Akshay Bhatia is considering some interesting equipment changes as he plays in his first Tour Championship this week at East Lake Golf Club. These include adding a mini driver to his bag and using a new golf ball.

According to an article written by Andrew Tursky for GolfWRX and PGATour.com, Bhatia, who will start the opening round at 2 under, eight shots behind Scottie Scheffler, plans to add a Callaway Ai Smoke Paradym Ti340 Mini Driver to his bag.

“I curve it a lot. I try to achieve as lot of curve with the driver, so any time I have restricted start lines, I can draw a driver,” Bhatia said. “But if I have this mini driver, I can turn it a lot easier, then it’s a nice option.”

Bhatia said that he can hit his 19-degree Callaway Apex UW about 260 yards off the tee, but his 3-wood can be erratic.

“(A) 3-wood for me can either be really good, or I can hit it off the heel one day, or I can get a hot pull. It’s just very inconsistent for me,” he said. “So, the mini driver gives me more options. It’s faster, but it spins a little more, so the consistency of the ball flight is tighter, and that’s what I need.”

The Callaway Ai Smoke Paradym Ti340 Mini Driver Bhatia may put into play has 13.5 degrees of loft, similar to a strong-lofted 3-wood. However, while most 3-woods for elite golfers have a volume in the neighborhood of 180-200 cubic centimeters, Bhatia’s mini driver has 340 cubic centimeters. That makes it about 70 percent larger than many 3-woods but 26 percent smaller than a typical 460-cubic-centimeter driver.

The Ai Smoke Paradym Ti340 Mini also comes standard at 43.75 inches in length, which is about 1.5 to 2 inches shorter than most modern drivers. For many elite golfers, the combination of a shorter shaft and smaller head can make it easier to hit a draw instead of a fade, which appears to be the appeal of the mini driver for Bhatia.

While it is not uncommon for pros to make course-specific changes to the clubs in their bag, one piece of gear Bhatia plans to change is rarely tinkered with: the ball.

“I’m going to the softer golf ball,” said Bhatia, who typically plays a Callaway Chrome Tour X but plans to use a Chrome Tour at East Lake. “The greens are really firm this week. Softer for me, like, you want to win major championships, you need to hit it higher and softer. The golf ball I play is a lower-spinning ball, which is good, say, 16 weeks out of the year, but then you’ve got four majors, and then, obviously, some Signature Events play pretty firm. I’ve wanted to make this switch for a long time. I feel like there’s no better reason to do it than this week. I mean, it’s kind of a free-for-all, trying to get used to the golf ball and prep for the majors and some of the bigger events.”

Callaway released the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X in January. Both are four-piece balls that feature a large rubber core and a duel-mantle system encased in a soft urethane cover.

Is the Tour Championship a Presidents Cup audition for Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley?

Thomas: “I obviously really, really want to be on that team.”

One was the “bubble boy” for the BMW Championship. Another is in the same spot at this week’s 2024 Tour Championship.

This week at East Lake Golf Club, Keegan Bradley – 50th a week ago – and Justin Thomas – 30th this week – as well as Chris Kirk are hoping to show 2024 Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk they deserve a spot on the U.S. team that’s preparing to battle the International squad in September.

The first six players for the U.S. were announced Sunday night as the automatic qualifiers. The other six will be captain’s picks for the biennial competition Sept. 26-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Bradley made a jump of eight spots to No. 10 in the Presidents Cup standings after winning the 2024 BMW Championship last Sunday, doing so after arriving at Castle Pines Golf Club in the last position in the FedEx Cup standings.

The 2025 Ryder Cup captain said he’s been having conversations with Furyk about the Presidents Cup roster.

More: Keegan Bradley’s whirlwind summer is only ramping up — as are the Ryder Cup questions

“I’ve spoken to him a little bit. We’re going to chat a little more as the week goes on,” he said Wednesday. “I want to do what’s best for the team. I truly, truly mean that. If what’s best for the team is for me to play, then I want to play. If what’s best is for me to be the vice captain and there’s better pairings, then I’m happy to do that.”

Tour Championship: Thursday tee times | Picks to win | Staggered start

Justin Thomas was the last guy in the field this week. When he finished his round last Sunday in Colorado, he sounded like a golfer who figured he wouldn’t make the cut for East Lake but by the time he got home to Jupiter, Florida, he realized he had a spot in Atlanta.

Now he’s playing the wait-and-see game again. Does he feel like this is an audition week?

“I guess I would answer that, I don’t feel like I am for me, but if I was him, I would say I am, if that makes sense,” he said. “With how many people have an opportunity, I think it would be. … he’s definitely looking at guys that are potential picks and how they’re playing.”

“I’m definitely more at ease now than I was last year about getting picked, and it’s not from a lack of wanting to be on the team or feel like it’s not as important,” he continued. “Just my priorities are in a better place, that if I play the golf that I know I should it’ll take care of itself.

“I obviously really, really want to be on that team.”

Thomas dropped three spots to 19th after the BMW. Chris Kirk, who tied for ninth at the BMW, held steady in the 13th spot.

“I’d say it’s somewhat in the back of my mind,” Kirk said Wednesday. “That’s something that I would absolutely love to be a part of. I’m not going to lie to you about that. But I think that it’s pretty easy for me to just realize that that kind of stuff is so uncontrollable. All I can really do is just go and compete to the best of my ability and just see what happens. But yeah, I’m excited just to be here and have the opportunity.”

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala are the automatic qualifiers. The next six in the standings as of Aug. 28, 2024:

7. Sam Burns

8. Tony Finau

9. Russell Henley

10. Keegan Bradley

11. Brian Harman

12. Max Homa

Furyk will announce his six captain’s picks Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup Standings have made their way to Atlanta for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, where a $25 million paycheck awaits the champion — the total purse is $100 million.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler holds the top spot in the FEC Standings and will start the event at 10 under, two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele. Rounding out the top five, FedEx St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama will start at 7 under, BMW Championship winner Keegan Bradley will start at 6 under and Ludvig Aberg will start at 5 under.

Due to safety concerns, the PGA Tour adds internal out of bounds at East Lake for 2024 Tour Championship

“This decision was made primarily out of safety concerns.”

East Lake Golf Club received an extensive renovation over the last year and players in the field for this week’s 2024 Tour Championship have had to re-learn a golf course they’ve gotten used to playing a certain way.

Thanks to a few changes throughout the routing, players were considering hitting down other fairways to create better angles into greens.

For example, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said he was considering playing his tee shot on the par-5 18th down the 10th fairway to make the hole more manageable.

“It seems like a safer play to take all that out of play, hit it down 10,” Scheffler said. “The green is going to be pretty extraordinarily hard to hold anyways with it being a downslope and having a long club in there. It’s more you’re playing for birdies. There is less opportunity I think for eagle than there was before.”

Tour Championship: Thursday tee times | Picks to win | Staggered start

On Wednesday, the PGA Tour made sure that strategy was no longer possible.

“For the safety of spectators, players, caddies and everyone on property at East Lake Golf Club, the PGA Tour Rules Committee has established two internal boundaries for this week’s Tour Championship,” the Tour said in a statement. “The fairway on No. 7 is out of bounds during play of No. 6, and the fairway on No. 10 is out of bounds during play of No. 18.”

According to Chief Referee Gary Young, “This decision was made primarily out of safety concerns, specifically to prevent players from effectively putting people in harm’s way by taking an alternate route. When it sounds like that is going to be a possibility, it necessitates an internal boundary.”

The first round of the Tour Championship gets underway at 11:16 a.m. ET Thursday with Justin Thomas and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Scheffler will start at 10 under and two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele. The field of 30 is battling for a $25 million first-place prize.

Viktor Hovland calls his game this season ‘garbage,’ but he’s still got a chance to defend as FedEx Cup champion this week

Hovland called his lost season a learning experience.

ATLANTA – It wasn’t pretty but Viktor Hovland made it back to East Lake Golf Club to defend his title as FedEx Cup champion.

For much of the season, it was touch and go as Hovland, who won three times in 2023, including the last two FedEx Cup playoff events, struggled through his worst season as a pro.

“If last year was a nine out of 10, I’d probably say we’re still at a five out of 10. I know I can still shoot good numbers, but it just feels like it’s a little bit more hard work. It’s tougher for me to kind of string the good rounds together day by day,” he said on Tuesday at his pre-tournament press conference. “Last year I played well. I knew I played well. Every single day was a good day. Whereas now it just feels like a little bit more hard work. But at least I’m on the right track.”

Tour Championship: Thursday tee times | Picks to win

How low did the 26-year-old Norwegian’s game go this season? “It’s as bad as I’ve played in a long time, so we can call it a one,” he said.

But Hovland, who entered the playoffs at No. 57 in the season-long standings with just one top-10 finish to his credit, may have turned the corner, finishing T-2 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship to leap into the top 30 in the season-long standings and book his return to the Tour Championship.

“I feel like things are getting better every single week, so that’s nice to build on. Obviously I had a really nice week in Memphis and played OK last week. I just couldn’t get anything going with my putter,” he said. “I’d rather play bad if I putted poorly instead of hitting it all over Denver. I’m taking some good things into this week.”

Hovland called his lost season a learning experience and despite his game taking a step back as he played musical chairs with coaches and lost his dependable swing pattern amidst changes, he still managed to make his way back to East Lake and have a shot to defend his title.

“What’s really cool is that I’ve still made it to this week playing what I felt like is absolute garbage,” Hovland said. “I think that’s something that’s pretty cool to kind of have in my back pocket is that OK, we can struggle and we can still come out here and have a chance to win tournaments.”

Prize money, full field, starting strokes format for 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake

We look at the full field, the prize money and how the scoring works in Atlanta.

The 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs come to a close this week at the Tour Championship, where the winner will take home $25 million in bonus money.

That’s an increase of $7 million from a year ago. In 2019, the first year of the current format, the top prize was $15 million.

The money earned this week is considered bonus money and does not count towards a player’s winnings on the PGA Tour’s official money list.

This year marks the 18th season of the playoffs. PGA Tour players battled through 38 events to get to the finale. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup points made the 2024 postseason with the top 50 advancing to Week 2 and then just the top 30 reaching East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

Viktor Hovland won the Tour Championship in 2023.

How much money is at stake at the Tour Championship?

The winner of the Tour Championship is declared the FedEx Cup champion and takes home the first-place prize of $25 million in bonus money.

The runner-up gets $12.5 million, third place will earn $7.5 million, all the way down to 30th place, which is good for $550,000. The top 12 finishers will earn seven figures. Here’s a closer look:

Bonus money payouts

Position Payout Position Payout
1 $25,000,000 16 $795,000
2 $12,500,000 17 $775,000

There is $100 million in bonus money from the entire FedEx Cup Playoffs in 2024.

The format

The PGA Tour will continue to utilize the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, which was introduced for the first time in 2019. It’s a staggered system whereby the golfer in the top position will start the Tour Championship at 10 under.

Only two multiple winners

The first 17 seasons of the playoff produced 14 different winners.

Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) and Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) are the only golfers to have won it more than once.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are the only golfers to win the FedEx Cup more than once.

CASTLE ROCK,  Colo. — It’s the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and there are now just 30 golfers alive in the PGA Tour’s 2024 season.

The were 70 Tour pros who made the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis to kick off the postseason, then 50 at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.

The Tour Championship puts a cap on the season and the winner of the event is also declared the FedEx Cup champion.

The first 17 seasons of the playoff produced 14 different winners with Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) and Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) the only golfers to win it more than once.

There were four who played their way in, which meant there were four who dropped out. The biggest riser was the 2024 BMW winner, Keegan Bradley. The top three spots remained unchanged from a week ago. The Tour Championship format uses a “staggered start.”

Paige Spiranac, Good Good members in field for ‘Creator Classic’ at Tour Championship

The event will be open to anyone with a Wednesday ticket to the Tour Championship.

The PGA Tour is stepping into the YouTube golf world for the first time.

Some of the most popular golf creators from around the world will face off in The Creator Classic, a nine-hole competition at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta before the Tour Championship. The tournament will be broadcast on the PGA Tour YouTube channel and several other platforms. The event will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. ET at East Lake before play begins the next day.

Sixteen of the most successful and skilled golf creators will take on the newly restored East Lake Golf Club — facing the same conditions as the pros — each competing for the inaugural Creator Classic title. Among the participants are Paige Spiranac, Tyler Toney from Dude Perfect, the Bryan Bros, Fat Perez from Bob Does Sports and Good Good creators Garrett Clark, Brad Dalke and Sean Walsh.

The tournament will consist of eight holes of gross stroke play, then a playoff between the top four finishers. Foursomes will be announced the day before the event.

The Creator Classic marks the first look at the new back nine at East Lake, making these creators the first to officially take on the restored course. The club underwent a dramatic full-scale restoration following the 2023 Tour Championship to return the course to its golden age and harken back to elements from the original Donald Ross layout, as well as reflect the changes in the modern game.

The Creator Classic, which will feature ShotLink, Trackman shot tracing and on-screen graphics, will be streamed live via the PGA Tour’s YouTube channel as well as Peacock and ESPN+.

Now a Ryder Cup team member, Brian Harman details past disappointing calls from national team captains

“I’ve never not gotten picked and felt like I truly deserved a spot,” said Harman of his past close calls.

[anyclip pubname=”2122″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8224″]

Zach Johnson had six happy phone calls when he made his captain’s picks for the U.S. Ryder Cup squad.

He had to make a handful of disappointing calls, as well, as the 12-player team bound for Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome is set.

In the past, Brian Harman has been on the receiving end of the disappointing calls, but not this year. The 36-year-old played his way on the team as an automatic qualifier for the Americans thanks to a T-5 finish at last week’s BMW Championship. A two-time member of Team USA at both the Walker Cup (2005, 2009) and Palmer Cup (2006, 2007) as an amateur, Harman will make his professional national team debut with the added perspective of a player who has been left behind in the past.

On the season, Harman has earned 11 top-25 and six top-10 finishes on Tour, including three runner-up showings in addition to his win at the Open Championship. Performances like that keep you in the mix for a pick, but Harman knows better than anyone what it means to be on the negative end of that conversation.

“Let’s see. Jim Furyk called me and told me I wasn’t on the (2018 Ryder Cup) team. Him and I had a really nice conversation,” said Harman. “Because when he called and told me I wasn’t, I’m like, ‘Well, I know, I have not performed as well as I should have in an attempt to make this team. I understand.’ I wouldn’t have picked me either.”

“And then Steve Stricker called and told me I wasn’t making the (2017) Presidents Cup team,” he continued. “I thought I had a better shot at getting picked for that one. But Steve’s always been a dear friend of mine and I understood.”

“I never, I’ve never not gotten picked and felt like I truly deserved a spot.”

Harman did say that Davis Love III gave him a call last year about the Presidents Cup, a team that Harman desperately wanted to be on.

“But, once again, I hadn’t, I finished third in Memphis last year, I was 70th on the FedEx Cup and ended up I was playing really well at the end of the year,” he said, “but I hadn’t done anything to warrant a flier pick.”

Many players would hold grudges against captains and make excuses as to why they weren’t chosen. Instead, Harman used it as motivation and made it so he couldn’t be left off this year. Talk about the kind of player you want on a team.
