7 prospects the Browns should keep an eye on at the Senior Bowl

These players could be targets for the Browns in April’s draft.

The draft process begins in just a couple of weeks with the Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama. The Cleveland Browns will undoubtedly have their eyes on several players during practices and the game on February 4. The team needs to remake the defensive line outside of Myles Garrett and there will be plenty of players to study on the defensive line.

Mobile is another chance for players to showcase what they can do especially players from smaller schools going up against players from Power-Five schools. The Senior Bowl is the first major milestone toward the 2023 NFL Draft and no doubt will be intriguing to watch this year.

Here are some players that Browns fans should be watching in a couple of weeks.

Ronald Curry among Saints coaches selected for Senior Bowl coaching staff

Saints coach Ronald Curry will get an up-close look at this year’s draft prospects as the Senior Bowl’s National Team offensive coordinator, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

The Senior Bowl is right around the corner, and it’s a critical stepping-stone towards the 2023 draft as the foremost look at collegiate all-star players. This is one of the most important early scouting and interview opportunities for NFL teams like the New Orleans Saints who have consistently selected from the pool of players represented in Mobile, Ala. This year, they’ll get an even closer look with four assistant coaches named to the Senior Bowl coaching staff.

In the past, the Senior Bowl would choose their coaches by selecting an entire NFL staff. This year, they’ve changed their approach by selecting from talent nominated by NFL clubs. Here’s a little more detail from the Senior Bowl press release:

“Under a new arrangement to promote professional development, NFL Football Operations has implemented a “coach up” format where coordinators and assistant coaches are placed into elevated or different roles from the ones they currently hold with their respective clubs.  Head coaches and general managers from all non-playoff teams had the opportunity to nominate assistant coaches and those candidates were then selected by a group comprised of league office executives, representatives from the General Managers Advisory Committee, and Senior Bowl leadership.”

While not all coaching staff placements have been made public, the highlight for New Orleans will be passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry. Curry will serve as the National Team offensive coordinator in Mobile. The Saints have highlighted Curry’s trajectory multiple times and look to be setting him up on a path to offensive coordinator with their club or elsewhere. Curry’s coaching profile has continued to draw attention as he’s ascended the ranks in New Orleans.

Along with the additional three Saints coaches who will be named at a later time, Curry will help the Saints get an up close and personal look at some premiere talent in this year’s NFL draft class. Quarterbacks like BYU’s Jaren Hall, Fresno State’s Jake Haener and Max Duggan of TCU should be firmly in their sights. As should running backs like Tulane hometown product Tyjae Spears. But what is really exciting here is to see Curry’s profile continue to build. At the Senior Bowl they say “the draft starts in Mobile” and so too may the next step for Curry.

Tulane RB Tyjae Spears declares for 2023 NFL draft

Tulane running back Tyjae Spears has announced his intentions to declare for the 2023 NFL draft

One of the most explosive playmakers in college football is headed to the next level.

Tulane running back Tyjae Spears is declaring for the 2023 NFL draft, making his announcement via social media Monday evening.

Spears’ decision comes just hours after Spears rushed for 205 yards and four touchdowns in the Green Wave’s dramatic comeback win over USC in the Cotton Bowl Classic.

One of the more intriguing running back prospects in this year’s draft class, Spears finished his 2022 campaign with 1,581 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground, adding 256 yards and two more scores on 22 receptions.

Tulane Green Wave appreciation: Willie Fritz, Michael Pratt, Tyjae Spears were fantastic, deserve a salute

USC lost a heartbreaker to #Tulane, but let’s also credit @GreenWaveFB for a fantastic turnaround — in the #CottonBowl itself, and also from 2021. What an effort!

The USC Trojans won four games in 2021 and earned a trip to the Pac-12 title game and the Cotton Bowl in Lincoln Riley’s first year.

Even after the loss to Tulane, this year is still a step in the right direction for the USC program.

However, it is worth noting that Tulane’s turnaround was out of this world. In 2021, the Green Wave won just two games. Then, Willie Fritz and his team won 11 games and then stunned the Trojans in a 46-45 victory in the Cotton Bowl in one of the best games of the entire season.

Tulane earned a ton of appreciation after the win, and deservedly so.

Tulane RB Tyjae Spears hurdled his own teammate, escaped so many tackles on ridiculous 60-yard TD

Hurdle!

The Tulane Green Wave won the AAC championship game in style on Saturday.

In a stunning highlight, Tulane running back Tyjae Spears scrambled for 60 yards for a hard-earned touchdown. On the play, Spears broke multiple tackles and read the field beautifully to reach the end zone.

However, the best part of the play wasn’t even the touchdown itself. Spears had to hurdle his own teammate, wideout Lawrence Keys III, on the play en route to the score.

A friendly fire hurdle hasn’t ever really been common in football. However, Spears probably knew his teammate wouldn’t mind being hurdled if it got the Green Wave six on the scoreboard.

Tulane’s 45-28 victory over UCF helped cement what’s been a spectacular season for the Green Wave.

Bowl-bound, No. 18 Tulane will now look to hurdle any team that it might face off against as it vies for a new trophy to add to its cabinet of accomplishments.
