No doubting: Thomas Amankwaa has impressed Rutgers football safeties coach Drew Lascari

Thomas Amankwaa is back on defense and thriving according to safeties coach Drew Lascari.

Thomas Amankwaa is making some strides this spring as he settles in on the offensive side of the ball. After spending last season as a true freshman playing wide receiver, Amankwaa is now a safety.

It is a position that safeties coach Drew Lascari said is well-suited for the player.

A redshirt last season, Amankwaa’s transition back to the defensive side of the ball isn’t necessarily a steep one. He played as a cornerback at Hillsborough High School (Hillsborough, N.J.), where he was a three-star recruit and a top 10 player in New Jersey according to 247Sports.

Lascari said that he is encouraged by Amankwaa’s transition back to the defensive side of the ball and his unit.

“One, he can run and he’s not afraid to be physical. He knows how to use his hands well. He has a really good sense of zone coverages as well as man preparations,” Lascari told reporters on Thursday.

“He works really hard in terms of his preparation and his studies. I’m really, really proud of Thomas and how he is developing. Looking forward to seeing where he will go.”

The Rutgers secondary lost a couple of starters this offseason, including safety Christian Izien. Amankwaa could well project into a prominent role in the two-deep.

This offseason his older brother, Charles Amankwaa, committed to Rutgers out of the transfer portal.

Injured throughout last season, Amankwaa showed some serious flashes for Akron in 2021. That year, he had 44 total tackles, a sack, three interceptions, 12 passes defended and a forced fumble.

Thomas Amankwaa produced a senior season at Hillsborough that certainly shows a lot of potential and promise. The Rutgers football commit, who likely plays defensive back at the next level, is one of the most exciting playmakers in New Jersey high school football with the ball in his hand.

His final game at Hillsborough was in a state sectional championship, a 28-7 win over Kingsway. In the game, Amankwaa produced a touchdown catch reminiscent of Randy Moss. On Wednesday, he was named to the USA TODAY NETWORK 2021 All-New Jersey football offensive first team.

He played wide receiver, running back, returned kicks and was a standout defensive back for the program. At Rutgers, he projects as a cornerback.

Lightly recruited, the three-star Amankwaa’s only other ‘Power Five’ offers were Syracuse and Pittsburgh. He is more athletic and impactful than several of the state’s more heralded four-star recruits.

The athlete shows a lot of speed and strength in his senior highlights. He clearly has a nose for the ball, something that is seen with his play on either side of the ball.

There are shades of Mohamed Sanu to his game. He will be a Rutgers fan favorite when he arrives ‘on the banks’ – if only because his celebration in this weekend’s state championship game is the program’s ‘CHOP’ hand motion.

Time, perhaps, to rethink Thomas Amankwaa’s position at the next level?

Amankwaa, a Rutgers football commit, pulled off a ‘Randy Moss’ catch on Saturday in Hillsborough’s state title win. The move is known as getting ‘Mossed’ – a play on the Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver’s ability to rise above a defensive back and snatch the ball at a high point.

A defensive back recruit for Rutgers, Amankwaa also plays a variety of positions on offense. He is a highly effective wide receiver given his leaping ability and solid route running. He held several offers when he committed to Rutgers this fall including from Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

Amankwaa has the potential to be an All-Big Ten level cornerback in college, but he also looks like he could be a very solid wide receiver for Rutgers as well.

The future Rutgers wide receiver celebrated with a ‘CHOP’ after running into the endzone for a touchdown.

Hillsborough beat Kingsway 28-7 to claim the CentralGroup 5 Championship in New Jersey. Following the game, Amankwaa was embraced by Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano on the very same field he will be playing on next fall.

Rutgers football has been looking to add a cornerback to a recruiting class that is already one of the best in the Big Ten. They got one on Monday morning in Thomas Amankwaa.

The Hillsborough defensive back received an offer from head coach Greg Schiano on Saturday before the Scarlet Knights beat Delaware 45-13. He committed just two days later via a post on social media.

The senior cornerback measures in at 6-foot and 195 pounds. He held offers from Pittsburgh and Syracuse as well as Kent State, UMass, Old Dominion and Western Michigan among others.

He is fast and boasts a good wingspan. Amankwaa also plays as a wide receiver for Hillsborough.

Amankwaa is the first cornerback to commit to the Scarlet Knights this year. Rutgers has a 2022 class ranked No. 31 in the nation according to Rivals.com and boasts 15 committed players. With an average star ranking of 3.4, the class is No. 19 in the nation. Seven players in the class are from New Jersey.

The class now has two defensive backs with safety Davison Igbinosun committing to the program in July.
