Disney+ vs. Netflix: Which is the best streaming service?

Breaking down everything you need to know about the Disney+ vs. Netflix debate, including which one is better for sports fans.

Today, Disney+ launched to the delight of people who love Star Wars, Marvel, and anyone with small children. Disney’s new standalone streaming service gives users access to pretty much their entire back catalog, along with National Geographic, as well as the aforementioned blockbuster series they’ve purchased.

It’s also got a lot of people asking: How does it compare to the existing streaming services?

In this article we’ll look at the Disney+ vs. Netflix debate. We’ll look at what each offers, and compare price and interface. We’ll give a final verdict for people out there, and have a special analysis for sports fans.

Let’s get to it.

Which has better offerings?

Right now, by a nose, we have to give it to Netflix. Netflix has spent aggressively on original content, and has also invested in a lot of classic films

Disney+ comes out of the gate in second place, already surpassing Hulu. It’s got the Disney back catalogue, as well as everything from the Marvel cinematic universe, Star Wars, and National Geographic. This does leave blind spots — any movies that are older and outside of a few major franchises are basically going to be kids’ movies, and their TV offerings can’t get close to Netflix yet. But this is a strong start.

As for other things out there: Hulu is a fine option. It’s got some interesting TV shows and gets TV offerings much quicker than Netflix does. And as we’ll share in a second, you can actually get it with Disney+, which may be the best way to go.

Price?

Disney+ is available for $6.99 a month to start, with an annual option for $69.99. This is considerably less than Netflix’s current cost of $12.99 a month, and will be the difference maker for a lot of people.

And Disney+ also came over the top with another option: You can have Disney+, Hulu, AND ESPN+ all for $12.99. I already pay for ESPN+ (you can read our review of ESPN+ here), so for me, this option is a no-brainer.

Ease of use?

We haven’t had too much time to play around with Disney+ yet, but the format seems intuitive and nice to use. Netflix has had years to perfect the way they share content with you, and their search option works great, but Netflix also has an annoying feature where it auto-loads previews and starts playing video when you’re just trying to browse, which drives me nuts.

So I guess we’ll give it to Disney+ for now.

Final verdict

If you have to choose between one, I think I give the slight edge to Disney+, with a big caveat — if you don’t have small children and aren’t a huge comic book film fan, you might be frustrated with what they offer at first. Netflix has more original programming, and much better TV offerings. Hulu I don’t think compares to either, but as a tack-on to Disney+, might well be worth it.

Plus, if you love sports, the Disney+ / Hulu / ESPN+ deal is a ton of great content and live sports programming for the same cost you’re paying for Netflix now.

Today’s the day: Everything you need to know about Disney+

Everything you need to know to get using the new Disney+ platform, including how to stream, price, and more.

Today is the day. Disney is opening up its vault with a new streaming service called Disney+. It begins today, November 12, and is available in the United States, Canada, and Netherlands to start.

For fans of Disney, Star Wars, National Geographic, Marvel, ESPN … these are exciting times. Disney has gone and made a big old conglomerate of content, and they’re now offering it with a standalone streaming service that’s pretty affordable compared to other options out on the market.

So let’s go through it. Let’s find out what all the fuss is about, and show you how to download Disney+ if you see fit.

What is Disney+?

Disney+ is a new standalone streaming service from Disney. It features almost 500 movies and over 7,500 episodes of television, per Disney.

What does Disney+ offer?

Yes, you will be getting all the classic Disney films you know and love. But Disney also owns Marvel, and Star Wars, and National Geographic, so you’re getting all of that good stuff, too. They’re also rolling out a new standalone Star Wars chapter: The Mandalorian, which for many Star Wars nuts will be worth the price of admission alone.

What does Disney+ cost?

Disney+ costs $6.99 a month, or you can get a year subscription for $69.99. They also have a bundle option where you can get ESPN+ and Hulu (with ads) for $12.99 a month.

How do I start using Disney+?

Disney+ is available for download on most major streaming devices. You can sign up and start watching on your laptop right now at disneyplus.com.

It’s also available on the following devices to start: Amazon FireTV and FireOSApple iOS and Apple TVAndroid/Chromecast, RokuXbox OnePS4, LG webOS smart TVs and Samsung Smart TV.

Week 4 of the NBA season continues on Monday with a slate that’s highlighted by an emotional reunion of the defending champions with the man that delivered them the Larry O’Brien trophy in what should be a fantastic matchup at the Staples Center.

Kawhi Leonard. This is the man everyone wants to watch in the NBA this season, and his load management has led to some groans by those who just love to see the best player in the league do the things that led to him winning a championship last June and the Finals MVP. Leonard did it for the Toronto Raptors, who come to Staples Center to play the Clippers in what will most likely be the first meeting between player and team — if Kawhi doesn’t sit this one out.

The Raptors will be playing in the second night of a back-to-back at Staples after an exciting 113-104 win against the Lakers on Sunday night. Pascal Siakam has made the jump to superstar, OG Anunoby has done well in Leonard’s old spot in the lineup, and the champions are playing like it so far. It will be an awesome atmosphere in Los Angeles and expect Leonard to be excited to see his former teammates for the first time since signing with the Clippers.

Mavericks vs. Celtics Live Stream, NBA Week 4 Schedule, TV Channel, Start Time, How to Watch

Watch Mavericks vs. Celtics Live Online.

Two talented teams meet in Boston Monday when Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks visit TD Garden to take on the surging Celtics. While it’s certainly way too early to proclaim anything wild, at the rate these two teams have opened the season, we could possibly be seeing an NBA Finals preview.

The Mavs have enjoyed a bright start to the season, opening with a very nice 6-3 record. The story of their opening stretch has to be the play of second-year phenom Luka Doncic. The Slovenian guard is percentage points away from averaging a triple-double through nine games this season. With 28.1 PPG, 10.4 RPG and 9.2 APG to his name, the youngster is becoming one of the must-see names in the entire league. If he continues on this pace, there’s a strong chance he’ll be mentioned heavily when the talk of NBA MVP heats up later in the season. Doncic put up 24 points and 14 rebounds in a 138-122 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

While Dallas has impressed early on, the Celtics are only one of two teams with just one loss so far this season. A 7-1 start has to be extremely satisfying for Boston fans after losing their most high-profile player, Kyrie Irving, via free agency in the offseason. A 135-115 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday will do nothing to quell their enthusiasm. Jalen Brown’s 30 points along with Kemba Walker’s 26-point effort led the way for the C’s. However, it wasn’t all good news. Gordon Hayward’s unfortunate injury streak continued in the game, fracturing his hand in the win. It’s not yet known how long he’ll be out for, but he’ll be sorely missed. Hayward averaged 20.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists through seven games.

Kayak fisherman nearly toppled by 200-pound alligator gar

A kayak fisherman came close to being tipped over by the 200-pound alligator gar he battled for 40 minutes in a south Texas river.

A kayak fisherman in south Texas came close to being tipped over by the 200-pound alligator gar he battled for 40 minutes before paddling one-handed to shore and landing the prehistoric fish.

The 7-foot alligator gar was the biggest Chris Hernandez had ever caught and it was almost too much to handle.

Hernandez told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors he was fishing a river on the outskirts of his hometown of Benito when he landed the alligator gar last week.

At one point, it became a bit scary when the fish slammed his kayak with its tail.

“It was just a quick flip from the tail that hit my yak causing my yak to shake back and forth,” Hernandez told For The Win Outdoors. “If my yak would’ve tilted a couple more inches, it would’ve took in water.

“At one point my rod was halfway in the water while the gar was taking line. My upper body was [so] tired that I thought I was going to lose my rod to this dinosaur of a gar.”

Hernandez told MySanAntonio the fish “was dragging me all over the river.”

Since there was no way he was going to pull the fish onto his kayak, Hernandez used one hand to paddle to shore as he held on to his fishing rod. A friend helped him through branches on the bank so he could to land the gar.

“This was an awesome experience and an awesome joy ride on the yak,” Hernandez wrote on his Facebook page. “Man, the heart was really pumping.”

Alligator gar are often referred to as “living fossils” because scientists can trace them back 100 million years in the fossil record, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They can grow up to 10 feet and 350 pounds.

Hernandez is probably lucky not to have hooked one that big.
