Texas Tech vs. Houston odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Houston Cougars odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders meet the Houston Cougars in their season openers at NRG Stadium in Houston for a cross-conference battle. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Texas Tech vs. Houston odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Both Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells and Houston’s head coach Dana Holgorsen enter their third season with neither having an above-.500 year thus far. The Red Raiders finished 4-6 in 2020 while the Cougars were 3-5.

The Red Raiders have 17 starters returning: Eight on offense and nine on offense. The Cougars also bring back the same number of starters on each side of the ball. ESPN’s college football guru, Bill Connelly, ranks Texas Tech and Houston neck-and-neck in returning production for 2021 (69-70th).

Texas Tech at Houston odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas Tech 34, Houston 28

Money line

GIMME TEXAS TECH (+100) for 1 unit because they are more experienced—the Red Raiders have a Big 12-high 12 super seniors—and junior transfer, former-Oregon QB Tyler Shough, gives Texas Tech an edge in the quarterback matchup.

These two squads rank near each other in Football Outsiders’ F+ ratings overall and on both sides of the ball. Houston and Texas Tech have nearly the same returning production and an equal amount of returning starters.

Also, I think the market’s assumption is that Houston junior QB Clayton Tune and this offense takes a step forward in Holgorsen’s third season on the job.

However, Wells has a slightly better record in his three seasons at Texas Tech as Holgorsen in Houston. Furthermore, the Red Raiders had a plus-differential in yards per play against tougher competition than the Cougars, who had a negative net yards per play.

Moreover, Shough is a four-star recruit who passed for 1,559 yards last season with a 13 touchdown-to-6-interception ratio and led Oregon in rushing attempts. Shough will have a lot of support at his new home in Lubbock, Texas and should pick up where he left off in Oregon.

BET TEXAS TECH (+100).

Against the spread

The spread and the money line are identical for Texas Tech-Houston so PASS and STICK WITH THE MONEY LINE.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the UNDER 64.5 (-108) for a half unit only because the Texas Tech-Houston total opened at 69.5 before it was steamed down to the current numbers. The reason for the line movement was because oddsmakers sided with the “sharp” money, which is backing the Under at a nearly 80% clip (according to Pregame.com).

But, the best part of that line movement is that it’s going in the opposite direction of a public that’s betting the Over at roughly a 60% rate. It’s a bit of a sweet spot in sports betting when you’re on the same side as the “wiseguys” and fading the public.

The model prefers the Razorbacks to win, disagreeing with BetMGM’s money line favorite.

March Madness: Arkansas vs. Texas Tech odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Arkansas vs. Texas Tech odds and lines, with March Madness Round 2 picks and predictions.

The Arkansas Razorbacks (23-6) take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (18-10) in a South Region Second Round game Sunday. The third-seeded Razorbacks and sixth-seeded Raiders will tip-off at 6:10 p.m. ET at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Below, we analyze the Arkansas-Texas Tech odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Arkansas brushed away Colgate 85-68 in its First Round contest. The Razorbacks enter Sunday’s tilt having won 10 of their last 11 games. Arkansas sports a fast-tempo style and a tremendous set of per-possession defensive stats.

Texas Tech also plays excellent defense (Big 12-leading 63.0 points per game allowed), but the Red Raiders play at a much slower tempo. TTU went to a regional final in 2018 and the national championship in 2019. The Raiders defeated Utah State 65-53 in their Friday tourney opener.

Arkansas vs. Texas Tech: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Arkansas 71, Texas Tech 66

Money line (ML)

Both sides defend well and both can block shots. TTU is especially effective in shutting down the transition game. Arkansas can better defend the area in and around the paint. There are some style clashes, however, that make for some leverage on the Razorbacks’ side of the ledger.

Texas Tech hasn’t found much success against other fives that deliver big-time defensive production. Against top Big-12 defensive teams Kansas, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Baylor (and throw in solid non-conference foe in Abilene Christian), the Raiders are a combined 1-7 ATS.

Sunday’s game is also a fast (UA)-vs.-slow (TTU) clash. Against the three fastest teams in the Big 12, the Raiders are 2-4 ATS. Against the four slowest SEC squads (plus methodical North Texas in the non-SEC slate), the Razorbacks are 4-1 ATS.

TAKE ARKANSAS (+105).

Play our new, free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on paying for the point-and-a-half with an ATS play. The UA money-line play is solid.

Over/Under (O/U)

Tournament Arkansas is a 3-0 proposition on the Under. And the Under is 6-2 in the Razorbacks’ last eight games. The tag here is a far cry lower than what UA usually gets, but the UNDER 140.5 (-110) is s small-to-moderate lean.

Texas Tech at Baylor odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Texas Tech Red Raiders at Baylor Bears odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (17-8 overall, 9-7 Big 12) tussle with the Baylor Bears (20-1, 12-1) in a Sunday matinee at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. Tip-off will be at 4 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Texas Tech-Baylor odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Baylor is No. 3 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Texas Tech is 18th.

Texas Tech at Baylor: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Texas Tech +310 (bet $100 to win $310) | Baylor -400 (bet $400 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Texas Tech +8.5 (-120) | Baylor -8.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 137.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Texas Tech at Baylor: Three things to know

  1. Baylor is coming off an 81-70 home win over Oklahoma State Thursday. The Bears committed 13 turnovers while forcing 18, marking the eighth straight game BU has won the turnover margin. Over those eight contests, the Bears have committed 10.4 turnovers per game while forcing 16.1.
  2. Texas Tech lost to Baylor 68-60 Jan. 16. The Raiders have shot 36.3% from 3-point range since that game but went just 6-for-24 against the Bears. Since playing Baylor, TTU has had two three-game win streaks (including a current one) and one three-game losing skid.
  3. The 3-point arc is very much a line of demarcation between the style in these two offenses. Baylor ranks first in the Big 12 with 24.7 triple attempts per contest. TTU ranks last in the circuit, attempting just 18.0 3-pointers per game. The frequency makes sense for both; the Bears are shooting 42.0% from distance; the Raiders are shooting 34.0%.

Money line (ML)

STEER CLEAR. Baylor -350 brings a sliver of value, but current prices are out of range.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Red Raiders are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games against teams playing better than .600 basketball, and they’re 1-4 ATS over their last five road games.

Texas Tech makes its hay against lesser defensive units than the one it will see Sunday afternoon. Baylor’s ability to create turnovers and then get out and score in transition and from distance is a problem for TTU.

The Raiders aren’t an above-average defense on the perimeter. BU went just 6-for-24 from 3-point-land in the first meeting. An average shooting game (for a dialed-in Bears offense) spells a double-digit win for the home five.

BACK BAYLOR -8.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

This match-up hit the Under in the January game. The Over is 8-1 in nine BU games since. The Under is the lean but only at a tag closer to 140.

PASS.

Iowa State at Texas Tech odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Iowa State at Texas Tech odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Iowa State Cyclones (2-19 overall, 0-16 Big 12) take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-8, 8-7) in a Thursday evening (7 p.m. ET) clash at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Below, we analyze the Iowa State-Texas Tech odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Texas Tech is No. 18 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa State at Texas Tech: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Iowa State +1150 (bet $100 to win $1,150) | Texas Tech -3000 (bet $3,000 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa State +16.5 (-110) | Texas Tech -16.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 136.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa State at Texas Tech: Three things to know

  1. Iowa State lost, 81-67, against Texas Tuesday night. The Cyclones were outscored, 20-7, on foul shots. ISU has averaged just 7.0 free-throw attempts over its last four games. For the season, the Cyclones are averaging just 11.6 FTA per contest (246th NCAA-I).
  2. The Red Raiders are coming off  back-to-back wins after enduring a three-game losing streak. Texas Tech beat Texas Saturday and TCU on Tuesday. The Raiders allowed a combined 118 points over their two recent wins; that lowered their season points-per-game-allowed average to 62.6. That mark ranks 20th in the nation.
  3. TTU shot a season-high 58.9% from the floor in a 91-64 victory at Iowa State Jan. 9. The 27-point victory marks the Raiders’ largest margin in a Big 12 game this season.

No. Just … no.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Red Raiders are much the better team at both ends of the floor, but in a game that may not reach the mid-130s, a 16-1/2-point tag is a big ask. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

Junior G Rasir Bolton is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Bolton is the Cyclones’ leading scorer (15.4 points per game) and assist man (3.9 per game). ISU’s defense has been improving during the season; TTU’s had been on the decline, but recent games have righted the ship at that end of the floor. And analytics fully back the Raiders’ placement in the points-per-game-allowed department.

TAKE THE UNDER 136.5 (-110).

TCU at Texas Tech odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s TCU at Texas Tech odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The TCU Horned Frogs (12-10 overall, 5-8 Big 12) tangle with the Texas Tech Red Raiders (15-8, 7-7) in a Tuesday evening (7 p.m. ET) contest at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Below, we analyze the TCU-Texas Tech odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Texas Tech is No. 18 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

TCU at Texas Tech: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: TCU +600 (bet $100 to win $600) | Texas Tech -900 (bet $900 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: TCU +12.5 (-115) | Texas Tech -12.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 131.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

TCU at Texas Tech: Three things to know

  1. Texas Christian defeated Iowa State, 76-72, Saturday to bring an end to a three-game skid. The Horned Frogs were 8-for-19 (42.1%) from distance and 18-for-18 from the foul line in their win over the Cyclones. TCU was also a plus-4 on the boards and a plus-3 in the turnover exchange. The latter was unusual for a TCU team which has now had few turnovers than its opponent just twice since the first of the year.
  2. The Red Raiders are coming off a 68-59 win over Texas Saturday. The win over the Longhorns — TTU’s second this season — put an end to a three-game losing streak. In allowing just 59 points against UT, Texas Tech lowered its season points-per-game-allowed average to 63.2. That mark ranks 26th in the nation.
  3. One key in this one figures to be TCU’s performance at the free-throw line. The Frogs get to the line at a high rate; TTU sends foes to the line at high rate. But TCU hasn’t always cashed in at an acceptable level: the Horned Frogs are shooting 67.5% on their uncontested 15-footers. That ranks 275th in the nation. But TCU went 18-for-18 in its last game and is shooting a plenty-good 77.9% over its last seven games.

Texas Tech at Oklahoma State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Texas Tech Red Raiders at Oklahoma State Cowboys odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (14-7 overall, 6-6 Big 12) travel to meet the Oklahoma State Cowboys (14-6, 7-6) Monday at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. Tip-off for this conference showdown between Top 25 teams is set for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Red Raiders were No. 11 and the Cowboys No. 22 in last week’s Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The new poll will be released Monday afternoon.

Texas Tech at Oklahoma State: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:10 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Texas Tech -160 (bet $160 to win $100) | Oklahoma State +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Texas Tech -3.5 (-105) | Oklahoma State +3.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 138.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Texas Tech at Oklahoma State: Three things to know

  1. The Red Raiders picked a bad time for a slide. They have dropped two in a row and four of the past seven outings. Texas Tech was dumped 67-61 at Kansas Saturday, failing to cover as a 2-point underdog with the Under (134.5) cashing. Texas Tech is 3-13 ATS across the past 16 games.
  2. The Cowboys also have a loss to Kansas across their past four outings, but they’re 3-1 straight-up and 2-2 ATS during the span. They’re coming off an impressive 76-58 win against Iowa State Tuesday as 11-point favorites. OSU is a slight underdog in this game, and it is 3-4 SU/4-3 ATS across seven outings as an underdog this season.
  3. Texas Tech fell to Oklahoma State 82-77 in Lubbock, Texas, Jan. 2, 82-77 in overtime. The Cowboys won outright as 8.5-point underdogs as the Over (134.5) cashed. The underdog has cashed in nine of the previous 12 meetings in the head-to-head series.

Texas Tech at Oklahoma State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Oklahoma State 73, Texas Tech 70

Money line (ML)

OKLAHOMA STATE (+135) is a home underdog, but it’s playing slightly better basketball than Texas Tech at the moment. The Red Raiders have been dumped by Kansas and West Virginia in the past two games, and as mentioned, they were beaten by the Cowboys in Lubbock back on Jan. 2.

A key thing to watch is the health of Oklahoma State G Isaac Likekele (foot), who is questionable for this game. He missed the last two games, but is expected to return for this one. He is OSU’s second-leading scorer with 10.2 points per game, while leading the team with 7.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per outing. As long as Likekele can play, look for the Cowboys to defend Gallagher-Iba with another signature win over the Red Raiders. If he is ruled out, then Texas Tech is a lot more attractive straight-up.

Against the spread (ATS)

OKLAHOMA STATE +3.5 (-115) is the play here, again, as long as Likekele is given the green light to play.

The Cowboys are a better value just playing the money line in this particular instance, however. While the Cowboys are 2-7 ATS across their past nine home games against a team with a winning road record, the underdog is 9-3 ATS across the past 12 meetings in this head-to-head series.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 138.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this Big 12 battle. The Over is 8-3-2 in Oklahoma State’s past 13 at home, and 10-4 in its past 14 overall. For Texas Tech, the Over is 8-3 in the past 11 overall, and 4-1 in the past five on the road.

Likekele’s playing status doesn’t affect the total as much. If he plays, good, as he is a top scorer for the Cowboys. If he doesn’t play, it’s also good as he is a better-than-average defender. If he’s out, the Red Raiders should see more offensive opportunities.

West Virginia at Texas Tech: Three things to know

  1. The Mountaineers have won four of their last five games, and that stretch includes an 88-87 home win over Texas Tech Jan. 25. WVU won that game despite forcing just two Red Raiders turnovers. The Mountaineers went 12-for-19 (63.2%) from 3-point range as part of a 57.7% overall shooting performance.
  2. The Raiders have won three straight since losing in Morgantown, W. Va. G Mac McClung scored 23 points in the most recent of those three wins. McClung tallied 30 against WVU and is averaging 17.2 points per game for the season.
  3. TTU G Terrence Shannon Jr. is listed as questionable with a leg injury. Shannon is the Raiders’ second-leading scorer at 13.0 PPG. The 6-foot-6 sophomore logged over 29 minutes per game in the five contests preceding Saturday when he played just 11 minutes in a road win at Kansas State.

West Virginia at Texas Tech: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas Tech 70, West Virginia 66

Money line (ML)

PASS. A West Virginia price in the +220-range would be attractive, but it would come after an unlikely swing.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Mountaineers have come together defensively after a sketchy start. And WVU has been improved from distance of late. The latter figures to be a monster key to this game.

The Red Raiders are 0-7 ATS in their last seven games as a home favorite.

The discounted 5.5-point tag is about the minimum for this lean, but it’s a WEST VIRGINIA +5.5 (-110) LEAN. Following the price throughout the day is suggested.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected total for meeting No. 1 was 136.0. Texas Tech’s pace numbers have been trending downward.

TAKE THE UNDER 140.5 (-110), but consider waiting out a higher total as the game approaches.

Oklahoma at Texas Tech odds, picks and prediction

The Oklahoma Sooners (11-4, 6-3 Big 12) visit the Texas Tech Red Raiders (12-5, 4-4) Monday for a 9 p.m. ET tip. Below, we analyze the Oklahoma-Texas Tech college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Red Raiders were No. 10 in last week’s Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The new poll will be released Monday and should include the Sooners, who have beat three top-10 teams in a row.

Oklahoma at Texas Tech: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:35 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oklahoma +240 (bet $100 to win $240) | Texas Tech -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Oklahoma +6.5 (-110) | Texas Tech -6.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 138.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Oklahoma at Texas Tech: Three things to know

  1. Despite missing leading scorer Austin Reaves and fellow senior G Alondes Williams, Oklahoma upset No. 8 Alabama as a 3.5-point home underdog 66-61 Saturday. Reaves and Williams were unavailable due to COVID-19 protocols and will also be out for this Texas Tech tilt. Oklahoma trailed Alabama 60-59 with 3:24 to go before sophomore F Jalen Hill sank 4 free throws and junior G Elijah Harkless hit a jumper with 20 seconds left and a free throw with 13 seconds remaining to seal it.
  2. Texas Tech snapped a 2-game skid with a 76-71 comeback victory at LSU Saturday in their SEC/Big 12 challenge matchup. The Red Raiders trailed 71-64 with 1:14 remaining before scoring the final 12 points to pick up the win and cover as 3.5-point favorites. Junior G Mac McClung (22 points) hit back-to-back 3-pointers and sophomore G Terrence Shannon Jr. (23 points) hit a go-ahead layup at the 29-second mark and added 4 free throws in the final 16 seconds. McClung averages a team-best 17.5 PPG.
  3. Texas Tech won the season’s first meeting 69-67 in late December, handing Oklahoma its only home loss of the season. The Red Raiders led the entire second half but never by more than 7 points. The Sooners trailed by 2 points several times in the final 20 minutes with a chance to tie or win at the buzzer. The rivals split their two games the previous season with the home team prevailing each time.

Oklahoma at Texas Tech: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas Tech 72, Oklahoma 63

Money line (ML)

I have Texas Tech winning, but the -300 price is too chalky. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

TEXAS TECH -6.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. All the hype is on Oklahoma. The Sooners own a 5-game win streak, including three in a row vs. top-10 teams: At home vs. then-No. 9 Kansas Jan. 23, at No. 5 Texas 80-79 Tuesday and Alabama Saturday.

The Sooners beat the Crimson Tide without Reaves but they were at home. Look for an Oklahoma letdown here despite being the much better ATS team this season.

ATS: Oklahoma 10-5 | Texas Tech 7-10

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 138.5 (-110). The Under has cashed in the last five in this series. The Red Raiders are really good defensively. They allow only 62.2 PPG to rank 21st in the country, and they’re 13th in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom.com.

Plus, the Sooners will be without Reaves’ team-best 15.8 PPG.

O/U records: Oklahoma 6-9 | Texas Tech 8-9
