Western Kentucky at UTSA odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Western Kentucky at UTSA odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (8-4, 7-1 C-USA) and UTSA Roadrunners (11-1,7-1) are lined up for Friday’s Conference USA Championship Game. Kickoff from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, is slated for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Western Kentucky vs. UTSA odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Western Kentucky went 1-4 over its first five games and has won seven consecutive games since.  One of those four losses was a 52-46 setback against this UTSA squad Oct. 9. The Hilltoppers have averaged a robust 48.0 points per game over their last five wins. The WKU offense averages 43.3 PPG and 525.1 yards per contest; both figures rank second in the nation.

The Roadrunners were tripped up by North Texas last week. Texas-San Antonio toted an unblemished record into that game but was undone but costly turnovers, solid UNT defense, and a big run game that saw the Mean Green pile up 340 yards on the ground. That performance was against a UTSA defense that ranks 19th nationally against the run (121.3 yards per game allowed).

Western Kentucky at UTSA odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Western Kentucky 38, UTSA 31

Money line

The Hilltoppers are a lean here, but PASS unless you can get price of -155 or better.

Against the spread

Western Kentucky is 5-0 ATS across its last five games.

The Hilltoppers have made some defensive adjustments and have played better football over the last couple months. Some of that was WKU getting thru the Army-Indiana-Michigan State-UTSA portion of its schedule. However, in yards-per-play and available-yards comparisons, the ‘Toppers have made some incremental improvements.

Five-thousand-yard man QB Bailey Zappe — okay, the Western Kentucky quarterback has only thrown for 4,968 yards — directs a pass-first (and nearly pass-only) offense that has been clicking of late. Zappe has thrown 52 touchdown passes.

UTSA’s defense does well to create havoc but more so on running plays, and the Roadrunners have given up more than their share of explosive plays through the air. The UTSA offense is also a tad more likely to get stifled between the 40s.

TAKE WESTERN KENTUCKY -3.5 (-102) on a tight lean. A straight 3 points would be nice, but the discounted juice softens the protest.

Over/Under

The Oct. 9 meeting between these two produced 98 points and over 1,200 total yards. Figure this game being managed a bit differently and that the improvements made by the Western Kentucky defense since that first matchup help keep this one dialed back.

TAKE THE UNDER 72.5 (-108).

UTSA at Illinois odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UTSA at Illinois odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UTSA Roadrunners and Illinois Fighting Illini meet Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the UTSA at Illinois odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Texas-San Antonio will challenge for a West Division title in Conference USA, and a big reason is RB Sincere McCormick. Not only is he one of the best tailbacks in C-USA, he is a top-tier talent in the nation. QB Frank Harris is also a dual-threat signal caller who can help the Roadrunners pile up the points.

The Fighting Illini (1-0) already have a game under their belts, easing past Nebraska 30-22 in Champaign last weekend as 6.5-point underdogs.

Illinois won in Bret Bielema’s debut erasing an early 9-2 deficit for the eight-point win. The Illini offense was balanced, posting 167 rushing yards and 159 yards through the air. Illinois was able to get to the quarterback, recording five sacks, while going even in the turnover department.

UTSA at Illinois odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 29, UTSA 26

Money line

Illinois (-205) will cost you over two times your potential return, and that’s risky business against an underrated opponent.

AVOID.

Against the spread

UTSA +4.5 (-112) is a dangerous opponent, and Illinois -4.5 (-108) should not look past the Sun Belt Conference visitors. McCormick is Power 5 quality, and he could gash an Illini defense that yielded 160 yards on the ground last weekend.

I don’t think the Roadrunners have the goods to pull the upset, but it could easily happen in this trap game. After an emotional win over Nebraska, Illinois could easily take its eye off the ball against a non-conference team they feel they might be above.

Over/Under

OVER 50.5 (-112) is the play here. The Illini offense showed a lot of promise last weekend hanging 30 on the visiting Cornhuskers. The Roadrunners of UTSA boast an underrated offensive unit with some big-time stars, and the Roadrunners allowed 25.7 PPG in 2020. We should easily see a total pushing the mid-50’s.

First Responder Bowl: Louisiana vs. UTSA odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Louisiana vs. UTSA SERVPRO First Responder Bowl sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The 17th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (9-1) and the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners (7-4) meet Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas for the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl. Below, we analyze the Louisiana-UTSA college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Louisiana vs. UTSA: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Louisiana -650 (bet $650 to win $100) | UTSA +425 (bet $100 to win $425)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Louisiana -13.5 (-115) | UTSA +13.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 55.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Louisiana vs. UTSA: Three things to know

  1. The Ragin’ Cajuns streak in with six straight wins since their only setback of the season, a 30-27 loss at home against unbeaten Coastal Carolina Oct. 14. They also enter on a 3-0 ATS run.
  2. UTSA RB Sincere McCormick posted 1,345 rushing yards, second in the nation to Iowa State’s Breece Hall (1,436 yards). McCormick also scored 11 touchdowns while posting a healthy 6.0 average yards per carry. He could find large chunks of real estate, as ULL’s rushing defense was just 84th in the nation with 180.9 yards per game allowed.
  3. Louisiana employs more of a two-headed monster, as RBs Elijah Mitchell went for 751 yards and seven scores and Trey Ragas posted 662 yards and nine touchdowns. QB Levi Lewis is also a dual threat, running for 310 yards and five scores while passing for 2,124 yards, 17 touchdowns and just seven picks.

Louisiana vs. UTSA: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Louisiana 38, UTSA 27

Money line (ML)

Louisiana (-650) is on a roll this season, and they’re 5-2 SU in bowl games all-time since bumping up to the FBS. Well, 3-2, technically, as two New Orleans Bowl wins were vacated during Mark Hudspeth’s reign in Lafayette. That bowl record includes a solid 27-17 win over Miami-Ohio in last season’s Lending Tree Bowl. Still, risking six-and-a-half times your potential return is a lot of cake to post up for not much value. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

UTSA +13.5 (-105) should be able to hang around in this game with McCormick rumbling for big yardage. QB Frank Harris is also a productive dual-threat option with 1,422 passing yards with 10 touchdowns, and another 443 yards and eight scores on the ground. The Roadrunners have the tools to test the Ragin’ Cajuns well into the second half.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 55.5 (-105) is the best play of all options in the First Responder Bowl. While the Under cashed in six of the past eight for Louisiana, the Over is 15-5 in their past 20 against non-conference foes. UTSA has the tools to hang with a high-scoring Louisiana offense.
