UFC on ESPN 9: Roosevelt Roberts vs. Brok Weaver odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 9 fight between Roosevelt Roberts and Brok Weaver, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

[jwplayer 4sSrvL2O]

Roosevelt Roberts and Brok Weaver tangle in a lightweight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN 9 – also known as Fight Night 176 – at the UFC’s Apex Facility in Las Vegas. The card kicks off Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

Roberts (9-1) is coming off a unanimous decision victory against Alexander Yakovlev last time out (Nov. 19, 2019). All three of Roberts’ fights at the UFC level have ended up going the distance, winning two of them. His ability in the clinch looks to be his ticket to stardom

Weaver (15-4) will be looking to fire out of the chute and rain blows down upon Roberts early and often. Weaver has a distinct advantage with 5.57 to 2.87 in the significant strikes landed per minute category, and 73.61 to 46.46 in the significant strikes-accuracy percentage department. The southpaw isn’t likely to be keen on going to the mat, as Roberts has won four of 10 career professional fights by submission.

Roberts (-358) is an overwhelming favorite over Weaver (+275) in a battle between inexperienced, yet very talented prospects about to climb the ladder in the lightweight division.

Weaver is a brawler, while Roberts appears to be a little more well-rounded. Taking Roberts straight up on the 2-way line is a lot of chalk. The most attractive bet on the board might be taking the NO (+135): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? prop, as Roberts can do good work on the mat, and Weaver has the potential to end the bout anytime with just one punch. Backing ROBERTS BY KO/TKO, DQ or SUBMISSION (+200) is also worth a roll of the dice.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Roberts (-358) to win returns a profit of just $2.79. A $10 bet of No (+135) on the fight going the distance pays a $13.50 return, and a $10 bet for Roberts to win by KO/TKO, DQ or Submission (+200) profits $20.

UFC on ESPN 9: Mackenzie Dern vs. Hannah Cifers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 9 fight between Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

[jwplayer 2ncGQ5Mg]

Mackenzie Dern and Hannah Cifers do battle in a women’s strawweight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN 9 – also known as Fight Night 176 – at the UFC’s Apex Facility in Las Vegas. The card kicks off Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

Dern (7-1) is a heavy favorite in this match against Cifers (10-4). Dern won her first seven professional fights before falling to Amanda Ribas last time out by unanimous decision Oct. 12. Two of Dern’s three fights at the UFC level have gone the distance, with a submission win over Amanda Cooper May 12, 2018 as her only fight in the UFC to finish inside the distance. While we haven’t seen it at the UFC level yet, Dern is deadly on the canvas, as four of her seven professional wins have come by submission, with the rear-naked choke as her specialty.

Cifers is coming off a Jan. 25 KO/TKO loss to Angela Hill. Two of Cifers’ four fights at the UFC level have finished inside the distance, falling in each bout by knockout. In 14 career professional fights she has never won via submission, but he has lost once, and that came via rear-naked choke. She’ll want to keep this fight upright to have any chance, as she has recorded 4.82 significant strikes landed per minute, and a 45.16 significant strike-accuracy percentage.

Mackenzie Dern vs. Hannah Cifers betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, May 28 at 6:15 a.m. ET.

Dern (-400) is the heavy favorite to win this one over Cifers (+305), and rightly so. Dern is the more well-rounded fighter, and it should be over quickly as long as she avoids the big blow from Cifers.

It would be worth a roll of the dice to take DERN TO WIN BY SUBMISSION (-106), as Cifers isn’t very good defensively on the ground. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to couple this with the NO (-213): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? prop, too.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Dern (-400) to win only returns a profit of $2.50. A $10 bet of No (-213) on the fight going the distance pays a $4.69 return, and a $10 bet for Dern to win by submission (-106) pays $9.43.

Point of interest: The price of pressure

The main event on ESPN features a fun welterweight affair between a former champ who is looking to get back in the win column and an aggressive up-and-comer who is hitting his stride in multiple ways.

An accomplished grappler who immersed himself into all facets of martial arts, [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] has steadily become a formidable threat on the feet.

Under the care of Henri Hooft, we have seen “Durinho” Burns build upon his pressuring sensibilities in the striking department. Whether he’s working off of his jab or his opponent’s, Burns always seems to have a heavy right hook chambered in the rear, as he typically looks to inch his way forward with offense that’s wired on a hair-trigger.

In his last matchup opposite Demian Maia, we saw Burns’ improved defense, as he displayed some nice head movement en route to slipping a punch and landing a slick left hook over the lead shoulder of his southpaw counterpart. Burns, who is a solid leg kicker in his own right, has also shown signs of improving his defensive awareness in regards to both checking and countering leg kicks thrown his way.

Nevertheless, leg kicks and counter crosses are still what has traditionally landed most on Burns, which means the Brazilian fighter will need to be on his best behavior if he means to pressure forward on fight night.

Enter [autotag]Tyron Woodley[/autotag].

A standout Mizzou wrestler, Woodley has always shown a knack for countering pressure coming his way with both takedowns and strikes since early on in his MMA career.

Making steady but consistent strides with his striking throughout the years, Woodley has gotten a lot of deserved miles for being a dangerous knockout threat on the feet. Though relying on it less frequently in recent parts of his career, the former champion possesses one of the fastest blitzes in the sport (running neck and neck with Yoel Romero, for my money).

Closing the distance at the drop of a dime, Woodley can accurately target his opponent’s head with crushing right hands that come in both straight and hooking fashions. And since making the trek to train more consistently with Duke Roufus in recent years, the St. Louis native has done a better job of attaching kicks to his combinations and moving more fluidly overall.

Still, Woodley ultimately seems to be a counter fighter at heart, a sensibility that seems to be a two-way street in regards to his perception. Tactically, the champion’s style of walking himself back toward the fence has served him well in the sense that he is the one who is dictating the exchanges, subtly allowing his opponents into his range.

The question, however, is will that approach be even riskier when fighting inside of a smaller octagon?

Regardless of any perceived risks, Woodley will still need to send messages to an oncoming Burns early if he means to avoid some sticky situations along the fence.

Next point of interest: Potential grappling entanglements

UFC on ESPN 9: Tyron Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 9 fight between Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

[jwplayer 4sSrvL2O]

Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns get together in a welterweight bout in the main event at UFC on ESPN 9 – also known as Fight Night 176 – at the UFC’s Apex Facility in Las Vegas. The card kicks off Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

The 38-year-old Woodley (19-4-1) holds a three-inch reach advantage which he hopes to use to keep Burns (18-3) at a distance. While Woodley can more than handle himself on the mat, the ground is where Burns holds a large advantage. Burns has a 2.39 to 1.21 takedown-average advantage, although Woodley edges him with a 41.18 to 38.98 takedown-accuracy percentage. Woodley has been champing at the bit to get back into the octagon after a unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman for the welterweight strap at UFC 235. So, Woodley will be fighting with a chip on his shoulder, which doesn’t bode well for Burns. Woodley has never lost consecutive bouts at any point of his mixed martial arts career, and he doesn’t plan to start now.

Burns, nicknamed “Durinho,” enters on a five-bout winning streak, including a KO/TKO win over Demian Maia March 14, 2020 at UFC Fight Night: Lee vs. Oliveira. Burns kicked off the winning streak with a unanimous decision win over Olivier Aubin-Mercier, and hasn’t lost since a KO/TKO setback against Dan Hooker at UFC 226 (July 7, 2018(. Three of Burns’ past five bouts have ended in favorable unanimous decisions, and he has a KO/TKO and submission win during the stretch, showing off his versatility. However, Woodley represents a huge step up in talent.

Tyron Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, May 28 at 8 a.m. ET.

Woodley (-176) is a strong favorite on the 2-way line, and rightly so vs.  Burns (+145). As mentioned, Woodley has never lost consecutive fights at any point of his illustrious career.

Now, how will the fight be won? We’re likely to see plenty of toe-to-toe action, and takedown attempts, but each of these guys have solid ground games, both offensively and defensively. Look for a long, drawn out fight with plenty of action, but a bout that will ultimately be decided by the judges. As such, betting DECISION (+115) on HOW WILL THE FIGHT FINISH? is a good wager. In addition, YES (+115): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a nice value as well.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Woodley (-176) to win returns a profit of $5.68. A $10 bet of Yes (+115) on the fight going the distance pays a $11.50 return, and betting on the fight to end on a Decision (+115), regardless of fight winner, fetches a $11.50 profit.

UFC on ESPN 9’s Brandon Royval promises all-action debut: ‘It’s gonna be a very fan-friendly fight’

At UFC on ESPN 9, Brandon Royval expects an action-packed fight against former title challenger Tim Elliott.

[autotag]Brandon Royval[/autotag] is expecting an action-packed scrap when he makes his octagon debut on Saturday night.

Former LFA flyweight champion Royval (10-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will step ito the UFC octagon for the first time when he takes on former 125-pound title challenger [autotag]Tim Elliott[/autotag] (15-10-1 MMA, 4-8 UFC), at UFC on ESPN 9 in Las Vegas.

“I’ve watched pretty much all of his fights especially in the UFC but yeah, I’ve done a lot of just watching him,” Royval told MMA Junkie. “Honestly, I’m a huge fan of him, too. As far as flyweights go, he’s a fan-friendly fighter too. He does good for our division. …  Everyone wants to see Tim Elliott fight, I feel like, so I just think all around I have a little bit the advantage because I watched way more video than he probably could have watched of me.”

The fights will be contested at the UFC Apex using the promotion’s slightly smaller 25-foot cage, which usually results in more action, especially with the constant movement of the flyweights.

And considering the fighting styles of both men, Royval says the fight looks sure to deliver plenty of action for the fans.

“I feel like Tim Elliott’s just a guy that moves forward and puts a lot of pressure on,” he said. “He’s exciting, he’s just gonna bring the action, so I can’t see a boring fight happening between us two at all. So I think it’s gonna be a very fan-friendly fight.”

Inside Nevada’s COVID-19 protocols for upcoming UFC shows

Take a look at some of the key protocols passed Wednesday by the Nevada Athletic Commission to all the UFC to hold upcoming shows.

The Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday unanimously approved protocols for combat sports events held in the state during the ongoing COVID-19 era.

The protocols, in place for events held without a live audience in attendance – which is likely to be the case for the foreseeable future – will be put to test almost immediately since the Las Vegas-based UFC will hold an event at its UFC Apex facility Saturday, as well as one next week on June 6.

According to the COVID-19 protocols document, which MMA Junkie obtained from the NAC, the commission admits “there is no mechanism to ensure competition is 100 percent free from COVID-19 infection. However, the protocols … will significantly mitigate the chance of COVID-19 infection in combat sports.”

Here are some of the key protocols outlined in the document (see it in full here):

  • All event personnel, right down to cleaning staff, must quarantine immediately after their COVID-19 tests. After their results come in, they must stay quarantined until the event’s conclusion. In this case, the UFC maintains the responsibility for knowing locations of all personnel.
  • The venue will be closed to the public and strict control will be maintained over who enters. Entering the venue will require: temperature monitoring, a questionnaire, oral fluid collection for PCR testing, and quarantine until test results come back.
  • Anyone who enters the facility must be given education from the CDC on the importance of safety measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This can take place through email or online web sessions.
  • Before entering the venue, all individuals will have to answer questions about their health and recent past whereabouts, including: Have you had a fever in the past 72 hours that was at or above 99.5 F? Have you come into contact with someone with COVID-19? If so, when? In the past two weeks, have you traveled to or from an area that is considered high risk, and/or been under a government-mandated quarantine period? In the past 72 hours, have you experienced any of the following symptoms: Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or cough, fever, headache chills, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, muscle pain, nasal congestion, runny nose, diarrhea, fatigue
  • The FDA-approved PCR testing method is preferred. The preference is for oral fluid testing kids. If none are available, “it is acceptable to use FDA-approved nasal swabs.”
  • If a person is thought to be potentially positive for a COVID-19 infection through the questionnaire, or revealed through a test, “the individual will remain in quarantine and an infectious disease expert will be consulted.”
  • All personnel on site must follow the state of Nevada’s social distancing guidelines – which includes wearing a mask at all times. Gloves are optional, but recommended.
  • Anyone who tests positive must seek immediate primary care, self-quarantine in the state of Nevada for 14 days, and will not be allowed to travel by air until cleared. Solo car travel may be permitted if the individual does not live in the state of Nevada. Air travel will only be permitted after the person is cleared by an NAC physician and has tested negative.
  • Persons who violate any of the sections of the protocols “will be subject to any and all disciplinary actions that can be brought against them by the NAC.”

Nevada Athletic Commission approves first Las Vegas-based UFC events since COVID-19 outbreak

Wednesday, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) approved the first mixed martial arts events since the COVID-19 outbreak.

MMA is back in Nevada.

Wednesday, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC), which oversees and regulates the state’s combat sports events, held its first monthly meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The meeting was held via conference call and lasted approximately 15 minutes, with all votes coming to unanimous decisions.

Among the decisions made, the NAC approved the first MMA events in its jurisdiction since March. The UFC, which has announced plans to hold events at the UFC Apex on Saturday and June 6, will be allowed to do so.

The NAC unanimously approved NAC COVID-19 protocols for events without the presence of a live audience, before unanimously approving the two UFC events and two Top Rank boxing events.

NAC executive director Bob Bennett said the commission has been working “hand in glove” with the UFC and “everything is moving forward.” He stressed the UFC’s protocols align with the new plan set forth by the NAC.

While it is unclear how many straight weeks the UFC plans on holding events at the Apex, the promotion has events planned for Saturday, June 6, June 13, June 20, and June 27. The latter three events were not discussed since they were not on Wednesday’s agenda.

The meeting was the first held by the NAC in more than two months. On March 14, the commission announced it had canceled all upcoming combat sports events through March 25 due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

[lawrence-related id=522198,522003,521919]

On March 23, the NAC announced the suspension of combat sports would be instituted indefinitely. The announcement coincided with Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak’s order to close all non-essential businesses, including Las Vegas casinos, to combat the spread of COVID-19.

The state of Nevada currently is in Phase 1 of its reopening plan, but is expected to move to Phase 2 on Friday. Gyms, places of worship, bars and casinos will be allowed to reopen.

UFC on ESPN 9’s Louis Smolka is comfortable, despite the chaos

New normal, no problem, says UFC bantamweight Louis Smolka ahead of his UFC on ESPN 9 bout with Casey Kenney.

[autotag]Louis Smolka[/autotag] is comfortable, despite the chaos.

Fighting Saturday at UFC on ESPN 9, fight week will be a bit different for Smolka (16-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC). He’ll have to undergo COVID-19 testing – twice. He’ll have to self-isolate and use social distancing, and the UFC will be limiting his interaction with people outside of his team.

While some of his UFC on ESPN 9 counterparts may experience culture shock, Smolka thinks the secluded nature of the week may play into his hand. In a sense, he’s used to it.

“It’s not any different to me, dude,” Smolka told MMA Junkie on Monday. “This is what I do every day. It doesn’t matter. We’re going to fight. Me and one dude are going to fight in a cage, whether the crowd is there or not, whether we’re isolated there or not. I isolate myself anyway on fight week.

“On fight day, what I’ll spend my time doing is cleaning the room. I’ll clean the hotel room and organize. I’m doing the entire week. … I’m just over there waiting. It’s kind of torturous in a sense, but it’s what works for me. It keeps me focused and dialed in. All the outside distractions, all this other stuff, I don’t think it’s going to affect me.”

[lawrence-related id=522205,522217,522163]

Smolka will compete on the preliminary portion of the card against former LFA flyweight champion Casey Kenney. The two fighters share the same manager, so Smolka was familiar with the name when it was offered. Smolka said has a lot of respect for his opponent.

“He’s done pretty well in the UFC,” Smolka said. “He’s fought at 135. He’s fought guys, his first two fights, the guys didn’t even make weight and he still won. I give that dude props, man. He’s a gamer. He’s about it. He’s a pro. He’s here. He’s real. He’s not here for the IG fame or anything. He’s here to fight. I give the dude props and I’m ready to go to war with him.”

Despite his respect for Kenney (13-2-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), Smolka is planning to finish the fight, and to do so in violent fashion.

“I’m going to hit him until he stops moving,” Smolka said. “I’m going to keep hitting him until he stops moving.”
