Urban Meyer’s top-five running backs for 2020 CFB season

Urban Meyer ranks the top-five running backs for the 2020 college football season.

Legendary college football coach Urban Meyer recently named his top-five running backs for the 2020 college football season while speaking with the Big Noon Kickoff crew.

With Jonathan Taylor, D’Andre Swift, J.K. Dobbins and Clyde Edwards-Helaire off to the NFL, it opens the door for the next wave of great running backs to make a name for themselves.

And with those guys gone, here are Meyer’s top-five running backs for the 2020 season, a list which includes Georgia’s Zamir White.

  1. Oklahoma State’s Chubb Hubbard (2019: 2,094 yards, 21 TDs)
  2. Clemson’s Travis Etienne (2019: 1,614 yards, 19 TDs — 432 receiving yards, 4 TDs)
  3. Alabama’s Najee Harris (2019: 1,224 yards, 13 TDs — 304 receiving yards, 7 TDs)
  4. Georgia’s Zamir White (2019: 408 rushing yards, 3 TDs on 78 carries)
  5. Ohio State’s Trey Sermon (385 yards, 4 TDs on 54 carries)

Redshirt sophomore Zamir White is ready to take college football by storm in 2020. The former No. 1 ranked running back out of Laurinburg, North Carolina in the class of 2018, White’s been dealt a tough hand. He tore his ACL twice within the calendar year, but was able to perform well last season on limited opportunities. He turned 78 carries into 408 yards with an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

Eagles select All-American RB from Clemson in way-too-early 2021 mock draft

Eagles select Travis Etienne in Bleacher Report’s way-too-early 2021 mock draft

The Philadelphia Eagles covet Miles Sanders and plan on turning him into one of the top young running backs in the NFL. Even with Sanders’ unique abilities as a running back, the Eagles love the committee approach and an All-American from Clemson could make things interesting next spring.

In a way-too-early 2021 mock draft from Bleacher Report, Clemson star running back Travis Etienne falls in the Eagles lap at pick No. 21 after he decided to forgo the 2020 draft and return to school.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

It could allow the Eagles to have a lethal pairing at running back while taking advantage of both their skillsets on low-cost deals.

As a Sophmore on the Tigers 2018 National Championship team, Etienne ran for 1,658 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Last season as a Junior, Etienne was even better as an overall back, finishing with 1,614 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground and also catching 37 passes for 432 yards and four touchdowns, all career highs.

Notre Dame/Clemson Line Update After Ross Injury

Justyn Ross’s injury certainly won’t help Clemson in 2020 as they contend for another national title. How does it effect their odds vs ND?

Yesterday we received news that Clemson star receiver and potential first round NFL Draft pick Justyn Ross won’t play in 2020 due to a congenital fusion that will require surgery and leave his future in football very much in jeopardy.

Obviously the sad news of this is the star player possibly not realizing his full potential on the football field all because of something he has no control whatsoever about.

I was curious what the odds-makers thought about the injury to Ross and if it changed the way Clemson was viewed at all.

Back when we looked over Notre Dame’s odds in seven games listed by BetMGM in April the Irish were a 7.5 point underdog against Clemson.

Checking back today we see that, well, not a lot has changed in that department whatsoever as Clemson is still listed as a 7.5 point favorite for the November 7 showdown at Notre Dame Stadium.

Odds via BetMGM. Access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated June 2 at 6:15 p.m. ET.

If you look at where Notre Dame has the biggest questions on defense you’d think this may matter a little bit more considering it’s a secondary that comes with virtually no experience playing together.  However, if the Notre Dame front seven is unable to to take care of business up front it could just be a Travis Etienne show.

Shocker – Star Back Travis Etienne Returning to Clemson

Etienne is nothing short of a superstar in the college game as anyone who has watched Clemson is recent memory can attest.

It’s not a common thing these days to see star running backs stay four years in college if they’re seen as potential first or second day NFL Draft picks.

However, that will indeed be the case for one of the best in the game as Clemson running back Travis Etienne has announced he is returning Clemson for his senior season in 2020.

It’s certainly not unheard of but I wasn’t expecting this news today.

Etienne is nothing short of a superstar in the college game as anyone who has watched Clemson recently memory can attest.

In three years the Tigers running back has run for 4038 yards and 56 touchdowns while pulling in 54 receptions for 618 more yards and six more scores.

1614 of those rush yards and 19 rushing touchdowns came last season.

Etienne and the Clemson Tigers will enter 2020 as the number-one team in the nation barring something completely unseen and make just their second-ever trip to Notre Dame Stadium this November 7.

Clemson RB Travis Etienne returning for 2020 season

Top running back is heading back to school.

In one of the more surprising announcements to come out of the underclassmen declaration process, Clemson running back Travis Etienne has announced that he will forgo the 2020 NFL draft and return to school for his senior year.

Etienne has been one of the best backs in the nation for the past two years, having rushed for 3,272 yards and a whopping 43 touchdowns on the ground over the past two seasons, rushing for a 7.9 yards-per-carry average in the process. Coming off of a loss in the national championship to LSU, he will look to help lead Clemson to their second championship win in three years.

This move serves as a big blow to the 2020 running back class, one that has already seen a few notable names decide to return to school. Etienne joins the likes of Alabama’s Najee’ Harris, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard and Mississippi State’s Kylin Hill as underclass running backs who have decided to forgo this year’s draft.

7 National Championship game players Jets could take with their first 2 picks

Tee Higgins and Justin Jefferson are among seven players from the National Championship game that the Jets could take in the 1st two rounds.

The Jets, like every other team, were keeping a close eye on LSU’s 42-25 victory over Clemson in Monday night’s National Championship game.

The game provided a chance to take in draft-eligible players that should be on the Jets’ radar. Among those players are potential No. 1 wide receivers, future starting running backs, sideline to sideline linebackers and shutdown cornerbacks that New York could target in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL draft.

With that said, here are seven College Football Playoff National Championship game players that the Jets should consider in April.

Clemson: WR Tee Higgins

(Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports)

If the Jets prioritize a wide receiver in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, it’s likely because there has been a run on offensive linemen before they pick at No. 11.

With Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy and Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb likely off the board within the top-10, that leaves Clemson’s Tee Higgins as a viable option if the Jets elect to stay at No. 11 or trade down and stock up on draft capital.

In Monday’s National Championship, Higgins wasn’t a major factor in the passing game, but his 36-yard rushing touchdown kept Clemson alive in the first half.

His basketball background surely shows in the way he plays wide receiver. Higgins is big, tall and long-bodied, standing at 6-foot-4. He has an outstanding catch radius with the ability to make impressive catches in tight coverage.

Higgins projects as the type of big body wide receiver that Sam Darnold has been lacking and could replace Robby Anderson as the Jets’ top target on the outside.

CFB National Championship: 4 matchups to watch between top Saints draft prospects

The Saints have many top 2020 NFL Draft prospects to watch when LSU kicks off against Clemson in the CFB Playoff National Championship game.

[jwplayer xLLTdhTU-ThvAeFxT]

We’re hours away from the College Football Playoff National Championship game between the LSU Tigers and the Clemson Tigers, and as luck would have it, the game will be played in the New Orleans Saints’ home stadium — the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

That presents a great opportunity for Saints shot-callers like coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis, and scouting director Jeff Ireland to see some of the 2020 NFL Draft’s best prospects perform live in such a high-pressure situation. That doesn’t mean the Saints will draft anyone who plays in this game; but it does give these soon-to-be rookies a shot at making a memorable first impression.

Here are four matchups we’ll be watching closely:

When LSU has the ball

WR Justin Jefferson vs. CB A.J. Terrell

Jefferson went off against Oklahoma in the semifinals, posting 227 yards and catching four touchdown passes, but he’ll face a serious challenge in Terrell. According to Pro Football Focus charting, Terrell hasn’t allowed more than 60 yards in a game all season, and has surrendered just 14 completed passes into his coverage. That’s a natural collision point where both teams will be trying to compete with strength versus strength.

Either of these players would be huge additions for the Saints, but Jefferson’s success in a similar scheme has to be enticing. He excels at finding the open spaces within zone coverage, just like past Saints success stories like Marques Colston and Willie Snead once did. But Jefferson has better size and agility, and more upside, than any of those other potential predecessors.

TE Thaddeus Moss vs. LB/S Isaiah Simmons

Moss is an enthusiastic blocker and a fearless pass-catcher, even if he’s been more of an afterthought in the passing game than a featured piece (his 42 receptions rank fifth-most). Jared Cook is entering the final season of his two-year Saints contract, and the Saints struggled to adjust when blocking tight end Josh Hill missed time with a concussion. It’s easy to see Moss taking a year to learn the ropes as the third tight end before the Saints unleash him the next season, though he still has a year of college eligibility left as a redshirt junior.

Simmons would give the Saints rare versatility in the back seven, especially if paired with C.J. Gardner-Johnson. PFF graded him well at every position he played (which ranged from weakside linebacker to strong and free safety), so it’s easy to see the Saints disguising their coverage by trotting out Simmons alongside the equally-versatile Gardner-Johnson. However, with multiple starting linebackers returning from injuries (Alex Anzalone and Kiko Alonso), it might be easier to slot Simmons in as a day-one starter at the second level.

When Clemson has the ball

WR Tee Higgins vs. CB Kristian Fulton

Higgins has steadily improved at the college level from one year to the next, and now he’s seen as one of the best route runners in the country. He’s also one of the best at catching the ball when it’s sent his way, even when covered tightly by opposing defensive backs. Fulton will challenge him more than anyone else he’s faced, however, as there are few cornerbacks better in press coverage. But Higgins doesn’t need much space to break a tackle and take off at a sprint after the catch.

Just like with the matchup between Jefferson and Terrell, the Saints are short-handed at both wide receiver and cornerback going into 2020. Michael Thomas turned in a one-man show in the passing game and could benefit from some real help. The only cornerbacks the Saints have under contract next season are Marshon Lattimore, Janoris Jenkins, and Patrick Robinson.

RB Travis Etienne vs. S Grant Delpit

Delpit has a great reputation as one of the country’s best safeties — as seen by him winning the Jim Thorpe Award — and there aren’t many players who can run with him in pass coverage. But there’s a serious flaw in his game as a tackler, with PFF crediting him a sky-high 27% whiff rate on tackle attempts. Etienne will punish him and the rest of the LSU defense should Delpit slip and miss when he has a chance to bring the runner down; Etienne led FBS in both yards gained after contact per attempt (5.2) and tackles broken per attempt (.45).

Every team can use more defensive backs, but the Saints secondary is in a tough spot with starting strong safety Vonn Bell headed for free agency. Delpit could be a good replacement if he’s available at their draft slot. Also, Alvin Kamara has just one year left on his contract, and he turned in a disappointing performance last season. Etienne looks like a natural fit should the Saints plan to move on.

Potential Bills prospects to watch in National Championship

Buffalo Bills prospect watch for 2020 National Championship Game.

The National Championship Game in college football will take place on Monday. Unfortunately the Bills won’t be in the AFC Championship next weekend, so offseason mode is upon us.

Could there be some future Bills players on the field?

Here are some prospects to watch who could be on Buffalo’s radar at the 2020 NFL draft:

LSU Tigers wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Credit: Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

WR Justin Jefferson, LSU

Wide receiver is going to be a very talked about position in regard to the Bills during the pre-draft process. Buffalo had successful years from John Brown and Cole Beasley in 2019, but could certainly stand to add more in their wideout room.

Justin Jefferson could be a strong prospect on Buffalo’s radar in the second or third round. The 2020 receiver draft class is considered by many as a deep class, so the Bills could potentially get a first-round talent in the second round. Could that guy be Jefferson?

Here’s how Draft Wire breaks down Jefferson’s game:

As much fun as Joe Burrow has been this season for the Tigers, Justin Jefferson has been a big beneficiary of that stellar play. Not that Burrow is the only reason for the success, Jefferson has given opposing corners fits all season long. His double-moves down the field have created so many big plays for the Tigers. His size and explosiveness translates well to the next level, he has the potential to be a playmaker in the NFL.

EDGE K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU

The Bills have a strong defense under Sean McDermott, but the pass rush can stand to improve. Jordan Phillips on the interior of the defensive line was effective with 9.5 sacks last season, but he’s a free agent and you’d really like to get more production from the defensive end spots.

Chaisson could be a guy in play for the Bills in the first round of the draft. Considering Shaq Lawson is also a free agent and Trent Murphy could be a cut causality, Chaisson could certainly make some sense.

Here’s how Draft Wire breaks down his game:

Chaisson is an absolute freak coming off the weakside of the offensive line. He has the bend that scouts will salivate over and the explosiveness to make him a handful at the next level. He has all the intangibles to be similar to another former Tiger, Danielle Hunter. He can play in both a 4-3 and 3-4 alignment without suffering any coverage ability if needed. His relentless motor and athleticism sets him apart from most edge rushers. Once he learns to use his hands with better technique, watch out.

Derrick Henry in free agency: What sort of contract should he expect?

The former Alabama rusher is set to become a free agent this spring, so what should the Titans pay him?

It doesn’t seem like that long ago when Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry was the subject on trade talks — on more than just one occasion.

That all seems preposterous now, as Henry finished out the season with the NFL’s rushing title over the Cleveland Browns’ Nick Chubb, and is arguably the most key component of a Titans offense that has flipped the script and found a great amount of success this year.

The former Alabama rusher is set to become a free agent this spring, so what should the Titans pay him?

Giving him a contract with the big bucks on a multi-year deal may not be the best option for Tennessee, but it would probably serve them well to franchise tag him and extend quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s deal to keep him in Nashville for at least a couple more years.

[lawrence-related id=24222]

Regardless, after the success he’s had on the 2019 season where he’s racked up 1,917 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns between the regular season and the postseason, we can expect to see the Titans significantly up Henry’s pay this offseason.

It will be interesting to see how long Henry plays at the level he’s playing at right now, and this will be something the Titans should consider ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft with top prospects like Georgia’s D’Andre Swift, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor and Clemson’s Travis Etienne available to eventually take Henry’s place further on down the line.

Henry and the Titans will face the Kansas City Chiefs next in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium at 2:05 p.m. CST on Sunday.

2020 NFL draft: Top prospects to watch in National Championship Game

Monday night’s national title showdown between LSU and Clemson is loaded with top prospects for the 2020 NFL draft

This coming Monday all eyes will be on the National Championship Game in New Orleans, Louisiana. While both teams are playing for college football immortality, for select players it goes beyond their final game in a college uniform.

There will be plenty NFL scouts in attendance as they get one final opportunity to put their notes together in a game before the offseason bowl games, combines and pro day workouts.

LSU TIGERS

QB Joe Burrow

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

At this point it seems like a foregone conclusion that Burrow will be the number one overall selection at this point. His Heisman season put him on the map and with the Cincinnati Bengals likely done with the Andy Dalton era all but over, look for Burrow to take off one tigers jersey and trade it for one in orange and black.
