Breaking down Dolphins WR Trent Sherfield’s new contract

Nearly half of the contract is guaranteed.

The Miami Dolphins have made a number of moves this offseason, including trading for All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and landing the top free agent on the market, left tackle Terron Armstead.

With all of the larger transactions that the Dolphins have made, some of the smaller ones quickly came in and out of the minds of fans. One of those moves may have been the signing of former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Trent Sherfield.

Sherfield, 26, spent just one season with new Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel in San Francisco and decided he had to follow him to Miami. In 2021, he recorded nine receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown, providing some efforts on special teams as well.

The contract that Sherfield signed is a one-year deal that’s worth roughly $1.19 million. It has a $1.035 million base salary, $350,000, of which, is guaranteed. He also received a $152,500 signing bonus for the year as well. According to Over the Cap, his total cap hit for 2022 is about $1.048 million.

With the additions of both Hill and Cedrick Wilson Jr. to the receiver room this offseason as well, Sherfield would likely figure to be the fifth receiver on the depth chart, at best. With just over $500,000 in guaranteed money, it wouldn’t be insane if Sherfield didn’t make the team.

However, depth and special teams work are valuable, and there’s always the chance that the Dolphins end up trading DeVante Parker, moving Sherfield up to the fourth receiver.
