the next time he steps into the octagon.

UFC 283 results: Gilbert Burns quickly taps Neil Magny, calls out Colby Covington

It took Gilbert Burns nine months to find a fight, and less than five minutes to end it at UFC 283.

RIO DE JANEIRO –  It took [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] nine months to find a fight, and less than five minutes to end it at UFC 283.

In the UFC 283 featured bout, Burns (21-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) submitted [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] (27-10 MMA, 20-9 UFC) by arm-triangle choke at 4:15 of Round 1. The welterweight bout was part of the pay-per-view main card at Jeunesse Arena.

After a brief feeling-out process, Burns got hold of Magny and the beginning of the end commenced. Burns elevated and dropped Magny to the canvas. Slowly but surely, Burns moved into mount. Once there, Burns quickly grabbed hold of Magny’s neck and shifted to the side, the submission locked.

After the fight, Burns said he wants a quick turnaround and called for a bout against Colby Covington.

“I want to be back very quick, and I’m going to finish everybody,” Burns yelled during his in-cage interview with Daniel Cormier. “Colby Covington, I’m coming for you.

With the victory, Burns bounces back from a closely contested Fight of the Year candidate loss against Khamzat Chimaev in April. He is 7-2 in his most recent nine bouts, with the only other loss in a UFC welterweight title challenge against Kamaru Usman in 2021.

Magny falls to 1-2 in his most recent three. One of the most active fighters on the UFC roster, Magny is 9-3 since February 2020.

UFC 283 results: Jessica Andrade lights up Lauren Murphy in dominant decision victory

Former strawweight champ Jessica Andrade turned in a one-sided performance against former title challenger Lauren Murphy at UFC 283.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Former UFC strawweight champion [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] put on an absolute clinic in her home country.

Andrade (24-9 MMA, 15-7 UFC) picked off  Lauren Murphy seemingly at every turn in their bout at UFC 283, leading to final scorecards that saw a total of five 10-8 scores issued between the three official judges. The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC 283 main card at Jeunesse Arena.

Andrade gauged the distance for a few moments before ramping up the forward pressure. Powerful punches began to find their mark, and she kept Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) off guard by landing a nice jumping front switch kick. Midway through the round, Murphy was bloodied from punches as Andrade’s blitzes of strikes scored over and over. It was a sign of more things to come.

Murphy attempted to change levels and get the fight to the mat, but Andrade wasn’t having it. As the crowd began to chant for Andrade, more combinations landed.

Murphy got a takedown and took the back, but the moment lasted just a few seconds before Andrade returned to her feet and put together more strikes before the horn.

The story of the fight would not change much over the next two rounds.

Andrade continued to beat Murphy to the punch at virtually every sequence. Murphy’s attempts to change levels and mount significant offense of her own failed repeatedly. Andrade found her mark at will, and referee Osiris Maia probably could have stopped the action at any point in the third round without much protest.

The judges’ scores read 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26 in Andrade’s favor, indicating the one-sided nature of the bout.

With the win, Andrade extends her current winning streak to three. The former strawweight champ entered on the heels of back-to-back first-round finishes against Cynthia Calvillo and Amanda Lemos. The Brazilian holds the No. 4 spot in the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s flyweight rankings, and is in prime position to challenge for the title again.

Murphy hoped to make it two straight after a win over former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate last July, but Andrade’s power and striking blitzes were too much to handle.

Jose Aldo to be inducted into UFC Hall of Fame, promotion announces

“The King of Rio,” Jose Aldo, will add UFC Hall of Famer to his lengthy resume in 2023.

[autotag]Jose Aldo[/autotag] is a lot of things, and come this summer, he can add “UFC Hall of Famer” to the list.

Regarded by many as the greatest featherweight fighter in MMA history, Aldo will be inducted as part of the 2023 UFC Hall of Fame class, the promotion announced Saturday in a video package during the UFC 283 broadcast.

The video was simultaneously played in Jeunesse Arena, where an emotional Aldo was seated cageside with his coach Andre Pederneiras, manager Ed Soares and wife Vivianne (Perreira).

“Jose Aldo is the greatest featherweight of all time,” UFC president Dana White said in a news release. “From WEC to UFC, Jose helped us build the sport of MMA and UFC as a brand, as well as change the perception of the smaller weight classes and what they could accomplish inside the octagon. It will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer.”

Aldo officially stepped away from MMA in September 2022 with a 13-7 UFC record and one of the most lengthy accolade lists in promotion history. He is a two-time featherweight champion, former interim champion and former WEC champion. His seven UFC featherweight title defenses rank first all-time. He also is a six-time performance bonus winner.

Known for his signature leg kicks and “Run This Town” walkout, as well as his legendary takedown defense and ability to evolve with new waves of talent, Aldo leaves the sport as one of the most elite and respected fighters of his generation.

While no official date for the Hall of Fame ceremony was announced, it historically coincides with the promotion’s “International Fight Week” festivities in July.

UFC 283 results: Johnny Walker smashes Paul Craig for first-round TKO, reveals plan for two titles

Johnny Walker came out of the gate firing at UFC 283 and it resulted in a quick finish of Paul Craig.

RIO DE JANEIRO – [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] came out of the gate firing at UFC 283 and it resulted in a quick finish of [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag].

Walker (20-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) took advantage of Craig’s pursuit of the takedown and made him pay with heavy shots for the TKO finish at the 2:16 mark of Round 1 (via Twitter):

The light heavyweight bout opened up the UFC 283 main card at Jeunesse Arena.

After a feeling-out process on the feet in the early going, Craig (16-6-1 MMA, 8-6-1 UFC) tried for a single-leg takedown on Walker. The Brazilian showed incredible balance, however, and managed to land a pair of hard punches on Craig that got him hurt.

Craig stumbled to the ground, and Walker continued to land shots until the referee stepped in.

With back-to-back wins on his record, Walker made it clear in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier that he has big plans for the future.

“I don’t give a f*ck (who is next),” Walker told Cormier. “This is my division now. You are the big champ-champ (Cormier). I want to be like you. I want to be like Cormier with two belts.”
