ONE Championship: Winter Warriors results – Stamp Fairtex submits Ritu Phogat to win atomweight grand prix

Stamp Fairtex put a stamp – pun intended – on her run through ONE Championship’s atomweight grand prix.

[autotag]Stamp Fairtex[/autotag] put a stamp – pun intended – on her run through ONE Championship’s atomweight grand prix.

Fairtex (8-1) submitted [autotag]Ritu Phogat[/autotag] (7-2) with a second-round armbar in the tournament final at ONE Championship: Winter Warriors. Fairtex had to work through early aggression from Phogat, but eventually found herself in position to get the tap and the win after back-to-back decisions in the grand prix’s opening round and semifinals.

Phogat tried to get the fight to the canvas early, but Fairtex, a former ONE muay Thai and kickboxing champion, used her kicking game to defend. And in the middle frame, Stamp locked up a triangle choke after a Phogat takedown, then transitioned to an armbar to get the tap at the 2:14 mark of the round and the grand prix title.

Also on the card, [autotag]Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev[/autotag] went to proverbial war with [autotag]Timofey Nastyukhin[/autotag] and ultimately shut him down in the third round. After a back-and-forth opening round, Arslanaliev had Nastyukhin on the ropes in the middle frame. Nastyukhin survived to see the third, but it didn’t take Arslanaliev long into the last round to land a big right for the finish just 49 seconds into the round.

ONE on TNT II results: Champ Christian Lee stuns Timofey Nastyukhin with first-round TKO

While challenger Timofey Nastyukhin promised a first-round finish, it was Christian Lee who delivered that result at ONE on TNT II.

While challenger [autotag]Timofey Nastyukhin[/autotag] (14-5) promised a first-round finish, it was [autotag]Christian Lee[/autotag] (15-3) who delivered that result at ONE on TNT II.

The 22-year-old Lee retained his lightweight title with the impressive victory, which took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium and aired Wednesday on TNT.

Lee was cautious in the face of the aggressive Nastyukhin early staying on the outside and moving well. But as the challenger leaped forward to strike, Lee clipped him with a clean counter left that sent Nastyukhin to the canvas.

Lee pulled back on a takedown that was coming after the clean left and instead started to rattle off right hands. Some 15 shots followed, and as Nastyukhin tried to tripod and stand, they continued to land clean, opening up a cut near the challenger’s right eye. Lee didn’t show any signs of slowing down, and the referee called off the fight just 73 seconds after it began.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better story, really,” Lee said before dedicating the fight to his pregnant wife. “This was the most important fight of my life.”

For his part, Nastyukhin protested the result, but it was difficult to paint his attempted recovery as intelligent defense in the face of relentless punches. The result served as Lee’s second successful title defense.

“Speed and accuracy beats power, and that’s what happened tonight,” Lee said.

Christian Lee: I’ll ‘exploit a weakness’ vs. Timofey Nastyukhin, finish him to retain ONE title

A confident Christian Lee is expecting a short night against Timofey Nastyukhin at ONE on TNT II.

[autotag]Christian Lee[/autotag] is expecting a short night against [autotag]Timofey Nastyukhin[/autotag] at ONE on TNT II.

Lee (14-3) defends his ONE Championship lightweight title against Nastyukhin on Wednesday at Singapore Indoor Stadium. The main card airs on TNT following prelims on B/R Live.

Having only gone the distance once in his career, Lee will be in search of his second title defense when he meets fellow finisher Nastyukhin (14-4), who picked up a first-round TKO over former UFC lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez in the ONE grand prix quarterfinal.

But Lee is confident that he’ll have the edge wherever the fight goes.

“Timofey and I, we are similar in a sense that we both go for the finish,” Lee said. “However, I feel that my skills are much greater in every area, so what I’m going to do is mix it up, play through the full range of mixed martial arts, and I feel that my game will match up with his, and I’ll be able to exploit a weakness.”

He continued, “I’m very confident to defend my work title. I train every day, and I push myself so extremely hard. I know I’m the best fighter in the world.”

A 22-year-old soon-to-be-father, Lee is not only anticipating a finish over Nastyukhin, but he expects to make quick work of him.

“I think the fight is going to start very quickly,” Lee said. “There’s going to be a lot of action early on, and I’m going to end the fight in the first round with a finish.”

Video: ONE Championship’s Top 10 Knockouts of the Year: Part 3 – Relive Joshua Pacio’s show-stealing finish

Recap the best knockout finishes from Asian MMA promotion ONE Championship in their end-of-year countdown.

It’s been a spectacular year for Singapore-based promotion ONE Championship. With big-name signings and a packed schedule of events encompassing MMA, kickboxing and Muay Thai, 2019 has been the biggest year in ONE Championship history.

The promotion has served up more than its fair share of spectacular finishes over the course of the year, as the stars of Asian MMA have delivered a plethora of eye-catching knockouts to wow the fans across the region.

****

In Part 3 of ONE’s official countdown of their Top 10 knockouts of the year, we round out the list with the top three knockout finishes from the Asian promotion.

The KO that resonated the most with the U.S. MMA audience was undoubtedly [autotag]Timofey Nastyukhin[/autotag]’s first-round demolition of former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at “ONE: A New Era” in Tokyo, Japan. The Russian lightweight had a well-earned reputation as a devastating first-round finisher, but his resumé nonetheless flew under the radar of many fans heading into his bout with the debuting Alvarez on Mar. 31.

But those fans who weren’t aware of Nastyukhin’s nasty KO power were certainly aware of it by the end of the contest, as the power-punching Russian dismantled Alvarez inside a round to claim a huge victory and eliminate the American from the ONE lightweight grand prix at the quarterfinal stage.

If Nastyukhin’s stoppage of Alvarez was a heavy-handed beatdown, the No. 2 KO on the list was a one-shot special from one of the organization’s best athletes.

Australia’s [autotag]Martin Nguyen[/autotag] became ONE’s first “champ champ” in 2018, but after relinquishing the lightweight belt later that same year due to injury, “The Situ-Asian” headed into 2019 focused on defending his featherweight title. And he successfully held on to his belt throughout the year with a pair of stoppage victories, with his April finish of former featherweight champion Narantungalag Jadambaa at “ONE: Roots of Honor” featuring at No. 2 on the list.

Nguyen systematically broke down Jadambaa with his slick striking and deft footwork as he picked apart the Mongolian. Then, after hurting the former champion with a well-placed low calf kick, Nguyen saw his moment and launched into a spectacular flying knee that sent his man crashing to the canvas.

But Nguyen’s finish wasn’t quite enough to earn the top spot on the list, as Filipino strawweight star [autotag]Joshua Pacio[/autotag] claimed the Knockout of the Year award with his fourth-round roundhouse knee finish of ONE strawweight champ Yosuke Saruta at “ONE: Roots of Honor” in Manila.

“The Passion” had captured the strawweight title in September 2018, but lost the belt to Saruta after a razor-thin split-decision verdict went the Japanese fighter’s way at “ONE: Eternal Glory” in January. A rematch was booked for April, and a packed Mall of Asia Arena crowd roared their support for Pacio as he battled into the championship round with Saruta once again.

But, just as people began to wonder how the fight might be scored, Pacio ended all doubt about the outcome as he connected with a roundhouse knee, which landed flush on Saruta’s temple, sending the defending champion face-first into the canvas.

It was a stunning KO as Pacio registered the best ONE Championship knockout of the year and reclaimed the ONE strawweight title amid wild scenes in Manila.
