USC is coming off a 45-17 win over Fresno State while they have cruised to a 3-0 start and will be looking for their fourth straight tonight. As for Oregon State, they are coming off a 40-point win over Montana State to improve to 3-0, will they have enough in the tank to stay with the Trojans tonight?

Why USC Will Win

Nothing is slowing down this offense.

Caleb Williams is in total command, the running game stepped up against Fresno State – the balance was great in the 45-17 win – and so far it seems like the faucet gets turned on whenever it needs to.

It doesn’t always work this easily, but the Trojans rolled at will against the Bulldogs. Oregon State needed a late score to survive at Fresno 35-32.

The Beavers have a good enough offense to hit the USC defensive front hard, but the pass rush isn’t there. Don’t get any pressure on Williams, and he’ll do whatever he wants.

Why Oregon State Will Win

The offense is rolling.

There’s good balance, the running game is averaging five yards per carry, and Chance Nolan is connecting on the downfield passing game enough to open it up.

It’s going to be the ground attack, though, that has to take over.

USC is giving up 4.8 yards per carry and allowed Rice, Stanford, and Fresno State to rumble, but all three had to abandon what worked to try keeping up the pace.

What’s Going To Happen

USC’s defensive front might be having big problems against the run, but there’s no issue with the pass rush.

Oregon State’s offensive front has been great in pass protection, strong for the running game, and it’s going to have a terrific game. It’s not going to be enough.

The energy will be amazing, the team will be jacked, and it’ll be a fun first half. Then USC’s offense will wake up and take over halfway through the third quarter.

The defense that will get hit hard will make up for it with two late takeaways.

Just how healthy are the USC quarterbacks?

Kedon Slovis was back at practice – and, apparently, just fine – but he suffered a neck injury in the win over Washington State. In stepped Jaxson Dart, who ripped it up to crank up the production, but he suffered a knee injury and hasn’t been able to do much this week.

Oregon State has the running game in place after getting stronger over the last two games – wins over Hawaii and Idaho – for an offense that leads all Pac-12 teams in third down conversions.

The offensive line has been solid, the defense is generating a ton of plays in the backfield, and the run D has been statistically strong. It’s getting the job done, and USC isn’t running well enough to overcome the quarterback injuries – if that’s a problem.

Why USC Will Win

It almost seemed like USC became what it’s supposed to be as the Washington State game went on.

It’s been a weird run so far with the loss to Stanford and the firing of Clay Helton, but interim head coach Donte Williams might have relaxed things a little bit. The O turned it up several notches in the second half, the passing game rolled for close to 400 yards, and Oregon State has to be ready the explosiveness.

The Beaver secondary got hit by Hawaii for 366 yards and by Purdue for well over 300 yards – it’s going to get bombed on from the start, likely from a fired up Slovis who knows he needs a big performance with Dart looking so strong.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not a question of talent. Oregon is the one team in the Pac-12 that can match USC athletically. Now it’s just about the consistency, and the team might have turned a corner.

Oregon State is sneaky good – it could pull this off if the USC pass rush doesn’t show up and the D can’t come up with third down stops. That was the problem against Stanford, and the Beavers know how to move the chains.

It’s USC. It’ll start slow, come back in the second half, and it’ll make this more interesting than it needs to be.
