Gators gymnast Trinity Thomas earns SEC Athlete of the Year award

Florida gymnastics star student-athlete Trinity Thomas is the 2022-23 Roy F. Kramer Southeastern Conference Female Athlete of the Year.

Florida gymnastics star student-athlete [autotag]Trinity Thomas[/autotag] is the 2022-23 Roy F. Kramer Southeastern Conference Female Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office on Thursday.

The graduate student, along with LSU Tigers baseball standout Dylan Crews, were selected by a vote of the league’s athletics directors for the female and male categories, respectively. Her most recent accolade makes her the 15th Gator to earn the distinction which leads the conference all-time.

Thomas is the seventh SEC Female Athlete of the Year recipient and the first since gymnast Bridget Sloan and UF softball players Lauren Haeger (2015) and Hannah Rogers (2014) won in consecutive seasons. Florida’s last two SEC Male Athlete of the Year awards came in back-to-back seasons from swimmer Caeleb Dressel (2018) and track and field standout Grant Holloway (2019), according to FloridaGators.com.

Prior to the announcement, the now-volunteer assistant coach with the team made known her intention to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. She will continue to work out with the team as she earns her second master’s degree so it looks like Florida’s greatest gymnast will be sticking around in Gainesville for a few more years.

Trinity Thomas plans on participating in 2024 Paris Olympics

Trinity Thomas announced on Wednesday her intent to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Trinity Thomas, who recently transitioned from student-athlete to student-assistant for Florida’s gymnastics team, announced on Wednesday her intent to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 22-year-old made a decision that was far from a hasty one. After dealing with ankle issues that prevented her from participating in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the talented student-athlete from York, Pennsylvania, returned in 2022 and was named the NCAA champion last season.

Thomas, who is arguably the best gymnast to ever wear the Orange and Blue, stepped away from the sport after drilling the final vault of her collegiate career at the national championships in April, the one that gave her a record-tying 28 perfect 10s.

But then she returned as a volunteer assistant coach for the team while she worked on her master’s degree in health education and behavior. Now, after a calf injury that limited her contributions in the NCAA Championships this spring, it appears she has a renewed drive to make it to the highest level of the sport.

“It’s one more year of gymnastics,” Thomas told the AP Press on Wednesday. “I love gymnastics. It can be as big or as small as I want it to be. I still have fuel in the tank, so let’s see how much.”

Thomas is now working on a second master’s degree — this time in entrepreneurship — as she grinds out what is likely her last chance to earn Olympic immortality. And she has 13 months to reach that pinnacle once again.

“You don’t have to do eight hours in the gym to be great,” Thomas said. “What you have to do is take care of your body so that it’s going to work for you years down the road.

“I’m not really worried about the thing at the end of the tunnel,” Thomas added. “I’m worried about doing it one step at a time and building on the foundation I have now.”

What to know before LSU gymnastics competes for national title

Here are a few things to know before the NCAA championships.

For the ninth time in program history, LSU gymnastics is competing for a national title.

LSU scored a 197.145 in the semis and advanced along with Florida in Session 1. From Session 2, Utah and Oklahoma advanced to the NCAA Championship.

This was a year with plenty of ups and downs for LSU. The team was never completely healthy and was streaky. Yet, in spite of that, it will get to play for it all on Saturday.

LSU is led by head coach [autotag]Jay Clark[/autotag], who took over for legend [autotag]D.D. Breaux[/autotag] in 2020.

Here are the storylines to watch as LSU competes on the sport’s biggest stage.

Florida gymnastics advances to Sunday’s Regional Final, Trinity Thomas injured

The Gators had their best athlete go down with an injury but still pulled off the big W.

The second-ranked Florida gymnastics team continued its postseason run on Friday with a win in the semifinal round at Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center to advance to the Regional Finals on Sunday. They join the Arizona State Sun Devils, California Bears and Michigan State Spartans in a battle to whittle the region down to just two programs in the bracket that will go on to compete in the 2023 NCAA women’s gymnastics championships held at Dickies Arena in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Unfortunately, the Orange and Blue lost its top athlete, [autotag]Trinity Thomas[/autotag], on Friday to a right lower leg injury, which prevented her from competing in the final three events. There have yet to be any further updates on her condition as of the time of publication, however, that did not dampen the moment for the team too much.

“The Gators get to dance again,” head coach Jenny Rowland offered after the win. “The Gators get to do gymnastics again. The Gators have another opportunity to compete for each other again. That is something we were focusing on today. Control what we can control and I think the Gators did a great job. There was a little adversity tonight. However, I told them they handled it very gracefully, with calmness and confidence. I’m proud of all of them.”

The Gators return to the floor inside the Petersen Events Center on Sunday and can be watched on the ESPN+ streaming service starting at 5 p.m. EDT.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida gymnastics Leanne Wong’s sophomore season

Get a gander at one of Florida’s best gymnasts this season.

Florida’s gymnastics program is coming off yet another spectacular season as the team makes another deep run in the NCAA championships. The Gators have benefitted from a roster chock full of talent, including season award-winners [autotag]Trinity Thomas[/autotag] and [autotag]Kayla DiCello[/autotag].

However, the squad would not be where it is today if not for the efforts of sophomore [autotag]Leanne Wong, [/autotag]who put together an impressive campaign in 2023 that included four perfect 10s. She managed to score 10.0 twice in a meet two times this year, including a double against the Auburn Tigers that made her first in the nation for the second consecutive season to earn a perfect score on uneven bars.

Wong earned three Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association regular-season All-America honors, making the first team for all-around and uneven bars and the second team for the balance beam event. She repeated as the SEC beam champion while sharing second in uneven bars, earning her inclusion on the All-SEC team.

Take a look below at highlights Leanne Wong’s standout sophomore season with the Orange and Blue.

Check out some highlights from Florida gymnastic’s SEC Freshman of the Year award winner.

The Southeastern Conference announced its gymnastics awards on Wednesday in which two Gators were named. One of those standout gymnasts was [autotag]Kayla DiCello[/autotag] who earned the SEC’s Freshman of the Year honor after a spectacular season to open up her collegiate career.

DiCello was the top freshman all-arounder at SEC Championships, placing sixth overall and was one of five freshmen to earn 2023 All-SEC honors in 2023. She was the nation’s first freshman to earn a perfect 10 — which came on the uneven bars against the Missouri Tigers — while setting the league record with eight total and six consecutive SEC Freshmen of the Week awards.

She is the 10th member of Florida’s gymnastics program to be voted SEC Freshman of the Year and the first since [autotag]Trinity Thomas[/autotag] earned the accolade in 2019. Take a look below at some highlights from DiCello’s award-winning season, which is hopefully the first of many for the Orange and Blue.
